After hovering near death for several days last week, Robert woke up (to everyone's surprise) last Thursday morning, signaled he wanted the tubes removed from his throat and then insisted on calling me. When the phone rang, my heart fell, but when I heard his voice, I wept with relief. He's making slow but steady progress. He stood up for the first time yesterday, and took a walk around the ward this morning before I got there. His lungs have a way to go, but we got our first good kidney news this morning -- they've finally started to budge (they'd been in shutdown for over a week). He's off oxygen almost all the time now, he's coherent almost all the time, and he's got his short-term memory back, and well, barring any unexpected emergencies, he'll eventually be coming home. Hard to believe, given where he was a week ago, but he's a stubborn as I am, and I pulled out of a similar tailspin nine years ago. And now: A very sincere thank you for the support, prayer, positive thoughts, cheerleading and all other forms of help we've received this week. A very special merci to Lisa Lee, who drove all the way from Sacramento to help me do 40,000 lbs of laundry, and then continued cleaning house after we got home and I collapsed on the bed. Yay, Lisa! I'll write more when I can. hugs all around, walt - -- Let the walls go tumbling down Falling on the ground And all the dogs go running free The wild and gentle dogs Kenneled in me ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Oct 2005 18:23:37 -0400 (EDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: New Desktop Pic - --- Mark-Leon Thorne wrote: > Thank you all so much for your wonderful compliments > on my first > desktop picture. Fodder for my writing/story telling. We are a very specialised bookstore, and take great pride in the wonderful selection of books and music. Not the regular bookstand kind of place at all... People, like stamps of many countries, come in droves to see us, and sometimes, when the time is just right, just so, they lean on the counter and spin a tale or two. I've met leaders of countries, famous and not so famous authors; musicians, all in all, the most wonderful people from all round the globe. When I have the opportunity , I put on my wannabejournalist hat and do an impromptu interview...listening, really listening is the key. often a fine balance, as not everyone wants to talk. sometimes i get lucky, many times, in fact. yesterday's "in" was around a winnipeg folk festival mug ... which led to my litmus test ... "and what do you think about joni mitchell's music"....common threads. like seasons, spin round and round the room...as it turns out, this fellow is a university of manitoba professor who saw a certain Joni Anderson at the Sing Out show here in Winnipeg in 1965. (!!)Seems Mr. Chapin and his sons were there too. Me, well, as you can imagine...awestruck, mesmerized. Slow smile like sweet honey spreads across my face, prairie skye sunshine golden. A fantastic story...I'm writing it all down in my mind so that I can rush home to the computer, share it with you, now. Uh oh. Road block. How can i possibly relay the details of how that 'felt'. I imagine, as you are reading this, your own stories and images come to mind, your "first time i saw joni" stories. just like now, in this moment of sharing energy on this screen, my story becomes yours. Tangled up in shades of Blue. in those *gasp* there's Joni moments...there really is no way to articulate that magic, the gushing with pride, the tears welling up from the inside/out. damn, she's touched so many of us, brought us all rushing in, like fools, or not, to the centre of where we are, now. If I were going to die, and if I were going to be buried somewhere, I would want an ironic headstone. In fact, it could be made of iron (and ultimately it would rust, but that just adds to the irony.)
