Bob Muller said: <> That's always bugged me, too, and of course it bugs her no end. My take on it is that "folk" in narrow sense would refer to the PP&M-type singers and groups who really sang primarily songs handed down from generation. When people like Dylan and Joni came around who (initially) sang their *own-penned* songs accompanied only by guitar, reviewers said, Hmmm. It's not traditional-folk, and it's certainly not country-western, what the hell, let's call it folk-style, folk for short. It's easier to say than Confessional Singer-Songwriter in a Variety of Genres. More generally, it bugs me that in this day and age performers are still pegged by whatever "category" they started out in. Try figuring out where Joni belongs, or Queen Latifah, or Dionne Warwick -- Dionne I've found under R&B, Pop Vocalist, Easy Listening, Rock... With all the computerization at Virgin records, they can tell you *whether* a given CD or DVD is in the store but not where *in* the store!!! Sometimes the staff can make up for these peculiarities, but if you find yourself with a college kid who says essentially "Joni Who?" or "Dionne Who?", you're essentially on your own. And especially when they've labelled one cd of T'log as 'Easy-listening' and the other as 'Jazz'... good thing you can't have one without the other or they will really be in a muddle! Yes, the 'folksinger' tag never really sold it for me with Joni as to me folksingers we're ALWAYS on guitar (mainly because it has to be a portable instrument like a lute or a flute or pan-pipes but you get my drift) and the first Joni song I heard back in '87 was a small passage from 'Rainy Night House' which was piano, I was only 15, I didn't know what the hell it was, was it jazz, was it rock, was it a wonderful woman who was singing her heart out... It does make looking a lot easier. All you gots to do is find the letter the person's name starts with. That Various Artists sure is prolific though! I'll be the dissenter and say I count Joni as a folksinger--early Joni anyway, not in the folkloric sense, but in the "folk scare" sense. One thing she isn't, however, is "easy listening"--even with the sometimes MOR feel of TLOG. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-joni@smoe.org [mailto:owner-joni@smoe.org] On Behalf Of littlebreen@comcast.net Sent: Friday, June 03, 2005 10:53 AM To: Jamie Zubairi Cc: joni@smoe.org Subject: Re: To Folk Or Not To Folk... <> Good heavens -- where have you seen this done? Yes, troublemakers like Joni definitely cause a problem when they don't conform and fit into a niche. I've seen BSN (the 2000 release) classified as folk and rock, and many of her records as well described in a way that's pretty laughable. While this may or not be true (I would support your thesis), the VAST majority of covers of her work coming out now are jazz vocalists and musicians, with the balance being pop covers by artists like Mandy Moore & Sheryl Crow. I think Joni would really be happy to see that the jazz world has embraced her compositions moreso than any other genre.
