I feel that in some ways Kate Bush's album, "Lion Heart" was inspired by many of Joni's songs. I had a thought that I shared with a good friend, and I wanted to share it with this list as well: I could really hear Kate Bush covering, "Shades of Scarlet Conquering." I think it would be beautiful. Any thoughts? What I've learned about life and love and death, and not necessarily in that order is this. Death is final. There's no turning back from it. The sound of a voice silenced through death is deafening. How ironic that I would choose such a word to describe how it feels to no longer hear my friend of spirit MG, and along side Mary Grace, je me souviens my life long friend/brother/spiritwalker Wolf, july19,2004) and my bestbelovedbrother Dave (august 19, 2003). To have my heart and soul compressed beyond recognition as a result of the loss of theythreeinsuchashortperiodoftime....mind/life/soul/heartwrenching. And yet, the love I feel for them lives on and grows each day in the garden of memories I hold close. Death is for learning. What I have learned is that it is of utmost importance to tell those you love, that you love them. In the blink of an eye, in the smashing of a car, in the ripping of a life through the vehicle of cancer, a loved one can disappear long before that reality can register. (and can it ever truly register as a reality)...from this vantage point, I think not. Loss is loss is loss. That wound, that pain lingers on. It shapeshifts, it vanishes from the imminent horizon, only to be thrown at you like a quick knee to the groin, a bolt of lightening to the soul, a clap of thunder hurled through your kitchen window. Resounding. I come to this blessed and sacred space to say that I know, oh how I know that it is never too late to reconcile, to reach out, to hold onto, to cry with, to express those beautiful heart felt, soul wrenching and sometimes corny expressions of love. Tell someone you love, now. Tell them. Dont wait. Tell them, raise your voice to the skyes...tell them how you truly deeply feel about them. Let them know that their life, that "they" in all their essence, matter to you . That the landscape of your life has been forever altered, for the better, because of them. I love MG in a myriad of ways. She and I became friends via our own little creatiion of the Breakfast Club, five years ago, along with another list member (hey mcfadden). It was so much fun, she was so much fun. It amazed me how many common threads we shared throughout the fabric of our lives. Due to the winding road of life, we lost touch for a while, and after that samesaidwhile, I am forever grateful and feel blessed that we found in one another, shelter from the storm. Indeed, we did pick up and write to one another, speaking in hushed tones, our dream of a common language. (thank you adrienne rich for inspired phrase). I learned lessons, samesaidhardcore life lessons that Anne Sandstrom taught me....(Annie, I celebrate your life!!) that it was and IS indeed posssible to live a life courageously, to shake both fists at lightening, in spite of and despite the invasion of cancer in one's body. Mary Grace and I kept in touch for many months after that initial and frightened metoher letter. I recently read again the last letter she wrote to me...she shared details and stories that broke my heart, especially due to the fact that she was deaf, and how that informed the way in which she felt during some of the tests. Lost in a sea of silence. While it may be perceived as sad to know that her life was taken at that crossroads of finding the love of her life, today, one year later, and for years to come, I invite you to I celebrate with me, the happiness she found, the peace of knowing that Jeff adored and loved her with all his heart, with all the unconditional love that informed his love. I feel it is important to look at it this way; I invite you, I dare you, I challenge you see and feel the magnitude the life of Mary Grace, and all the ways her gifts of love poured out onto us, all of us who loved her. And she remains, that wondrous patchwork quilt of a woman, the shape of her life, filled to the brim and beyond, with sweet soulful memories. Let us bring her back to to life with our words, Mary Grace, adored and loved beyond her dying day. And the wind cries Mary. Between the forceps and the stone, Mary Grace was and remains, a 'real' person, a loved, beloved, loving spirit. Sniff. :-( - -Julius ___________ June 12, 2005 Classic Pink Floyd Lineup to Play Live 8 By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Filed at 5:07 p.m. ET LONDON (AP) -- Organizers of the London Live 8 concert said Sunday that the British rock band Pink Floyd would perform with its classic lineup at the July event for the first time in more than two decades. Guitarist David Gilmour, drummer Nick Mason, bass player Roger Waters and keyboard player Richard Wright have not performed on stage together since 1981. The group, which achieved major success with their 1973 album ''Dark Side Of The Moon,'' will join musical acts including Elton John, Madonna, Paul McCartney and Coldplay at the anti-poverty concert in Hyde Park on July 2. ''Like most people I want to do everything I can to persuade the G-8 leaders to make huge commitments to the relief of poverty and increased aid to the third world,'' Gilmour said. ''It's crazy that America gives such a paltry percentage of its GNP to the starving nations.'' Waters, the group's founder, split with the rest of the band after a falling-out in the 1980s. ''Any squabbles Roger and the band have had in the past are so petty in this context, and if re-forming for this concert will help focus attention then it's going to be worthwhile,'' Gilmour said. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 12 Jun 2005 22:43:26 -0400 (EDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: Joni Mitchell and Kate Bush - --- Parts of Yes wrote: > Hello, > > Do people find any similarity between these two > talented artists? I think it would be beautiful. > > Any thoughts? > > Sean > Interesting thought. They do have quite a bit in common. Both of them maintained control over their own production and were allowed to do that by their recording companies (for the most part). I use the past tense because neither has produced anything for quite a while. I hear Kate is going to put something out shortly, but Joni says she's not planning to write any more new music. Both of them are very strong women, in terms of their art and vision, and how they see things coming together; and yet, both also have a very sensitive side. Both produce very visual and dramatic work, although Joni's is more a case of her words creating the picture, whereas with Kate, it's more the drama of her vocal style, and her use of video as an integral part of her songs. Joni was an only child. Kate is the youngest of three, but there is quite a gap between each sibling and her oldest brother is likely about the same age as Joni, give or take a year. But, whereas Joni seemed to rebel and want to get away from her family's control (while still staying close to them in her own way), Kate's family has always been very much a part of her life and her business. Both of their fathers served in the armed forces during WWII. Kate's Mum was a nurse, Joni's a teacher. Kate is a Leo, Joni is a Scorpio. Make of that what you will. I just finished reading a book on Kate Bush, strangely enough. I don't know how good it is, that is how true and accurate it is. It's "Kate Bush - the whole story" by Kerry Juby and was published in 1988. There's no mention in this book of Joni or any possible influence she may have had on Kate. The book mentions music that she likes, but remember, this was 1988. They include Bowie, Killing Joke, Steely Dan, Boomtown Rats, as well as the Beatles and Billie Holliday and others. Joni and Kate have Steely Dan and Billie Holliday in common. They've both done duets with Peter Gabriel. I like your idea of Kate covering, "Shades of Scarlett." It's very dramatic and theatrical and the type of thing that would suit Kate very well. What Kate Bush song would you like Joni to cover? For some reason, I'm hearing "Army Dreamers" in Joni's voice. WOuld have been perfect on "Clouds," no? I could definitley hear "Running up that Hill" on "Dog Eat Dog" (maybe one review of that album should have been called "The Hounds of Love!" heh), and not just because they came out that same year. It just has the same production style and I could hear Joni singing the line, "with no problem" quite beautifully and bitterly. I could defintiley hear "Army Dreamers" on either "Dog Eat Dog" or "Chalk Mark." For some strange reason, I can also hear Joni covering, "Between a Man and Woman," which I could hear mostly on "Night Ride Home." Can't wait to Kate Bush's next album and wish that Joni would consider her music embargo...
