It broadcast a one-hour compilation of Joni's one and only concert in the Netherlands (as far as I know), in The Hague on 27 April 1983. I could not be present at the time, nor have I ever seen any copies of this concert on any trading list ... and, believe me, I am an avid trader. It's a crisp, well recorded show that I would love to share with all of you. I have 10 copies here, ready to be mailed. Real good, and for free. Just send me a message off-line with your address. It would be nice if you could re-offer it again to other list members if you have copying capabilities. I will pick the lucky 10 on Sunday afternoon, so digesters have a chance to react too. John van Tiel ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Sep 2005 20:48:20 +0200 From: "John van Tiel" Subject: Jonifest in France and more Six weeks after Les started the JMDL discussion list in 1996, I joined. I have never been away since. I joined because of my love for Jonis music. I stayed because I found kindred spirits people who enriched my life in many ways. Music, wisdom, temper, politics, love. In 1999, I went to my first Jonifest at Asharas house in Topsfield. I was in shock for weeks afterwards. As if I had met all the friends I wanted to meet all my life, all in just one weekend. Others have had similar experiences. Jonifests are not sectarian meetings. They bring out the best in the attendees, even good ol-fashioned cynics like me. I have missed only one major Jonifest (2004) since then. Many of the people I met, have become close friends (in spirit, some of them are geographically not all that close). Several have visited my home on the safe- Dutch coast. Many ended up with butt blisters because of the obligatory bike ride (30 miles minimum). I may not have spoken the words out loud, but I often thought: I love you for who and what you are. The recognition and understanding of Joni s music seems to be a solid base for bonding. In May 2000, I was present at Pazfest in New Orleans. Wally Breese, the founder of JoniMitchel Dot Com, had just died of AIDS. To thank and commemorate him, we lit candles before the performances started. Claudia stood next to me and put her hand on my shoulder. She did not know what that meant to me at the time. The performances in New Orleans were fantastic. Michaels enthusiasm and hospitality were incredible. On 30 August 2000, Claudia and I, met again in Topsfield, MA. We have been together ever since. On 30 August 2005, I received Less message asking for support for Michael. He had to flee the New Orleans area to escape Hurricane Katrina. Michael, you are one of those friends to me. So is Jack Neilson. Where is he now? The Howlin Wolf Club in downtown New Orleans, the place where my new life started, may have been on tv dozens of time over the past few days. I did not recognize it. Everything is flooded in New Orleans. I can see the Dutch sea dykes from my window. On 30 August 2005, 15.30 hrs, I was at a funeral parlour. One of my best friends died from a heat attack last Saturday. He was 49. On tv, almost 1,000 people dead after a stampede in Bagdad. Because someone shouted something. Words dont kill? In 2001, on September 9, I had just returned from Jonifest in Topsfield when three planes caused a worldwide shock. I wrote about the conflicting feelings on this list. The warmth at the fest, the heat in the street. Where is Patrick? How is Kate? Again. The fest in France was so beautiful. Claudia and I met old friends, new friends. Mike. Emiliano. Laurent. Bob. Ashara. Eric. Catherine Michael Schumacher McKay and her kids. Reine Lulu et entourage. Jean-Yves. Tiery. Guy. Adriano & family. Lieve (who speaks the most beautiful Dutch and whose name means dear). Les. Stryngs. Martin. Chris. Jamie. Bob. Laurents family and friends. Garrett who forced me to sing a John Denver song threatening to expose that I have always secretly been a fan of Olivia Newton-John. The place was paradise. The wine was good. The food was late, but very tasty. The weather was perfect. The cats and kittens were mesmerizing. The music was sometimes superb (hey, I live with Claudia. She loves to play and she does not know half how good she is. I heard her practice with Randall for almost a week in the room next to my office it was spell-binding). Stryngs is a lyrical supertalent who silently made me cry with her songs. She is slightly less talented as a hairdresser, though. Ask Randall. I have yet to be treated by her in her professional capacity as a psychiatrist so no rating there. And Les and Bob have special places in my heart (and Claudias). Bob rode/drove back with us to Holland (via Belgium). Yes, Bob, that moment outside the frietenkot with the fries, meatballs, bitterballs and beer when all of a sudden we had arrived 5 minutes earlier Jonis Magdalene Laundries sounded from the radio in this fries stand, was truly magical. And come back and stay longer. Claudia and I said goodbye to Bob in Amsterdam and spent another few days at the beach. Then Claudia went ahead to the USA. I will follow. The trip through France and the fest had fuelled us up. I felt happy, inspired, energized, in love. All pre-holiday work fatigue was gone. I had met so many friends again. We had been at magical places. We had eaten and drunk too much. Just before Claudia boarded the plane, we repeated how wonderful a time we had had. How wonderful a time. Thank you so much Laurent. 30 August 2005 was only yesterday.
