(That's where I got the Mormons dominating heaven joke, it was in the episode.) The South Park guys have done this before -- they arranged for a very quick edit for an episode that was a parody of The Wizard of Oz, with Canada, which they continually poke fun at, as Oz, and with Saddam Hussein, the on-and-off lover of Satan, as the new Wizard... Anyway, they inserted details of his capture in the spidey-hole, from a day or so before the episode aired, at the last moment. I'm an enormous fan of South Park, which is frequently shocking, but astonishingly good social satire, and surprisingly morally centered -- the closest thing we have right now to, say, All In The Family from thirty years ago. (Norman Lear is a fan of the show, and is sort of an unoffcial adviser to Parker and Stone, the creators of SP.) I've been reading a lot of editorials about both Terry Schiavo and JPII, and two things have struck me: (1) the most vociferously self-promoting whackjobs who interfered with the TS case seem most interested in two populations: embryos and people in a persistent vegetative state, in other words, people *before* and *after* they have brains -- the pre- and post-cerebellic; presumably, they consider the brain-free a potential voting block; and (2) in that same vein, as this country seems to be slowly but surely turning into a theocracy, I haven't seen *anyone* commenting on the fact that the president ordered flags to half-staff in honor of the Pope's passing. I suppose there's no real harm in it, but are there rules, or guidelines, or is it utterly up to His Shrubbery? Would anyone object or find it odd if he ordered flags at half-mast at the death of, say, Russia's President Putin? -- or another religious figure? (JPII was technically both a head of state and a religious leader, and I'll say this for Bush -- he was respectful to JP2, at least in public, in spite of JP's publicly reading W's beads on more than one occasion.) Just wondering what anyone else thought, or whether anyone knows if there are guidelines... (Full disclosure, in case it isn't obvious -- NOT a big fan of JP2's for reasons too numerous to go into, and it irritates the hell out of me that I have to go to PBS or BBC or Journal -- an English-language news broadcast out of Germany available on PBS and many cable outlets -- to get *real* news while all of the "network" news is about such non-news-nonsense as Terry Schiavo's death, JP2's death, and the Michael Jackson trial. I'm willing to bet that 99% of Americans are not aware that there was an election in Zimbabwe this week.) Not as pissed off as I sound, more depressed, really, fondly, Walt - -- Let the walls go tumbling down Falling on the ground And all the dogs go running free The wild and gentle dogs Kenneled in me ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 03 Apr 2005 08:54:43 +0000 From: LittleBreen@comcast.net Subject: [none] Catherine asked: <> and David said: <> What happened was a couple of years ago, they did actually kill Kenny off "for real" when they figured there was too much focus on that one gag, and they "tried out" a host of secondary or new characters to complete the quartet, including the sweetly naive Butters, the very nervous Tweak, and not one but two differently abled characheters, Timmy, who gets around in a wheelchair and can only say his name, and Jimmy, who gets around on braces and is a budding standup comedian with a stammer. No one was quite right for the job, and ultimately, Kenny reappeared. For the uninitiated, Kenny's voice is utterly muffled by the hood of his parka, but you can almost always understand what he's saying via context and intonation. He's been to hell at least once, where he advised Satan on a relationship problem the latter was having, and to heaven more than once, but usually his post-mortem destination is left to the imagination. I could never make this stuff up. I was able to get the CD (not very easily either, I'll add) and although it sounded really strange at first (Carol's voice is very low and much different from Joni's) I have warmed up to it. Carol also turns in a Tom Waits cover (New Coat Of Paint) as well as original material and covers of John Lennon, Randy Newman, Nick Cave, Ron Sexsmith, Sandy Denny songs among others. Eccentric choices. What was coincidental is that shortly after I received the CD, I stumbled upon the 2nd 2GR cover by Ellen Metzger; so hopefully more to come. I don't know about that, but I do remember that when the media were first questioning them about Chelsea's name they said that she was named after a Judy Collins song, so I think we can assume they're not big Joni fans. - --Smurf Tired of spam? But, as Smurf said, I believe they were familiar with Judy Collins' version at the time and not Joni's. The song "Chelsea Morning" according to Joni's comments on the "Second Fret Sets" was written during the time Joni lived in the Chelsea district of New York City. Hi Bob, Thanks for the update on the covers. I have a live CD of Carol Grimes with pianist Janette Mason and I must say that Carol Grimes' voice can soar powerfully, croon softly and hit a high note very quietly in the manner of Janiece Jaffe and Rita Moreno. I first heard her doing a duet with Ian Shaw in the Shaw's tribute album to the lyrics of Lorenz Hart. Shaw himself did an extended version of "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" in his own live album. Bob, I haven't checked your listing yet in Joni Undercover but I dont know if I told you that I have a version of "Goodbye PorkPie Hat" from jazz vocalist Jay Clayton. Clayton, like the late Betty Carter uses the song for vocal improvisations rather than as an homage to lyrics. I had trouble subscribing to JMDL this 2005 but hopefully with a yahoo account as my gateway rather than my school email, I will enjoy the always fruitful conversations in this List. And hard to believe when I realized that I am now in my last semester of taking academic courses when I thought that it wasn't that long ago when I came here in NC to commence my doctoral studies.
