I'm so happy for you! Being able to tell her how much good she has done! Congrats, boy! ...I'm very happy, too, hearing about that's she's considering recording with a jazz trio! I'm certain the girl can swing, and in this intimate format it will be easier to achieve an outstanding performance (rather than with a full orchestra, which it didn't work *for me*) Maybe, if she puts herself in it, she will be tempted to play piano again, don't you think? ...and maybe she will discover some new song longing to be born, indeed. I'd figure that the bassist would be Mr. Larry Klein, of course! That's all from me by now: Many thanks for telling us about it, Rich! Have a Wonderful time! I can't wait to hear more personal stories! Joni Mitchell calls for greater environmental awareness SAN FRANCISCO Singer-songwriter and environmentalist Joni Mitchell says education may be one way to help rebalance nature. Mitchell says clear-cutting of trees as the world's population soars is causing an ecological imbalance. She also spoke out against uranium mining for nuclear weapons and overuse of sonar which some say is a cause of whale beachings and other, similar incidents. Mitchell says that to be a nature lover right now is to be in "terrible pain." She says many things are going wrong while others seem to be uncorrectable. Mitchell gave an Earth Day speech yesterday to San Francisco's Commonwealth club. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Deb Messling -^..^- messling@enter.net - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 23 Apr 2005 04:22:14 -0700 (PDT) From: Bob Muller Subject: RE: well, a dream finally came true Thanks Rich for your report; I'm especially glad that you got in your hugs, kisses, words, and tears. I'm very happy for you and also to hear the news of Joni's jonesing to make more music - and it sounds like someone with her ear has been sittin' in on the JMDL! We've talked on more than one occasion about her singing with a jazz trio (what BSN SHOULD have been). And a musical question...of course Brian Blade would be drummer extraordinaire in this trio, and you mentioned Lyle Mays...hopefully the bass would be a stand-up acoustic in lieu of an electric - is it automatic that if you play electric bass that you can play a stand-up too? I've never seen Klein play anything but an electric. First she goes 3 hours w/no smokes, and then talks of recording with a jazz trio? Sounds like Dreamland! He says, "I love her!" and I said, "I love her too!" How cool is THAT??!!! Don't you just love that sublime moment when you meet someone new and that happens? That's how I met my best friend in 1975 -- and you know how much less there was of Joni's oeuvre out there at that time, compared to now. And more recently, when I met a new, ummm, friend (he's a real good talker, I THINK he's a friend), and I said something about sharing "MY Joni" (when I sent him the JT/JM video "You are the Only One" that Jamie Zoob shared w/ us) and he replied: "YOUR Joni??? -- I don't think so!" And so it began. Those are rare and magical moments in our own private circle games, when ya gotta grab the brass ring and hold tight and hang on for dear life...and love. You also said: "I think the coolest thing about life right now is being able to connect with other musicians. it is a dream come true. I thought of that sign at the Hard Rock Cafe in Beverly Hills shopping center that has two statistic in lights-one is the human population of Earth, the other is the size, in acres, of the Amazon Rain Forest. The first is going up as you watch it, the second going down. Constantly, all the time, 24 hours a day. Joni has surely seen this many times, as it is visible from anywhere in that intersection, and not far from her home. Anyway, good to hear her mention two big disasters that need attention. Bob Muller wrote: > - is it automatic that if you play electric bass that you can play a stand-up > too? No. A bull fiddle is fretless, so takes much more finesse to get the tones right. Most electric players could probably fake it; playing it well is another matter. Plus, bow technique is part of the deal. I'd say it's easier for a guitar player to play electric bass, than for an e. bassist to play a stand-up.
