Maybe y'all remember the infamous Boopsie in my department...the Joni-Basher who ran from my office with her hands over her ears when I broke into Joni song once (okay, maybe twice, or, you know.....). The one who says she goes "epileptic" (Julius corrected that to "apopletic") when she hears Joni's voice ("the Abu Ghraib of my mind".) This chick is twisted, for sure. Does she speak in sorry sentences or WHAT???? She seemed to be getting worse....a few weeks ago she called me a "Joni Mitchell terrorist". And more recently, she said "You are like a Jesus freak, only in a worse way." I like to think this is all in good fun, but sometimes I wonder. When I try to gently school her in Joni's genius she just sniffs, patrician nose up in the air, and sneers: "I don't listen to POPULAR music." Harrumph! Christ, ya know it ain't easy being a Jonievangelist sometimes! I wish she had more sense of humor, keeping her Joni disdain at bay, but it just wasn't happening. Sigh. Bree, a few months ago you wrote me this: - ---------- Dear Patti.. I think Boopsie is a closet Joni listener....don't be surprised to find that out some day. She'll let a joni verse slip or an accidental hummmmmmmm of a Joni tune. I'm sure of it!! Anyway...thanks for the good laugh this day. Love.. Bree - --------- Well, dear Bree, I'm sorry I never answered you. I just thought you were totally off your rocker...that Boopsie would NEVER EVER "get" our broader sensibility. I didn't want to tell you you were crazy, so I just let it slide. But soft! What Joni light through yonder window breaks? It is the wicked anti-Joni witch of the east, and Joni is the sun! Boopsie starts to get Our Lady, oh, she starts to get our love! The day I had to give that speech, when I needed your confidence babies (and wow, did you ever deliver! Thank you again!), a miracle happened! Miraculous repentances -- I can't *believe* her! Boopsie sent me an e-card that said: "Dear Patti: I come for conversation You comfort me sometimes Comfort and consultation I know that's what I'll find When I come to see you But it seems that something is missing here Where are the grapes and cheeses? You are the best, even if you are a Joni fanatic. Happy day, and good luck with your speech. Love, the infamous Boopsie" Can you * believe * it ? That one really brought tears to my eyes, and taught me *never* to say "never" again. Hope, and Joni, springs eternal. Magatunes, a very big and hip music store on Whyte Ave, reports that Soap Girl is No.2 on their sales chart for this week ! See for yourself at http://www.megatunes.com/main2.htm Not only that, but Martha and Mary Gauthier, both of whom have been discussed recently on this list, are also in the current top 5! I went in to check things out. They have a huge Joni promo rack in the store, with several of Joni's cd's on display. They also had a cool, oversized framed poster of the DJDR album cover art on the wall. Too bad it was their only copy! So the Joni vibe is alive and well in Edmonton. Just thought you'd like to know.
