I'm sure that everyone is in shock. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and to your brother-in-law and family. My goodness! I really do hope you get the painting and I am so glad that you are standing your ground on just putting your bid in with a modest escalation amount! What a warm invitation you have put out to me and the JMDL if you should win the bid!!! I will have to take you up on it when possible!!! How gracious. Yes I am the one who is giving the concert in October. Thanks so much for sending those good thoughts my way! This is the way I've always wanted to do music so I am going to "go for the gusto"! (Wasn't that a commercial in the 70's?) Please do keep us posted on the progress of your bid and all the best to you and your family during this difficult time. Love, Sherelle Loren wrote: Sherelle, I placed a bid on it yesterday, with a modest escalation amount. So, if it does make it to the walls of my house, you'd be welcome to come and take a peak. I've received e-mails from the guy offering the litho offering to sell it to me outright for 4 digits (he'd pull it back if I'd offer to pay that much). We've had some serious family issues recently (my brother-in-law's step son met a tragic, untimely end), so this lithograph is not our most important consideration right now. I told the offering guy, that I would not be getting into a last-minute bidding war like he reports that his last signed Joni offering did, but if my offer wins I'll get the painting and we can arrange a house based viewing for all who wanna see it. Only the passage of time will reveal what the future has in mind for us, If I remember correctly, Lori F. mentioned that you will have a concert appearance here in DC in the near future, and if that's you, all the best to you. What do you think? Greetings from the newest member (as of yesterday), In terms of this crazy world in which we live, I've always felt that we're all crazy, but some are just better at hiding it. So, who's got some live Joni recordings to trade? It's been a while since I've traded with anyone for her stuff. As a matter of fact, it was about ten years ago with our dear departed Wally Breese. I'm mostly interested in her material from '66 to '70. I loaned out copies of her Second Fret and Club 47 '66 gigs, and never got them back, so I'd really like to find those first. I just love the "Little Green" on the Philly tape, and her stories of song evolutions between songs are absolutely priceless! Nice to find a place of (Joni) worship! Cheers! It is a commercially printed copy of an original artwork. The fact that Joni signed it adds some value to the paper, but $800 seems a bit steep for an autograph on a commercial litho. If this was a print of some sort (ie. an engraving, photo-silkscreen, aquatint etc.), that would make it a legitimate work of art. As is, this is just a photomechanical copy, a small, printed poster, if you will. During the BSN tour, one could buy similar, though smaller(10x14?), signed lithos for $200 a pop. Just my 2 cents. That's the line the seller is taking, saying it came from the belongings of a record exec. Assuming that's true, I think it is worth more than $800, and may fetch $2000. The ones sold on the BSN tour were not limited editions. They had them at Berkeley for $100 but I waited 'til the show started, and by then they were gone. Damn. From articles of the time and interviews about the time, you do get the feeling (and often the evidence!) that she was going though a depression (the house in the Canadian back-bush, reading of all theories of modern thought and philosophy and psychology) all point to an outward manifestation of disturbance. It ended around Court and Spark. Her next album turns away from her inner life and describes the life around her. From the opening verse of C&S, love comes to her door and 'has a madman's soul', Free Man In Paris talks about how Geffen preferred a time when he was away from it all (something she proably felt akin to enough to write a song about - and she did!), People's Parties she 'feels like she's sleeping', the other person has broader sensibilites, while she lives on nerves and feelings' which might be sensitivity or might be a person whose sensibilities are frayed. She's observing life and the lives of other people and they seem larger and more colourful than her own, her life seems to be locked in to and overly-introspective phase. Even in Just Like This Train, she's "looking for a reason to resume". Resume what? Her life? Is it at a standstill at this point? Troubled Child is about seeing a shrink and her thoughts on the how and the why, whether its about her or not is speculative but it's too well described to be merely observed. And of course, we know she's okay by the end as she includes 'Twisted' as a cover which lets us know that she might have the crazies but at least she's got her sense of humour about it and it actually is probably a good thing. Certainly after she holed up in the cabin after finishing LOTC and coming out with Blue which is just so exposing, not touring, wanting to find herself, the solitary confinement of For The Roses, seem to be her 'lost years' until Geffen persuades her back to LA and lives in his house as a dinnerguest that never left. She describes that period as her depression period... what was the phrase she used in WOHAM? Spiritual shift, spiritual change... rebalancing... I dunno but yes... she lived on a knife edge of change for a while. Most of us at some point do go through that period. She was just brave enough to describe it. You asked... it's nearly 2am and I'm thinking in overdrive... I am embarassed to say how much I spent on a gold audiophile copy of Hejira. But hey I shouldn't be here with you guys. Saw the Karla Bonoff show in a small S.C. town (Newberry Opera House), and she was fantastic. Of course she played all her great recognizable material. Her band is really good. She signed autographs and she even let me sit with her for a photo. Beyond that, I mailed a copy and asked her to sign it. Had it in my hands in two weeks with the autograph. What a quality singer and individual.....and a songwriter. I think she is still touring. Check her website. I think I should. My photo (our photo) may be there! Mike NP - P.J. But you are thinking very well. I have never pondered this stage of Joni's life so deeply, Jamie, but everything you said rings clear -- and fresh! -- which is difficult to do with someone who's been a Joni fan for more than 30 years and on this list for more than 5. Speaking of "I told you when I met you I was crazy," Sam Phillips has a line that echoes that for me. She sings, "I was broken when you got me" in a song called "How to Stop." - --Smurf __________________________________ Yahoo! Mail for Mobile Take Yahoo! Mail with you!
