Dear Kate, Idahoans always relate to rivers 1) because they don't know north from that-a-way; 2) They are either coming from or going to a river for fishing escapades; 3) there are only two directions in Idaho, up-river and down-river. The area you once played is the home of the local band Reckless Kelly. They are becoming well known on the Americana circuit and are somewhat like Steve Earl and the Dukes when they rock out. They descended from Muzzy Braun and the Boys, they being The Boys, Muzzy being their sister if I have this right. The Stanley area is also part of Ernest Hemingway's old stomping grounds, on the other side of the mountain from Sun Valley. It is the Redfish Lake and Sawtooth Mountains area which is most likely the purtiest place in the Lower 48, if not the most spectacular. As far as horses are concerned, Quarter Horses are almost a religion in our family. But about 15 years back my mom went 'piscopalian on us and brought Paint Horses into the fold. Of course Paints can be registered with Paint on the sire side and Quarter on the dam side, so its all one big fambly of horseflesh. My wife recently bought a Warm Blood for dressage. My mom refers to it as the "draft horse", which is sorta true, but she might keep it to herself for the sake of family harmony. They ain't no Quarter in a Warm Blood nowhere, she says. Course we don't intend on breeding the Warm Blood, so it won't contaminate the bloodlines hereabouts. [Deep secret: our Warm Blood mare has fouled three mules. Don't spread this around or the hee-hawin' may never stop. The onlyist thing more lowly than a draft horse is a mule in these-here parts.] Kate, what do you play? I'd love to hear your music. _________________ ron wrote: >ani difranco happy rhodes - beautiful voice, great songwriting - deserves far more recognition than she gets janis ian jimi joni laura nyro leonard cohen mark heard - im so glad to see that buddy miller is apparently a fan & managed to get one of marks songs recognised as song of the year (or some other such award) at the americana awards - only, what 16 years after mark died :-( pity tho about some of the truly dreadful engineering on some of his albums) mary chapin carpenter - still one of the most soothing voices ever. a real talent for capturing personal & individual emotions ......... mary gauthier - one for the future if she keeps up the momentum of her first albums michael & margo timmins (his songwriting & arrangements - her singing - sublime) neil young paul simon phil keaggy - another somewhat underappreciated artist due to concentrating on christian music. a wonderful guitarist who has become somewhat more adventurous lately, yet still hasnt lost the melodicism. i was glad to see one of the guitar magazines (guitar player??) rating him as one of the top 100 guitarists. just take a listen to "acoustic sketches" & be blown away..... richard thompson sonny landreth steve earl tom waits >van morrison" Dear ron, Thanks again for the JMDL tip. All you other JMDLers can blame him for turning me loose on this list. I agree with your choices for the Triple Threats. I don't know Happy Rhodes, Sonny Landreth and Mark Heard (except for Buddy's cover of "I Worry Too Much" from "Universal Unite House of Prayer".) I'm a career-long fan of Laura Nyro and Janis Ian. They are about the only contemporaries of Joni who could be mentioned in the same sentence. They are all like-minded and strong individuals, divinely talented and damn good-looking, too. It seems like they all could have hung out together and got along well. They'd let Ani hang out with them, only if she'd keep quiet and fetch them absinthes and turkish tobacco and cabana boys when they needed them. Mary Gauthier would bring over the Alice B. Tolklas brownies and hot potato pie. They'd all pig out and go to the steam baths and write obscene haikus on the frosted glass walls. Leonard Cohen would be going, "Can I watch, I won't touch anything." Of course, Tom Waits would be playing the piano in the bar and leering at anything that slithered by, man, beast or fowl. Paul Simon would drop in and offer to marry one and all and bestow children upon them, if only they'd give up all for his love. Steve Earl would try to marry them all, but one after the other. That leaves Michael & Margo Timmins, but they're good by themselves, and that's the way they like it. And Van would sing, "If I ventured in the slipstream Between the viaducts of your dreams Where the mobile steel rims crack And the ditch and the backroads stop Could you find me Would you kiss my eyes And lay me down In silence easy To be born again." Bernard Shakey would film the whole affair with a hand-held 16 mm camera, and say to himself, "I may be from Canada, but this seems like the Great American Love Story to me. I have the theme for my next album right here in the can. I'll call it Coolsville." Jimi said, Hey man, I already did that and called it "Electric Ladyland". "Have you ever been (have you ever been) to Electric Ladyland? The magic carpet waits, for you. So don't you be late Oh, (I wanna show you), the different emotions (I wanna run to) the sounds and motions Electric woman waits for you and me So it's time we take a ride, we can cast all of your hang-ups over the seaside. While we fly right over the love filled sea Look up ahead, I see the loveland, soon you'll understand." __________________________________________________________ Em wrote off-line to ask about the moniker "Bonneville Bruce". > I am known as Bonneville Bruce >hi Bruce and welcome. What the "Bonneville" for? a bike, perhaps? >Em >Florida >:) I am a native of Sandy, Utah, the closest town to the Alta and Snowbird ski resorts. I first skiied Alta on December 10, 1960, and have been at it ever since. I lived and worked at Snowbird from 1973 to 1977. Bonneville is a style of skiing my peers and I practiced at those resorts in the '70s. It is named after the Bonneville Salt Flats about 75 miles due west of there where the automotive world land speed records have all been set. I was bequeathed the title "The Bonneville" for the nearly suicidal disregard I had for the power of gravity on those slopes, while in pursuit of my own unofficial world land speed record. (In case you are wondering I was never officially timed or measured in these endeavors, it was a matter of dedication to wild-ass skiing at its most extreme expression. We would frequently approach the 100 mph threshold on those very steep runs. ) We used to hustle rich Texans with this who-can-get-to-the-bottom-first gig. They would always bite, and we'd always drink free beer. Texans were so easy, because they skiied on their egos, not their legs, or, all hat, no cattle. I still ski and I still have all my appendages, which is miraculous considering the amout of abuse I heaped upon them. I'm still fast, too, but it is all I know how to do, no grace nor finess. Bonneville Bruce Hankering for the deep powder of Alta at its finest, an orgasmic experience, with lots of clothes on. There is no finer skiing experience. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Oct 2005 13:19:08 -0700 (PDT) From: Nuriel Tobias Subject: What Is The Album Where Joni's Voice Sounds The Best Just the other day, as we were listening to Down To You, my love said to me that he finds Court and Spark to be the album where Joni "had" her best voice ever, warm, solid and inspiring. As for me, as someone who listens to Joni since childhood, album by album, i still find that Joni's voice on Song To a Seagull is her best ever. I can't really say what it is, it's simply too magical to explain, but there must have been something during the recording of this album that made Joni reach depths, hights and levels of voice that to me still sound unnatural, in a way that Joni on STASG sounds like a prophet, a sirene, a witch and an angel. My man, on the other hand, says that the more "human" Joni's voice has gotten, the better it sounds. So i thought i should ask you all - what do you think - what album presents the best Joni voice? But I kind of know what you mean about STAS...that sound is very special - and I like it alot. I think others may find it "put on" or something. :) Em Ps: but I also like her voice on Travelogue, in some places.... - --- Nuriel Tobias wrote: > So i thought i should ask you all - what do you think - what album > presents the best Joni voice? ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Oct 2005 16:01:02 -0500 From: "mack watson-bush" Subject: Re: What Is The Album Where Joni's Voice Sounds The Best Nuriel asks: > So i thought i should ask you all - what do you think - what album presents the best Joni voice?
