Virgin in Barcelona (qepd) used to have Joni stuff on different floors (jazz rock in the basement, folk upstairs) but at least (being British) they followed a logical alphabetical order. In most record shops in this country the artists are filed by first name, not last name. So you get Jimi, Joni, Jeff, Janis, Johnny, and Joe all in the same section (J), rather than having to go to the 'H', 'M', 'B', 'J', 'C' and 'J' sections individually. There is the obvious downside too. Dylan and Donovan are no longer on speaking terms, Pat Metheny is jammin' with Pat Boone and Pat Benatar, Rufus Wainwright is with Rufus Thomas, not any of the other Wainwrights, etcetera. But I'm used to this now and know where to go, and accept it as the price I pay for living here. What I will never, ever get used to is the fact that publishers here sometimes print the information on the spines of books from top to bottom, and sometime the other way around, meaning that you have to incline your head alternatively to your left and right shoulder around 500 times an hour. In british bookshops you put your head to your right shoulder and scan along the shelves. I can see continuing keeping classical as a separate category as generally speaking one looks under composer there as opposed to conductor or soloist, but otherweise I think they should combine all the catagories. Of course, people like us who buy music by the disc in music stores are dinosaurs -- I do it less and less as time goes by myself -- and it's not clear how much longer disc-type music/entertainment stores will continue to be popular enough to continue justifying superstores the size of Virgin, Tower, et al. I think places like Streetlight, a local chain that deals primarily in used CDs, LPs, 45s, DVDs and a really wonderful store called Medium Rare, which caters to a niche clientele -- in this case, people with a camp sense of humor -- are a good idea and will hopefully continue to exist for some time to come.
