What I don't *get* is if the whole "biz" is so rotten, why is Joni so attached to LA where she lives? Just seems it would reek constantly of the industry, much to her presumable nausea. I think there's 2 sides to that coin. She may find the "industry" rotten...but I think she's attracted to it too, somehow. So, for me, it makes it hard to take it seriously when she says these things. Especially in light of the fact that there is REALLY great music being put out on smaller, alternative labels. REALLY good music! As good as music's ever been, imho! I think its a sort of cop out to give that as an excuse. Sure the industry sucks - so don't be PART of the mainstream industry! Go underground! or at least "alternative"! I think she just ain't in the mood anymore. Which is fine, but why not just say what the truth really is. ok, thats all... It does. Is it just me, or does it sound like a crock? Either someone is making stuff up, or misquoting Joan, or taking her out of context, or maybe she has either lost it, or is seriously living in the past - whaddya think, everyone? If she couldn't find a lover that measured up, why did it take her 30 or more years to figure this out, and how come she hasn't been celibate since then, rather than for the last however-long-it-has-been? Is this kind of like being a born-again virgin? How long does a person have to be celibate to be considered a born-again virgin? I guess I've run out of patience, but it sounds like either whining or tabloid stuff. How long can a person pine for the old boyfriend? If it was so great, how come it didn't last? and yadda yadda yadda. If she really feels this way, she should take a long hard look at what it was they had, why they broke up and so on, and then maybe realize, that it all happened for a reason. Or maybe she should listen to Piaf singing, "Je ne regrette rien." I'm giving Joan the benefit of the doubt, because it just sounds too stupid to be for real. Maybe it was meant as a joke, but it comes off as kind of embarassing. Is it just me? Julius, this most certainly isn't aimed at you! I think it's just a bad still lifted from the video clip. When you see the whole clip on TV, Joni's face looks paler, but also more luminous and softer than the somewhat haggard face we see on the website photo. We can see that the skin around her neck, jawline and mouth is a little loose, as one might expect to see on a person over 60. If we could only all look that good at 61. CTV could have chosen a more flattering image. Goodness knows, we've all seen horrible photos of ourselves. IMO, this is simply a bad photo. http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/1114455404208_109864604/?hub=CanadaAM Michael in Quebec _________________________________________________________________ Take advantage of powerful junk e-mail filters built on patented Microsoft. Musically I thought it sounded like very dated mid 70's jazz, which is to say like TV background music. I would venture to say that what makes Court & Spark so special and magical (and yes it is very much both of those and more) is the musical vision and leadership of Joni. But it looks like it's not so bad - here's the review of the record from allmusic.com: "Despite the absence of Joe Sample and Larry Carlton, Scott's L.A. Express remains very Crusaders-influenced on Tom Cat a highly accessible jazz/funk/R&B date that, as commercial as it is, leaves room for inspired, blowing courtesy of both the leader and sidemen like electric guitarist Robben Ford and keyboardist Larry Nash. Sweaty, hard-hitting jazz-funk is the rule on such down-home grooves as "Good Evening Mr. & Mrs. America and All the Ships" and "Day Way," which allow the players to let loose, blow and say what needs to be said. "Love Poem" is a pleasant, likable piece of delicate mood music (but not "muzak"!) that features wordless vocals by pop/folk singer Joni Mitchell and has a slightly Flora Purim-ish appeal. Unfortunately, a CD as good as Tom Cat serves as a reminder of how dreadfully unimaginative most of Scott's GRP albums would be." I remember them opening for Joni on the tour that became MOA- they came out sans Joni and played 25 minutes of blistering fusion- then our diva came onstage (first song: a rocking "This Flight Tonight") and the Berkeley crowd went nuts. If we got bonus video from Joni this year, I fear we'd get an insightful 30 minute lecture in 3 parts: Part 1: The 4 races, Part 2: That Incredible Medicine Wheel Part 3: What a Fascinating Prophet Chief Seattle was... Seriously, here's my vision of a Dual Disc from Joni: 1. CD side: the first Carnegie Hall show. 2. DVD side: a.) Photo gallery: Joel's best stills from that night. b.) Joni reminisces about that night. Maybe Nash or her manager flesh out those bits in the PBS film for us. c.) the first Carnegie Hall show. I think this the night when people kept shouting out, "We love you, Joni." then Joni says, "Hmmm. Unconditional love! Hmmm-mm-mmnn." I hope I live to see this. I love that woman.
