Lol; i do love this. Didn't Joni recent;y say something about being slightly embarrassed by some of herrr early song writing, something liek "i even know where i rhymed jewels with schools". Maybe it was that CTV video. One of my favourite song rhymes is Blondie rhyming Maria with "see her", lol, that gives me a laugh every time. I think it's insipid and melodramatic, in case you wondered. The jauntier NRH version is way more powerful--Joni understood irony then. " I like both versions. But I prefer the Tlog version. Joni has commented in interviews that she has often felt a need to lighten up the musical presentation of some of her extremely "heavy" songs. The original CL is a good example of that, IMO. I do not really think that irony was her point, rather than relief from direct confrontation with the scenes depicted. I find the direct, dramatic presentation of TLog more moving and powerful - if you can let go and take the emotional heat straight on. Perhaps some people find that hard to do - like looking at a really excruciating sitcom scene, where you just have to turn away. Bob Muller (I think on one of his Sweet 16 compilations) included a Latin type cover that was far bouncier than the NRH version - I really like that version, too. CL is a good song, musically - it can weather a variety of presentations successfully. Her top ten of all time (in no particular order): 1. River, by Joni Mitchell 2. The Valley, by Jane Siberry 3. Why? by Annie Lennox 4. Mercy Street, by Peter Gabriel 5. If I laugh, by Cat Stevens 6. I eat dinner, by Kate and Anna McGarrigle 7. Ol' 55, by Tom Waits 8. Secret Heart, by Ron Sexsmith 9. Beautiful Day, by U2 10. It's almost as if I was to tell someone a secret, and then see it on the front page the next day...No...this should be quiet, not symphonic fer crissakes. Perhaps a quartet or a lone cello or something would have worked, but why? The NRH version got the job done." I have criticized the orchestral treatment (i.e., inclusion) of certain songs on TLog (especially For The Roses and The Circle Game), on the grounds that the content is not worthy of orchestral treatment - these are essentially personal but somewhat universal vignettes of everyday joy, or complaint, and were much better treated IMO via the simple, intimate presentations of the originals. However, CL deals with an important, 'heavy' issue, one that relatively few of us have experienced directly but that most of us are affected by at least indirectly, and the melancholy of the song is IMO powerfully captured in the orchestral presentation. It is a dirty, intimate little secret that needs its time on the front page artistically - and Joni did two ways. I did not find it particularly heavy handed, either - it's not like it was given a tympanic treatment, like JOTMAS or Slouching. A pretty quiet, sad arrangement, really. That said, I agree that it might have been better with fewer instruments - a la mode of some of the arrangements on Judy Collins' Wildflowers. Finally, she takes John's advice and puts some fiddles on it, and look what she gets around here ! There I go, sticking up for Joni again..:-) Bobsart (a bigger fan of TLog with each listening) ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2005 #132 ********************************* ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:onlyjoni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
