Hi, Julius and everybody,
I originally wrote a slight parody/tribute to Joni based (with actually little change of lyric) on Steely Dan's "Janie Runaway":

Hi gang,
Well, I was listening to Steely Dan's "Two Against Nature" album again,
trying to get the complex rhythms and key changes by following the songs with
the sheet music I just got, when it really struck me for the first time how
perfectly their (as usual, slightly creepy) "Jany Runaway" could be reworked,
with really just a few word changes, to suit early Joni. Here Goes:
Joni Hideaway
It must have been that ukulele
That someone gave to thee
After C. Mitchell gave your name fire
You hopped a bus for NYC
Up in Toronto the future looked cold, with no frillage
Now you're the wonderwaif of Chelsea, the Village [snip]

That's great fun to read, walt. I'm not into SD much, but I'm a bit of
a poetry and lyrics buff and I can't stop smiling at your "wonderwaif"
coinage. It works nicely, and that's what one's poetic license is for.
"Frillage" doesn't quite cut muster though, in my humble. :-) How
'bout something about "oil spillage" on that line instead,
foreshadowing her future "Sex Kills"?
Or not. Thanks for the sharing your wonderful wit, walt.
- -Julius
Hey, Julius!
Shadowing "Sex Kills" indeed. Notice in my version, I did NOT change the line about "Who makes the traffic interesting?", which of course tempted me to put something in about "just ice" -- and absolutely, "oil spillage" came to mind (it ain't that easy to rhyme with "village", which is what I was aiming for -- the original line says "Now you're the wonderwaif of Gramercy Park" -- which means I can't take credit for "wonderwaif" either!
Anyway, to restrict myself, I tried to adhere to their rhyme schemes as much as possible, and I also restricted myself to "early" Joni, hence the references to JT, Crosby, Mama Cass, pianos in Spain and dulcimers in Greece.
Um, I'm also working on a rewording of "Gaslighting Abby", also from SD's "Two Against Nature" that's a gentle prodding of the *current* Joni to get back to work. I'm thinking of calling it "Goosing Our Joni", and changing the theme of the original song (which is an updating of the movie "Gaslight", in which a rotten guy and his girlfriend conspire to drive the man's wife mad so he can get rid of her and have the new chick, in case you're not familiar) to teasing Joni (**very gently** of course) and suggesting new ideas (among which, the ones I cited a week or so ago, about a two-CD set for her grandkids, one CD of her songs that have for better or worse becdome kiddie classics -- and maybe some new ones -- and the other CD containing her four or so Christmas songs -- Magi, River, Chinese Cafe and Facelift, perhaps others -- Winter Lady? -- plus any Christmas carols she'd like to add, or even new Christmas songs penned by herself, or Jane Siberry or Michael Franks, or...). The double CD would be a special edition with lots of artwork -- maybe larger than the usual jewel case, and maybe containing poster-sized reproductions of one or more of the best art (the pic of her and Kilauren and the kids floating above Paris comes to mind).
Speaking of which, w/r/t "Goosing Our Joni", I'd love any suggestions for gentle humor or other novel suggestions that I could incorporate into "Goosing..."
Anyone who's interested and doesn't have "Two Against Nature" and would like to see the original lyrics to get a feel for the original song, contact me off-list!
Thanks, Julius and all,
Walt

Good call, Jamie. Frank, at the top of the jmdl page,
click on "Library". Scroll to the "Text Search" box that Les built.
Start with the word "corrupt", which yields 37 hits. Next try
"cesspool", which yields 20 hits. For a smaller result set, you could
start with "corrupt cesspool" which gives 2 hits. I wish I was kidding.

I'm not sure I agree with Todd's possession of a half dozen crackers; I will
however attest to the fact that "Something/Anything?" is a masterpiece.("A
Wizard A True Star"ain't far behind!) ...and hey,"Astral Weeks"would offer
some stiff competition. May I also offer up: The Beatle's "Abbey Road", Emmylou
Harris' "Wrecking Ball" or "Stumble Into Grace", Jane Siberry's "When I Was A
Boy", Rosanne Cash's "Rules of Travel",Loreena Mckennit's "The Mask and The
Mirror", And Cassandra Wilson's "belly of the sun"; all masterpieces in their
own right. I could go on but... the garden calls, I must answer.
Jonily yours,
Warren Keith

Shawn IS wonderful live! Not only is it a pleasure to hear her play
and sing, but she's very funny and involves her audience as much as
possible.
I've seen Shawn in Houston (1993? with a band), Austin (1994 or 1995;
1st row, with Stuart Smith on lead guitar and Larry Klein on acoustic
bass), San Antonio (1998; solo), and most recently in Elmer, NJ (2004;
also solo). I think my favorite was the Austin show; it was the last
show of her tour that year, and she was home in Austin (where she
lives).
As for albums, I still believe "Steady On" to be her finest work.

Hello All
From Jazz Fest New Orleans. Sorry I have not had a chance to catch up on the
list and I am dying to know the reports from DC and Sherelle9s performance.
I did get this link from my sister and felt compelled to share it with you
all especially since it involves alternate tunings. And I thought Joan was
amazing...

Subject: Joni Mitchell coming home for Centennial
C CBC News April 20, 2005
REGINA - The woman viewed by many as Saskatchewan's most famous musician
will be attending the big-budget Centennial gala in Saskatoon next month.
But singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell - who was born in Alberta but grew up in
Saskatoon - is not expected to perform.
Lieutenant-Governor Lynda Haverstock said it took hours of personal phone
conversations to get Mitchell to simply attend.
"What I did was to make the case that this event is not about any one
individual, that this event is about the people of Saskatchewan, people like
her parents," Haverstock said.
"When it became not about her, she was very interested in being here."
Mitchell, once best known for hit songs like Big Yellow Taxi, has
essentially retired from performing and in recent years has focused her
creative energies on her paintings. She's been inducted into the Rock and
Roll Hall of Fame and has received the Order of Canada.
Haverstock also announced that Saskatchewan comedian Brent Butt will emcee
the gala and CBC Television will broadcast the event across its network.
The arena show has a budget of $2.5 million.
The CBC broadcast will be live to Eastern Canada and tape-delayed for
viewers in Saskatchewan. It will air locally at 8 p.m. central time.
About half of the tickets to the May 19 show have been sold.
