This was not always the case; when I purchased it about a year ago, I could barely listen to half of it in one sitting. I had already heard the two songs that were on "Misses" but these did not touch me as much as other Joni songs. Now, though I greatly appreciate this later work of Joni's. The sound of her voice and the instruments is sweeter, and I agree with one reviewer that the lack of guest musicians and singers gives the album more "immediacy." It seems as though she'd moved passed some anger she had in the mid and late 80s without sacrificing the personal and political messages she hoped to convey through the songs. I think the best example of this balance is the track, "Windfall (Everything for Nothing)." It's my favorite song on the album, but I cannot tell what it is exactly about. Anyone care to shed some light? This album reminds me of Carly Simon's "Have you seen me lately?" In fact, their release dates are only about a year a part. Joni's album is more profound and complext, but to me these works both represent a coming of age during a person's middle-age. "Night Ride Home" also reminds me of a more accessible "Wild Things Run Fast." Take care, Sean "Going to the church You chant For my downfall Chanting for my house My friends You want it all The pillows on my bed The visions in my head You want too much You want too badly You want everything for nothing" -Joni Mitchell, "The Windfall (Everything for Nothing)" "What's someone like me doing in a life like this?" - Cyndi Lauper, "Someone Like Me" "It took an hour, maybe a day But once I really listened, the noise Just went away" - Liz Phair, "Stratford-On-Guy" (1993) "On a clear day, I bet you can see the class struggle from here..." - - Katrin Cartlidge (Hannah) in Mike Leigh's "Career Girls" (1997) "All I know of you is in my memory All I ask is you Remember me." - Suzanne Vega "Rosemary" (1998) ____________________________________________________ Start your day with Yahoo! - make it your home page http://www.yahoo.com/r/hs ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Aug 2005 05:11:24 +0100 (BST) From: Jamie Zubairi Subject: Re: Night Ride Home Hmmmm... Yes that 'Windfall' can of worms. Hi Sean, I always like reading your quotes after your posts... The WIndfall is alledgedly (I think we have to write that for legal purposes, and to prevent flaming! lol) her maid who was taking her money, saying she was sending it back to Guatemala but really was taking holidays, so Joni kicked her in the shins and then the maid sued, Joni counter sued. They settled out of court. Initially, I thought it was about Larry ('God, he's so lazy, he does nothing around the house...' I could almost hear her say... but no... that was just fantareal)...
