According the the Gospel of Matthew account of the nativity of Jesus (chapter 2), a number of those with wisdom (magi) came from the Jewish community in Babylon to the Roman controlled province of Judea because they perceived the arrival of a special servant of God. Herod was the Idumean king who Rome placed over Judea and he was known for his cruelty and elimination of potential rivals. The Magi went to Herod to ask what he might know of this special birth, the story goes, and they made their way to Bethlehem where Jesus was 1-2 years old. They presented gifts to this special one, gold, frankincense and myrrh (which gifts had a special meaning). Being warned in a dream not to return the way they came, through Herod's court, they returned home another way. Likely Herod would have killed the Magi. Matthew's account: In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem,Or astrologers; Gk magia 2asking, 'Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 12And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road. OK, so I'm a day late & a dollar short...I mean, it's not like anyone really READS these things anyway, right? But a new month is upon us, and that can only mean one thing - yet another release in our burgeoning series of Joni Covers, and this month's is another varied, eclectic, and globe-spanning assortment. And as is usually the case, I didn't gather all these jew-wells on my own, so first let me thank... Nuriel Tobias Monica Cardinale Paul Maggio ...for their help and contributions. And now, let's spin these September songs: 1. Eddie Shelton - Both Sides Now: Perhaps some of you partook of this one when I sent it out last weekend - it starts off like Michael Murphy's "Carolina In The Pines" but quickly jumps into the familiar BSN in toe-tapping bluegrass style. And check out a young Vince Gill on dobro. 2. Lothar Theismann - Black Crow: Lothar plays a nice acoustic guitar here, but his vocalist is a bit hit & miss which mars this otherwise nice cover. 3. Chava Alberstein - Carey: Thanks to Nuri for this Hebrew language version of Joni's famed Euro-adventure in Greece. Chava is a superstar in her homeland and has been called the "Joan Baez" of Israel. And like Joan, she's been around a while and is still going strong. I'm a sucker for foreign-language versions anyway, and this recording is great. 4. Lea Oz - Blue: Another Israeli recording, but recorded in English and sung over an electronic trip-hoppy musical track. Very pretty, and also very melancholy as this recording was discovered after her suicide and was considered to be somewhat of a suicide note. 5. Ayshea Brough - Both Sides Now: It appears that Ms. Brough was more actor than singer. This was from a 45 record, so maybe the only thing she recorded. From what I can gather, her claim to fame was playing the role of "Lt. Johnson" in the BBC-TV series UFO. Anyway, her version of BSN is pretty plain, not awful, not very memorable either. 6. Sarah Lentz - River: Hailing from Pennsylvania, Sarah's got a warm clear voice - she's been compared to Carole King & Fiona Apple - and her take on River is lovely and heartfelt. Hear a snippet at: http://cdbaby.com/cd/lentz3 7. Susan Anders - The Circle Game: Berkeley native Susan Anders has released a couple of albums and is more known as a vocal coach. That would explain why EV-ER-Y SYL-LA-BLE IS SO SUC-CINCT-LY PRO-NOUNCED, which sounds OK but is a tad too pristine to my ears; pretty but pretty boring as well. http://cdbaby.com/cd/susananders 8. Brad Mehldau - Roses Blue: Now THIS one is anything but boring! Famed jazz pianist Mehldau turns in a spell-binding tour de force on one of Joni's most haunting melodies, improvising but never creating a huge distance from Joni's melodic structure. Though you'd never think so (until the end), this is a live recording from his "Live In Tokyo" release; sadly, this is only available as a bonus track on the Japanese release. 9. Michel Tal - Both Sides Now (Hebrew): Keep those dreidels spinning for yet another Hebrew language Joni cover! And a pretty one it is. I forget what you told me about Michel, Nuri, so feel free to fill in the blanks. 10. Donna Colton - River: From Syracuse, Donna's alto with guitar accompaniment gives it an Indigo Girls feel. Pretty & intimate: http://cdbaby.com/cd/donnacolton2 11. Ron & Ann Holm - Rainy Night House: British vinyl from the 70's, and pretty obscure. Starts out OK with a mournful fiddle, and has a classic English folk sense about it. 12. Roland Staring - Big Yellow Taxi: From The Netherlands, Roland's band sounds great and adds some nice colors (harmonica, slide guitar) but he just doesn't have the vocal chops to match his band. 13. Weavers Green - Both Sides Now: Has a "Chad & Jeremy", "Peter & Gordon" feel to it, you can close your eyes and envision a Coca-Cola advert. Besides, I don't trust green people. 14. Stage - River: OK, so you've just made your baby cry/say goodbye...you pop a valium, sit down at the piano and moan your way through this song to therapeutically make your way through your depression. At least, that's what this sounds like. NYC grunge-band Stage's lead singer Ryan Stahr steps up & performs this track, available only as a download from the band's fansite. 15. Lesley Byers & The Jazz Cats - Twisted: But don't worry, we're not in that valium-induced funk for long; matter of fact, these Chicago-based "Cats" really make this song swing and jump with a very sharp horn and rhythm section. Lots of Twisted covers tend to bleed into one another, but this one's a standout. http://cdbaby.com/cd/byers2 16. Dave Falciani - Big Yellow Taxi: If you're ready for a little exercise, spin this BYT cover from a Step Aerobics CD, and get that heart rate up, if only for 4:34. Feel the burn, people. 17. Richard Abel - Both Sides Now: Quebec is the home for pianist Abel, who is very able indeed, if a bit schmaltzy for my tastes. This Hallmark-card BSN cover comes from his tribute to Canadian composers. http://www.richardabel.org/discography.htm 18. Roland Staring - A Case Of You: See track 12...I always think this is going to be Lowell George singing "Willin'". This one is just Roland and guitar, so it lacks the sonic variety of his take on BYT. And an interesting lyrical change "I could HAVE a case of you, and I would still be on my feet...". So maybe a little ointment is all he needs. 19. Rachel Yamagata - The River: More music from the Windy City...Rachel's style is more pop/soul and she tries to put some of that treatment into this piano/vocal treatment, and while it is somewhat soulful it's a little sloppy and she slurs the words quite a bit. Maybe her reaction to valium is different than Ryan's, I dunno. 20. Uncle Seth - Big Yellow Taxi: Downloaded from this Toronto cover band's website, this version is pretty ragged. They're recently released a studio cover of BSN that fares much better, so stay tuned for that one, coming to you in 2006. And that brings us to a close of Chapter 68 in the never-ending book of Joni covers. Please let me know if you're interested in obtaining a copy, and until next time, keep those Joni covers playing! Got this from a Jersey musician site... A note from Sue: Dear Family and Friends, My husband, Michael Brecker, has been diagnosed with MDS (myelodysplastic syndrome), and its critical that he undergoes a stem cell transplant. The initial search for a donor (including Michael's siblings and children) has not yet resulted in a suitable match. Michael's doctors have told us that we need to immediately explore ALL possible options. This involves getting as many people of a similar genetic background to be tested. There are some important points to understand concerning this process: 1. The screening involves a blood test only. It can be done very quickly either at a marrow donation center or at a LOCAL LAB. The cost is anywhere from $40 to $75 and your insurance may cover it. (In NYC, you can call Frazier, at the NY Blood Bank, at 212-570-3441, and make an appointment for HLA typing. It costs $40.00.) Check with your local blood bank, or go to http://www.marrow.org to find the donor center nearest you. 2. Your blood typing information can be posted on the international registry, if you choose, where it would also be available to others in need of a transplant. BEING ON THE REGISTRY DOESN'T MEAN YOU HAVE TO DONATE, it just means that you may be ASKED to do so. You can take your name off the registry at any time. 3. Should you be selected as a potential donor for Michael, please understand that there have been tremendous advances in bone marrow transplants and the term itself can be misleading. Bone marrow donation is no more invasive than giving blood. Stem cells are simply harvested from your blood and then transplanted to Michael. 4. A match for Michael would be most likely to come from those of Eastern European Jewish descent. If you or anyone you know are in this category please make a special effort to immediately get tested. Ultimately, you would be doing something not just for Michael, but for so many more who are in a similar situation as my husband. 5. You are now part of our internet-based drive for donor testing. If everyone who receives this can motivate a bunch of their friends to get tested, and those friends then forward this email to get their friends to get tested, we will have rapidly expanded the pool of potential donors. I urge all of you to get tested AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Any local blood center/Red Cross center can assist in organizing a drive for Michael, although it would be desirable if you can get a large group, e.g. a synagogue, to sponsor it. Should you have any questions about this, please don't hesitate to get in touch with Michael's management office at 212.302.9200 or info@michaelbrecker.com.
