I've been away for a while and am busy catching up on the Digest....the ones I have, anyway. There's a ghost or a demon in this computer and for some unknown reason I lost all of my e-mails until a few days ago. A belated Happy Independance Day to all with wishes that each and every Joni lover enjoyed a wonderful weekend. The death of Luther Vandross was shocking and so disturbing. This man was such an inspiration as he battled his weight problems (11 times I heard in an interview with him) and the magnificent gift of his velvet voice and love of performing will be missed by so many people. Of course, we can listen with gratitude to his CD's but I began to really think about how special each and every day is and perhaps his death has encouraged us....world-wide to pay close attention to how we live our days....to the best of our potential?....to the fullest? Special note to Marianne....I'm doing a lot of research for you and my next posting (maybe later today) will include some suggestions for you to consider. It's a wonderful feeling to feel a connection with you amazing people who contribute to the Digest. Joni reaches out in so many ways and touches our souls and our lives with immeasurable blessings. Anyway, every now and again I like to send a report from the old East Germany. This afternoon I was driving to pick up my wife (who had taken her work car home and I didn4t know, so I was sitting across the street just hanging out for 30 minutes untiol it dawned on me to check inside her office!)(DUHHHHHHHHH) but anyway, on the way there I had the wondows open and was playing "For The Roses". A couple (above named) were sitting eating Ice Cream and heard the music. Uve approached the car and asked if I could turn it up a bit as they simply loved Joni. I rewound the tape starting from the start and we sat and listened until the end. We actually wound up hugging each other, wishing each other all the very best life could bring, and a broad smile in the knowledge that we were able to "connect" across culture, language, and time. A most cool afternoon, and thought about sharing it with you all, as most of you are just waking up and getting your morning finished. It seems she believes that a feminist (a person who, according to the dictionary, believes in equal rights in society and under the law for both sexes) cannot be "domestic," cannot enjoy cooking and beautifying a home. I guess that is an attitude that many of us have. It's one I've grappled with myself -- how can I be standing up for my rights as a woman while still doing the majority of cooking and cleaning in my own home (which pisses me off partly because I've felt taken advantage of and feel ashamed of myself for allowing it). It's taken me some time to realize that the doing of these things -- creating order and cleanliness and beauty in my surroundings for myself and my loved ones -- providing nourishment -- these are things I have chosen to do, they are not forced on me. They are important to me. Now is that because I am a woman? Maybe. But I should certainly not feel belittled by the choice I have made. And it sure as hell doesn't make me "not" a feminist. Sheesh. I'd like to have a little talk with that Joni. One of the speakers at the McGill colloquium, which is online somewhere, gave a very good talk about Joni and feminism. Apparently the antipathy between Joni and the feminist movement goes way back, and is mutual. The speaker was, very successfully, I think, giving everybody some slack. djp ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 Jul 2005 18:53:34 -0700 (PDT) From: Bob Muller Subject: Re: Joni on Roxana Amed's "Amelia"
