What sad news but I am hopeful that Susan and Michael will find a donor match. This is one of the wonderful things about the Internet. You can reach the whole world in an instant. I still hear Micahel playing those blazing hot solos on "Black Crow" and "Dry Cleaner from Des Moines" from "Shadows and Light". I also hear Joni giggling as she introduces him to the crowd and has some sort of funny pet name for him. I can never quite make it out but it sounds like, "Wrecky-Brecky". He is an integral part of my Joni experience and I wish him health. Love, Sherelle David forwarded this note: Hello everyone -- Please do read the letter below from my friend Susan Brecker, regarding Mike's serious medical condition. Please spread the word and help if you can.... Love, Nina Hennessey & Ray Marchica FROM: Susan Brecker SUBJECT: Michael Brecker needs your help. Dear Family and Friends, My husband, Michael Brecker, has been diagnosed with MDS (myelodysplastic syndrome), and its critical that he undergoes a stem cell transplant. The initial search for a donor (including Michael's siblings and children) has not yet resulted in a suitable match. Michael's doctors have told us that we need to immediately explore ALL possible options. This involves getting as many people of a similar genetic background to be tested. There are some important points to understand concerning this process: 1. The screening involves a blood test only. It can be done very quickly either at a marrow donation center or at a LOCAL LAB. The cost is anywhere from $40 to $75 and your insurance may cover it. (In NYC, you can call Frazier, at the NY Blood Bank, at 212-570-3441, and make an appointment for HLA typing. It costs $40.00.) Check with your local blood bank, or go to http://www.marrow.org to find the donor center nearest you. 2. Your blood typing information can be posted on the international registry, if you choose, where it would also be available to others in need of a transplant. BEING ON THE REGISTRY DOESN'T MEAN YOU HAVE TO DONATE, it just means that you may be ASKED to do so. You can take your name off the registry at any time. 3. Should you be selected as a potential donor for Michael, please understand that there have been tremendous advances in bone marrow transplants and the term itself can be misleading. Bone marrow donation is no more invasive than giving blood. Stem cells are simply harvested from your blood and then transplanted to Michael. 4. A match for Michael would be most likely to come from those of Eastern European Jewish descent. If you or anyone you know are in this category please make a special effort to immediately get tested. Ultimately, you would be doing something not just for Michael, but for so many more who are in a similar situation as my husband. 5. You are now part of our internet-based drive for donor testing. If everyone who receives this can motivate a bunch of their friends to get tested, and those friends then forward this email to get their friends to get tested, we will have rapidly expanded the pool of potential donors. I urge all of you to get tested AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. Any local blood center/Red Cross center can assist in organizing a drive for Michael, although it would be desirable if you can get a large group, e.g. a synagogue, to sponsor it. Should you have any questions about this, please don't hesitate to get in touch with Michael's management office at 212.302.9200 or info@michaelbrecker.com. Thank you so much for your love and support. We are so grateful. There I was, looking at a Canadian Road/Recreation atlas -- yes, I do this kind of thing all the time, but you all already know I'm strange -- anyway, there I was, innocently looking at the north of Newfoundland when a name jumped out at me: Dildo Run Provincial Park. As Dave Barry would say, I am not making this up (it was in one of his delightful columns that I learned about Head-Smashed-In). Anyway, seeing this name, my first reaction was : Now, here's something I would pay to see. But then reality set in, and I was curious to find out where the name came from. I haven't gotten that far yet, but I'm thinking it was a perfectly innocent name up until this century. Church records indicate that there were at least two towns with the name -- Dildo Cove, and just plain ol' Dildo -- up until recent times; but for readily apparent reasons, the towns changed to more boring names. I'm just glad they kept the historical name for the Park, so that weirdos like me can picture Donald Fagen and Walter Becker being terrorized by a huge, longer-than-it-is-wise metallic monster chasing them towards Grand Falls-Windsor, NF. I couldn't help but notice that the info for D.R.P.P. prominetly mentions shower and laundry facilities, but not bidets (sorry -- too far?); and that Head-Smashed-In is near Fort MacLeod, where a certain flaxen-haired Canadian singer-songwriter was born -- although they moved while she was an infant to Maidstone, a suburb (more or less) of Saskatoon. I hope Joni has been to Head-Smashed-In. One of the stories about the site is that the name came *not* from the manner in which the buffalo/bison met their maker but from a human being who stood too close to the receiving end of the proposition and was posthumously renamed (previously, it was probably something like Dildo-for-Brains) for his miscalculation. Actual website info to follow: Dildo Run Provincial Park, NF Dildo Run Provincial Park is located just south of Twillingate on New World Island. A new comfort station provides shower and laundry facilities and flush toilets. For recreational vehicle users there are larger camp sites and a trailer dumping station. The park's 327 hectares provide visitors with a convenient location to stay while they explore this beautiful and historic area... And at head-Smashed-In's website: Located 18 km north & west of Fort Macleod, Alberta, Canada at a place where the foothills of the Rocky Mountains meet the great plains, one of the world's oldest, largest and best preserved buffalo jumps known to exist -- Head-Smashed-In. Designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981, Head-Smashed-In has been used continuously by aboriginal peoples of the plains for more than 5,500 years. Why is this place a World Heritage Site? Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump is known around the world as a remarkable testimony of prehistoric life. Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump bears witness to a custom practiced by native people of the North American plains for nearly 6000 years. Thanks to their excellent understanding of topography and of bison behavior, they killed bison by chasing them over a precipice and subsequently carving up the carcasses in the camp below. Back to me -- I am more than happy to hear of other, interestingly-named Canadian and U.S. parks, although it would be hard for me to imagine anything knocking these two beauties out of first and second place. Anyone know the last two? I'll google them, but I always appreciate the comments of jmdlers, since, by definition, they have the best musical taste in the known universe... Also curious about anyone's feelings about Emiliana Torrini, and does anyone remember a Brian Kennedy, whose debut (as far as I know) CD came out early in 1991, I believe, although it might have been late 1990 -- I remember hearing a cut from it on the radio and momentarily thinking it was Joni -- her Night Ride Home had yet to come out, and I thought it was an early single of Joni's! All the female artists that have been compared to Joni (often to my complete bafflement), and this was the first singer who actually sounded a little like her to me (okay, one other, but I can't think of her name right at the moment -- her second labum was called Porcelain, one of you will know whom I mean). And immediately after the song was played, the DJ confessed he'd had the exact same experience -- hearing the Brian Kennedy song and thinking it was Joni. I bought that first CD and have it around here someplace, but I'm wondering if he ever put out more. And, hold the front page, I can claim to have been on the scene when she met Joni! It was at the press night of the exhibition of Joni's paintings in London, which I and a friend gate-crashed. Julia was there, and towards the end of the evening she approached Joni and her small entourage. The rest is history... And I agree that there are strange similarities between Julia's voice and Joni's. I say "strange" because Julia actually has a very deep voice; it's only when she sings falsetto that she sounds uncannily like the young Joni. << And immediately after the song was played, the DJ confessed he'd had the exact same experience -- hearing the Brian Kennedy song and thinking it was Joni.
