I'll repeat a story I've told here a couple of times. (Sorry long-timers - you can hit delete now.) A former boyfriend of mine was at Trudy Taylor's (James' mother) house. It was during James' and Carly's marriage, BUT one wall of the den was filled with photos of James and Joni. Trudy clearly preferred Joni to Carly, and said as much. So, I really think the "woman who had a mouth like yours" was James' mother, not Kate, his sister. And now, if you don't mind, I'll quote my own lyrics in reference to weeds springing up through cracks in the pavement: Already there are blades of grass Pushing through volcanic ash Oddly enough, the song was about said former boyfriend and I wrote it while sitting on the floor of the airport, waiting for his plane to arrive. Well, that's enough needless trivia for today. lots of love, Anne ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Sep 2005 08:04:21 -0500 From: Subject: How tall is Joni? I hate to disagree with the esteemed John Calimee (hi, John! How's life treating you these days? And how are *you* treating life? ;-) ). However, my best guess is that Joni is 5'5" or 5'6": certainly, no taller than the latter. I had the great honor of meeting Joni twice in person. The first meeting occurred in 1998, and the second, in 2000, in Saskatoon. I'm a little under 5'4", and, if Joni was taller than me (I believe she was), it sure wasn't by much! The first time I met her, in a hotel lobby, I was struck almost immediately by how much smaller she seemed in person than I had imagined her being, and how dwarfed she seemed by the surroundings. I also don't doubt that she was once taller. As at least one person has already implied, it's all too common for people--and especially, for women--to lose inches in height as they grow older. Mary. Returning to lurkdom. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Sep 2005 11:31:06 EDT From: JOSEPHBMCGOWAN@aol.com Subject: Carnival in Kenora ( History) Hi All, The Complete Version of "Carnival in Kenora"( that Bob so kindly made Available) is not a true Studio Track at all. It was recorded in Detroit on September 14, 1966 as A publishing Demo. Some 14 songs were set down by Joni (in mostly one Take) . They were used to make Leadsheets for Copyright for her then "Gandalf Publishing Company" with Husband Chuck Mitchell. These Versions would sometimes be sent, along with the Leadsheets, to Certain Artists for Possible Covers. This is how this Excellent Find Surfaced. The $25,000 advance that Doug stated Cadence Records advanced Joni was used to record Seven songs early in 67. Producer Corky Siegel arranged (in a Judy Collins Style) Six of Joni's songs ( including a Weird R&B Version of "Circle Game") plus an Amazing Cover of the "Peter, Paul & Mary" Song "Take off your Old Coat" The Six Joni Songs Done Were 1) Born to take the Highway 2) Come to the Sunshine 3) Play little David 4) Night in the City 5) Blue on Blue 6) Circle Game Hopefully one Day this true First Album will be Released. Perhaps on a Real Joni Box Set. I have Heard it, and it sounds a lot better then STAS. Thanks Again Bob, Everyone Take Care, Joey, ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Sep 2005 18:00:56 +0200 From: Karen Marie Espeland Subject: Re: A Case of You' and Joni Mitchell's romantic liaisons > Thank you Mia - your interpretation is very interesting - and it does not > seem unlikely that the song is about three men in stead of one! > > 'I've always had a hunch that A Case of You was about three different > guys, > each verse assigned to a different man. Kinda like what David Crosby did > with Guinnivere (but with three different women).' Perhaps her rupture with Graham Nash brought back memories and feelings of previous chagrins d'amour and inspired her even more to distil her experiences into such a beautiful song? I find the liquid-metaphor that reverberate throughout the song, very interesting - blood, wine (with all its religious connotations), paint, ink.. I recently bought Graham Nash's album 'Songs for Beginners' from 1971 to get an impression of what went on in the music scene in NY/LA towards the end of the 60s/beginning of 70s. This album came out the same year as Blue, so I thought it might be interesting to compare them... One of the songs called 'I Used to Be a King' seems to carry some Joni resonance through its metaphors, even though 'I Had a King' (Songs to a Seagull) was about her ex-husband Chuck Mitchell. Interesting to see how metaphors can be recycled! It is very inspiring to get such good responses to my questions about 'A Case of You' - thank you everyone! I would also like to thank you for wishing me good luck with my thesis - very much appreciated! :) Karen Marie ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Sep 2005 10:33:55 -0700 (PDT) From: Jahida Jorganes Subject: My bad To everyone who got a Hi5 invite: I'm sorry!!! Although in truth, she did seem to have kept the Finer Tunes( I mean i could not imagine her having left "Marcie " or "Little Green" behind), she certainly created some real Gems that should one Day be Heard. The Song "Daisy Summer Piper" is among the Five Prettiest Melodies I think she ever composed. It has a lullaby type feel and a similar mood to Phil Och's "Changes" The " Love is like a Big Brass Band " Tune is actually a much earlier Version of "Both Sides Now". It contains the Same Strum, pace, feel, and overall Melody. A Song I had never heard of called "Sad Wind's Blowin" is Heart Wrenching. Every bit as good as the Stuff on "Blue". I don't believe Joni Really Understands how Good she was back then. Perhaps Joel can convince her to allow her Fans access to this amazing Period when the Box Set is Finally Realized. It happened the other day with 'Sergeant Pepper' - whole tracks I'd forgotten.. and then re-reading 'The Great Gatsby ' (oh yeah, now I really remember how much I love this book) and just recently I listened to 'Barangrill' again after what was obviously a For-the-Roses-less hiatus in my life. And I remembered again - or it kind of hit me again - what an amazing song it is, and reminded me that the first time I heard it I felt an absolute frisson of recognition for the sharp startling beauty of its observation - I mean a real prickle on the back of the neck job. And hearing it again I'm remembering why (and - glory - feeling something of that delight again). Why is it so remarkable? Who else was writing songs about the restlessness of the search vs. the savouring of the moment? The swoop of the melodic line - high to low - in the first words, coupled with such an arrestingly precise little vignette - '3 waitresses all wearing black-diamond earrings'. Everything about it has an accomplished sense of rightness - the balance of guitar and voice.. the neat structure of the thing.that engaging sense of conflict and balance ('the thumb and the satchel or the rented Rolls Royce': not a dilemma I've had to grapple with too often! ; 'You want to get movin and you want to stay still..'). the sense of 'working through' the experience to a resolution - 'Well you just have to laugh cos it's all so crazy..') And the freedom and flexibility of voice she gives the last verse - leaving us in the warm glow of the value of living in the Now - its beauty characterized by that warm image of the 'guy at the gaspumps' and his improvised song. Feel good even thinking about it! Like I said - I really like rediscovering. (And I like other people's rediscovery stories too!) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Sep 2005 17:49:17 -0400 From: "anon anon" Subject: Re: Trivia Question: How is the Imax film "The living sea" connected to Joni??? >From: Bob Muller >Reply-To: Bob Muller >To: anon anon , Joni@smoe.org >Subject: Re: Trivia Question: How is the Imax film "The living sea" >connected to Joni??? >Date: Mon, 19 Sep 2005 15:41:54 -0700 (PDT) > >Both won major awards in 1995, Joni took home a Grammy for TI, and TLS won >an Oscar for >best Short Subject Documentary. > >I'm sure this was NOT what you had in mind but as I'm the only contestant I >hereby declare >myself the winner. > >Bob > >NP: Emmylou Harris, "Plaisir d"Amour" > I didn't know that...but sure, you can be the winner... that wasn't what I had in mind... Boy, this is some cool information and really has me drooling. According to the appearance Chronology, she was in Toronto that day. I suppose it would be possible to have done both? Or maybe she cut these tracks a day or two prior to opening at the 7 of Clubs? Did that date come from ASCAP records or something? Just curious. It looks like the first CD could be filled up with all the goodies you've described here. I really feel like we'll get this stuff eventually, I just wish it was sooner than later. With Bobby D getting so much good press for his upcoming Scorcese film and WONDERFUL 2-CD accompanying soundtrack, maybe the powers that be will follow suit & wriggle these gems loose. Firstly, I have to say thanks again to Pearl for the wonderful photography, and for sharing copies with me... There were actually 2 pics, in the first one Joni was really gripping my hand, and yes I thought her skin felt very soft (you have to understand that I was in somewhat of a state of incoherent rapture at this point). After the first picture, she told Pearl to take another one because she thought her eyes were closed (which the picture proved to be true) so this was the 2nd take and it's perfect. I like to think that she did the old "2nd picture" trick just to hold my hand for as long as she could....well, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. Like I told Jeff earlier - lurking sucks.
