I'd have to say Travelogue. The magic moment begins with the 'where is hope?' line. Although that's more the elegance of imparting emotional color, a skill she was just developing as a chanteuse. To paraphrase Herbie Hancock, "Where did you get that new VOICE?!" But the sonic beauty is clear to me with Trouble Child. Her voice is full of so much warmth. Breathing with delicious ease and jazzy flow. It's like listening to wine. And she carries it on into Boogie man... "Ah, the new music that might have been." If she'd gone on, the next project would have her best voice. I always love what she did last, most. (Well, maybe not during the 80's... but you get my drift.) Here's hoping that movie project of Travelogue comes to fruition. Along with the autobiography. Along with the Berstein project of open tunings. Along with the box set of true rarities. Along with another exhibition of paintings. Along with an album??? There's still the possibility of our forking down cash for new things Joni. I have to agree with you--he does a decent Jaco imitation, in fact I think he's quite good, but he's no Jaco. That change probably had some effect on Joni's music but, how much the departure of Jaco led to the more "rock" sound of the 80s is hard to say. (In fairness, Klein certainly showed in live versions of the Jaco material that he could play jazzier stuff.) (Finally, got me a couple of bumper stickers that say JMDL.COM Don Juan's Reckless Daughter.) I also find her voice very appealing in The Hissing of Summer Lawns. She was getting Jazzy during that period and was very strong and interesting. I also love the way she puts in the high parts among the low like in Wild Things Run Fast where she breaks into, "winter beat the pines about..." or in Lady's Man where she throws her voice on "well I've known heart breakers... you could charm the diamonds off a rattle snake... ladies bring it on over when you give them the glance; they don't stand a chance." Just a couple of lines to inform you that I was able to complete the official JoniFest 2005 DVDs (a set of 4). Laurent sent me his tapes and so the set is inclusive of his clips (the majority) with the addition of some of mine, more or less it should cover all songs performed in France. I am quite satisfied with the result, noises, plastic crackling in the wind, spiders etc. are also included in the performances but that will add only some rustic flavour. I have already blackmailed some of the JoniFesters separately with the clips that nobody should dare to see and which are obviously not part of the official release... I will destroy them only for a high ransom ;-) If anyone from the list would like to have a copy of the whole set, please contact me or Laurent. I accept the responsibility only for the editing and assembling of the video, the taping is Laurent's mastery! But 99% of the credits should go to the fine artists who performed on those starry nights and the inspiring Muse who moved us all. I don't know whether they will be playable on USA NTSC system, they were filmed with the European PAL standard. I am optimistic to think that they might be visible on a PC DVD drive but I am not sure. Maybe our JoniFesters from USA will be able to confirm that. Ciao once more from sunny and warm Trieste. Beverly Sills???? Wow!!!! What a great coincidence and experience for you! What a story!!!! When you think about the odds of that happening you have to just wonder! I'm sure that is an experience you will never forget! This is going to sound horrible but I do not have Mingus! I have listened to her Mingus era via Shadows and Light and I love it! "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" and "Dry Cleaner From Des Moines" are two songs where I feel that Joni took things to another level vocally. Her lyrics were amazing on both songs but for me, it was about her vocalization! Boy did she jump around on both and did it so very, very well! Listening to her and actually trying to sing the songs was a lesson in vocals I will never forget! (although listening to Joni sing at any time is always a good study!) Words cannot describe what she and her music mean to me! She takes my breath away! As far as I am concerned, her talent is off the charts! Joseph thank you and thank your friends for their kind words. Tell them I have ten or eleven songs ready to go for a second CD. I just have to find a way to get them recorded. It will be called "I'm Still Here" (because I don't plan on going away! Smile!) The band that backed me up for the concert is ready to record with me...I just have to get all the pieces in place. I've received last week the "definitive" edition of the Jonifest 2005 videos that Adriano, from Trieste, has *very kindly* sent to me. Kudos to Adriano's editing skills (some transition effects between his recordings and Laurent's are almost profesional). Of course they're very beautiful to see (specially the first set with daylight) and a loved reminder of that magic moments... You know, I'm so busy these weeks that I feel I could scream... (I only watched some 3/4 parts of it... and in Saturday night) but I have *begun* to extract the audio from them... Well, here's a little tip First, one wonderful rendition from the soul of every party that's cool (hey, man, life's more grey when you're not around... but you're here, yes you are): I've called it "I'm From America Blues"... special interest from accompaniants: Anita and Randall's guitar... and that "air harmonica" from The Man himself! http://s54.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=22ZHIQFGBWR403CGQVLH9ISC9B and another; I've chosen this because it's the surprise of the fest: well, you already know how Great Stryngs, Anita, Claudia, Catherine, Thierry are. (hmm, I've got to convert some of Jamie's songs now...). But this "out-of-the-blue" man surely did blow us away... and, besides, there's a rendition of A Case Of You, and it gets extra points for that... http://s60.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2IHU72MB7RASP0S0JHMVOXJULS I'll keep you updated when I'm able to extract all the audio from the videos (I'm pretty sure it won't be till next week...). Of course the first burned discs from it will go to Catherine the Great... but you can ask me for a copy; I'm not sure how many of them I'll send, so it will be great if you can make copies for it for anybody interested. Write to me offlist, please, and I'll settle an structure for its distribution (I guess that'll be the best way) (don't forget to tell me if you can burn discs or not) Well, Many Thanks for being There! Well, in '82 he was still working. I mean, maybe you're right, I really don't know, but I'm pretty sure Larry would have got the job anyway. From Wally's interview with Jaco's wife, Indgrid: WB: I'm wondering. Why did Jaco stop playing with Joni? IP: I don't know. Maybe there was a falling out that I wasn't aware of. WB: I know that Larry Klein on bass came along soon after that. IP: I don't know if they ever had any plans of continuing or if it was just the way things went. They had a very close relationship. I would say that it certainly was a love relationship between the two of them. WB: Romantic love? IP: Maybe not romantic, but I certainly think there was a very close relationship between the two of them. WB: A deep, friendly kind of love. IP: Yeah. (I'll just add for the record that Jaco's family and many close to him, including Pat Metheny, dispute alot of the stories about Jaco at that time.) There is a CD on CDBaby called: "Portrait of Jaco - The Early Years." http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/jacopastorius If you click on sample 33 "Refuge of the Roads", Joni talks about Jaco and says that someone (she doesn't remember who) told her there was "this weird bass player in Florida", that Joni was weird, and Jaco was weird and they'd probably get along just fine.
