Jonibashing in Canada's Reader's Digest website, now on roberto h Joni can rail about the music industry cesspool all she wants - doesn't bother me in the least. I've come to the realization after reading tons of interviews that Joni speaks in tones of generalizations. Many of us complain about our employers, yet our employment provides a roof over our heads. Many of us U.S.A. 'ers complain about the cesspool U.S. media and the cesspool U.S. Government, but we still choose to live here. The whole point of complaining is to bring attention to others and, hopefully, somehow influence change to turn the situation around and make things better. Sure there is great music out there today, but why do they make it so darn hard to find it? Sure, the truth about the Bush administration is out there, but why do they make it so darn hard to find it? All that is good is buried far beneath the cesspool. And people have to work, most don't have the time that is required to search beyond the cesspool for all that is good. I think it is unfair to point out the homes and acreage Joni owns, when in reality, Joni made some good investment decisions. She could have squandered the money away in stocks or business ventures, but chose to put her money in real estate. Besides, it is my understanding that Joni made most of her millions during the seventies when the music industry was less of a cesspool. She also had to fight many uphill battles against the Company in order to maintain her artistic integrity, take some bad record deals, etc...it sounds exasperating. She probably could have made a ton more money if only she had that certain look and willingness to cooperate. Thank you, Joni, you go girl! I'm sure R.H. is a great musician and very knowledgeable; but, seriously, how can one possibly know what Monteverdi, de Machaut, and Gesualdo would have thought of Joni's music? This is unfair because there is no way to know, unless time travel were possible. And as for "Empty, Try Another," which somehow got lumped in with "social anthems," - what a great exercise in the creative process. Sampling a cigarette machine! That's pure genius! This reminds me of the time my son (who is incredibly creative and has no willingness to cooperate whatsoever) was stocking shelves at the local grocery store, accidentally bumped two cans of chicken broth and fell in love with the tone. He bought the two cans, sampled them, and wrote a song using his computer tools, using different rhythms and notes. It was artsy and hilarious! This is one of the great things I love about Joni, that fact that as an adult, she still retains much of the imagination that many us us seem to lose after our adolescent years. Plus, she is extremely versatile! Of course Joni is not perfect, she is only human like the rest of us. And she has admitted she's made mistakes. So she sounds like a broken record now railing against the cesspool - big deal! The media does not have to ask her for her opinion, but they do anyhow. Ask and ye shall receive. I love that Reader's Digest interview where she talks about her dad: "He's Scandinavian, and he doesn't talk a lot. The things he says when he does speak - you are not sure if you have been insulted or flattered." So this is where Joni gets it from, LOL! I just hope that when I get old and crotchety, nobody puts flaming poo on my doorstep. Hey, all, Does anyone know if Joni ever considered, say, starting her *own* label (possibly with Klein)? She has the money, and this way, *she* could promote musical artists whom she liked/admired; she could subvert whatever she finds amiss in the music biz (and there's no denying there is a lot wrong with it) rather than just criticizing it. It's hard for me to believe this would never have occurred to her -- I know she hates "the biz", but she could let others handle the parts she doesn't like to deal with (distribution, promotion...), and keep her hand in the parts she wants to influence or control (artistic development, or whatever it's called). I suppose I'm being naive...
