Our paths crossed only once - but it was a night I'll never forget. It was my first night on the 2001 Folktrain (which I boarded at Winnipeg) on the way to the Vancouver FA - - and, appropriately, my first encounter with Rachel was at an impromtu Jonifest which started sometime after midnight as the train pulled out of Saskatoon - a bunch of us sharing Joni songs - hollering "Saskatooooon! after each one as the train trundled on across the snow-covered Saskatchewan prairie. Rachel (if my memory serves me well) sang a wonderful version of 'Tin Angel' amongst others, and was one of the few diehards, along with myself and Gregg Cagno, who stayed on long after most had gone to bed. I clearly remember her also singing a great song called 'Blue Norther' by a friend of hers, Louise Taylor. For some bizarre reason, he is listening to Joni's version of You're So Square (Baby I Don't Care)!!!! Along with stuff by such noted Bushhaters as John Fogerty!! Apparently, his media strategist downloaded the songs for him (no surprise there). On a quick search in amazon this evening I've just discovered that Joni has written a book on parenting called 'Parenting Today: How To Raise Your Child In Todays Turbulent Times' Go see for yourself: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0595344283/qid%3D1113335725/sr%3D11-1/ref%3Dsr%5F11%5F1/103-0631367-2003818 Anybody have toddlers who might fancy buying this book to see if it's OUR Joni Mitchell or some British author... The phrase 'turbulent times' is just a little too close to be anyone but Joni (in theme anyway) but I mean, please?!?!?! Is she an authority on parenting now? Is it just because of her GranMa Status that she can qualify this? Imagine.... It's not a bad combination, with 31 songs, with at least one entry from every album from STAS to WTRF *except* none from Mingus. The original piano/vocal/guitar transcriptions are used from the original books for each album, so they vary accordingly. Let me know if you want a complete listing of the contents... Nah, it's not our Joni. The author biography on the publisher's web site (it's a self-publishing company) says: Joni Mitchell is a professional freelance writer who has developed unique skills, ideas, and strategies for raising children. As an experienced mother she has developed a strong skill base from which she has been able to help parents struggling with the challenges of raising children, stepchildren, or grandchildren. The URL for the link to the biography includes the phrase "penname=joni+mitchell." Interesting that the word turbulent is in the subtitle; she is either trying to cash in on the confusion, or is oblivious. Another interesting link: http://www.christianitytoday.com/music/glimpses/2003/onlywithlaughtercanyouwin.html Part of the "Glimpses of God" series of articles, a singer named Rosie Thomas has a CD called "Only With Laughter Can You Win" (sic). You might expect "Roses Blue" to be on it, but it isn't, however she cites Joni is her main influence, and one of her songs in the article is described as being in Joni's style. No doubt she takes solace in Joni's lines about the girl who's 'gotten into zodiac and Zen' from 36 or so years ago. I want to write to her and tell her that Joni herself later identified with astrology (Don Juan's Restless Daughter) and now calls herself a Buddhist, but I won't.
