It was funny picking out the Joni fans who were leaving after the first couple of songs. We left after the third. With my luck, they probably did a bunch of Joni covers after we left. No offence taken, Patti.....in fact, much like Michael F confesses, the notion of female sexuality vs male didn't enter my mind when making the observation. Springsteen has made some of his bleakest work in the years since finding happiness in his second marriage, moving into less-than-rosy storytelling rather than picking through the wreckage of, and subsequent rejuvenation in, his own personal relationships as he did from '87 to '92. Most of Joni's peers have at some time taken on the political and sociological in their career; Jackson Browne and Don Henley being other prime examples. But, on the surface, the timing of Joni's shift in lyrical focus in the 80s seemed to tie in with her Larry years. I'm glad she made those records; I still see CMIARS criticised on review sites for being bland and creatively bankrupt, but - Dancin' Clown aside ;) - for me it's anything but. DED is still the finest exponent of that glossy mid-80s sound so many aspired to, and its lyrics still bite. To follow those with the sublime NRH just proved what a class act she continued to be even in her fourth decade of recording. Post-TI she wavered a bit to these ears; I think I read here that TTT is one of the worst-produced records of its time, and I'd definitely agree with that. For as long as I can remember, one of the really defining aspects of a Joni Mitchell album, in addition to the lyrics and the musicianship, was just how damn wonderful the records sounded in every way. I can't think of any CD I own that sounds more fabulous than Hejira. I was being a little tongue-in-cheek about my BSN & T-LOG comments, they're just a part of Joni's career that I'm not as partial to, although they were both executed with all the panache we have come to expect of Joni. Given her subsequent retirement, their "fin de siecle" aurra is quite fitting and it wasn't a bad way to draw a line under her amazing career. I just prefer the Hejiras and CMIARSs, when Joni was still writing songs that inspired awe, rather than recycling material in new styles. Just go easy on the themed compilations from now on please, Reprise! :) Jason. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Aug 2005 19:36:16 -0700 From: Randy Remote Subject: Re: Upcoming Dolly album - sans Joni Interesting duets...when was the last time Mary Hopkin released something?
