June 28, 2005: 6:31 AM EDT LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Counterculture legend Bob Dylan on Monday became the latest musician to sign up with Starbucks Corp. in an exclusive CD deal that follows the runaway success of a Ray Charles album sold by the coffee maker. "Dylan: Live at the Gaslight 1962," co-released with Sony BMG Custom Marketing Group, will hit Starbucks (Research) coffee shops Aug. 30. It features 10 previously unreleased tracks from performances at New York's Gaslight Cafe over four decades ago, including "A Hard Rains A-Gonna Fall" and "Don't Think Twice It's Alright." Starbucks is moving aggressively into the music scene by selling CDs consumers can't buy elsewhere. The company does not disclose how much CD sales add to profits. One analyst said the music business has been more helpful in driving customer traffic than contributing meaningfully to sales. "I wouldn't say music has been a big driver," JMP Securities analyst Kristine Koerber said. "They are still a coffee retailer, that's their primary focus." Starbucks will carry "Gaslight" exclusively for 18 months, its longest such agreement yet. The CD will cost $13.95 at Starbucks' 4,600 U.S. stores. Dissatisfaction with Top 40-oriented traditional music retailers, particularly among older consumers who are more likely to be Dylan fans, has allowed Starbucks' music business to flourish, company executives said. "That disenfranchised customer is very much a part of the Starbucks customer base," Ken Lombard, president of the chain's entertainment division, said in an interview. He added that the chain is uniquely placed to catch customer interest, as buying coffee at Starbucks has become a part of many consumers' daily routine. Starbucks' biggest music success has been the Grammy-winning Ray Charles CD "Genius Loves Company." Since its release last fall, Starbucks has sold more than 775,000 copies, accounting for 26 percent of its overall U.S. sales, the company said. That success has helped the chain win over other big name artists, such as Alanis Morissette and Joni Mitchell. "That success continues to position us for great projects like the Dylan project and others," Lombard said. It is not the first time Dylan, known for his politically and socially charged lyrics, has partnered with a major corporation to promote his music. Last year, an exclusive compilation CD of his work was sold at lingerie retailer Victoria's Secret, a unit of Limited Brands Inc. (Research) Dylan even appeared in one of the chain's television ads, prompting some critics to say he had sold out. The release of "Gaslight" coincides with the premiere of a documentary film about Dylan's life by director Martin Scorsese called "No Direction Home: Bob Dylan." The chain will also be selling the soundtrack to that film, though not exclusively. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Jun 2005 06:51:55 -0500 From: "Anne Sandstrom" Subject: welcome! Thanks so much for welcoming me to the list. To feel so welcomed is one way of capturing Joni's essence and sharing it collectively as we all feel in her music, her lyrics, her angst, her wonderment and her joy. Mark, what are "perpetual Joni covers"? I just got a copy of Brian Hinton's "Joni Mitchell both sides now" and am having a lovely time reading more about Joni. If I think the Group will enjoy something he wrote about Joni in particular, I'll be sure to share it with you. By the way...I come up as "peep"....long story made short....in 1960 my parents adopted a baby who was born with mid-brain damage, otherwise referred to as Cerebral Palsy. He couldn't pronounce my birth name (Phyllis....hate it) so he came up with Pee-Pee and at my insistence, came up with Peep. My family calls me Peep or Peeper. Friends call me Bo. I feel most comfortable with Bo, I think, although you have a few options so call me what feels right for you. The weather today in glorious New Jersey is hot and sooooo humid. This personalization of the songs and even the life experiences of an artist-celeb such as Joan is a fascinating thing. I have been thinking about it a lot. Like Walt, I also watched the WOHAM DVD just recently, and while I watched and listened I jotted down many phrases and ideas uttered by both those interviewed and Joni herself. This led (inevitably?) to a song, one of the MOST satisfying writing experiences of my life. One of the ideas I attempted to address in the song was the tension of fan-to-artist, in Joni's case, of lover-to beloved. I was struck by how even after all these years Graham Nash described his infatuation so vividly. He said, "she was a goddess." It lead to my imagining how she might have felt about that kind of adoration. She had a lot of lovers and I doubt that many were able to maintain equal footing with her. And I think she did a fair amount of sacrificing romantic love for the demands of her muse (another personal fantasy, perhaps). Here's are two relevant couplets from my song: Easy as a song invites it also waves goodbye I never saw into their souls, I only looked for mine ... Melancholy solo flight, for me it is enough The price for deeper artistry is family and love (I should mention that I had the gall to write this song in the first person, as though it is Joan herself speaking... in itself a relic of my own possessive fanaticism!) I hope to record this soon. I ought not to confess this but I even have the temerity to imagine sharing it with the list.
