Bill< I understand your point but that is not what I meant by my reference to judging others- no time now to get into the philosophy but my statement was just a reflection on how I see my own self changing over time... ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 1 Apr 2005 15:50:26 -0800 (PST) From: Bob Muller Subject: Joni Covers, Volume 63 - DNR- Happy April Fools day everyone! And yes, as we rip another page off the ol' Ridgid Tool calendar, we also unveil another CD's worth of Joni covers...Joni's trying her best to catch up to me with her own compilations but I'm way ahead - and no sign of a vegetative state with this project...these puppies keep coming along as fast as I can round them up, so you can hang the "DNR" sign up, but in this case it means DO NOT REMOVE (from your CD player). And as is usually the case I had a lil' help, so a BIG BIG gracias a mis amigos Jerry Notaro & Paul Maggio. And here's what we came up with this time: 1. Richie Havens - Woodstock: Hey, I don't have to say much about Richie, y'all know him and he was the opener for Woodstock so this was an appropriate choice. A great track. 2. The Harvard-Radcliffe Callbacks - The Circle Game: More college acapella, they just love our Joni and most of them do a nice job, including this bunch. 3. Susan Egan - Both Sides Now: A 2004 release from a fine Broadway/Cabaret singer, very spirited & energetic. 4. k.d. lang - A Case Of You: 5. k.d. lang - Jericho: Not a lot more to say about these two as they've been bantered on at length in this forum. Jericho is my favorite of the two, but both are wonderful. Thanks to Mark in Seattle I can appreciate her "go with it, stay with it" lyric twist but I still find it superfluous and distracting. In any event, I will gladly take as many Joni covers as Ms. Lang cares to dish. 6. Bob Applegate - Big Yellow Taxi: A nice guitar-mandolin version with a simple vocal, has a Jonifest feel to it. 7. Randy Cannon - Both Sides Now: Wow, this track is superb, and I'm sure that I can't do it justice with mere verbage. Solo Piano in a Fred Hersch-like vein. The arrangement and chord structure are totally unique, these are all weird augmented minor chords or something, anyway it gives the song such a haunted and sinister sort of feel in places, and it's mostly in 3/4 time so it's like a devlish carousel-like waltz. Wow is all I can say, it's tracks like this one that keep my Covers-heart a-pounding. 8. Ted Kent & Canadian Spaghetti - I Don't Care: Yuck. I hate to follow such a wonderful track with a loser like this one, another half-assed Elvis impersonator, with a band that falls in & out of rhythm. This spaghetti is limp. 9. Janice McHenry - The Circle Game: Way back in 1973, the youth choir at St. Jerome's Parish thought it would be great to have their annual youth musical production recorded and issued on LP. And I'm glad they did...14-year-old Janice is certainly no pro and you can hear a little nervousness in her voice, but to hear a youthful voice on this particular track is kinda cool, but then again I'm just a sentimental April fool. 10. Restless Wind - Cactus Tree: 11. Restless Wind - Both Sides Now: 12. Restless Wind - Conversation: 13. Restless Wind - Morning Morgantown: Restless Wind is a guitar trio based in San Antonio, these are all very Joni-like arrangements and playing, which is to say that they're very nice. It would be nice to hear some 90's stuff too, but these oldies are closer to a lot of boomers' hearts I suppose. 14. Chief Noda - Goodbye Pork Pie Hat: A pretty flat-picked acoustic guitar version a la Michael Hedges. 15. Aoife Ni Fhearraigh - Both Sides Now: Celtic pop singer with a solid voice and pianos, harps and synths in the backgrounds. 16. Tom Baxter - A Case Of You: Another lovely cover of ACOY, Tom's voice is a wispy, gentle whisper of a voice which suits this song and easily transitions to a falsetto. Towards the end of the song he gets a little too over-dramatic & starts scrambling his pronouns a bit and ends up with "you can drink a case of her" so you don't really know who's drinking a case of who. 17. Marti Pellow - River: Marti Pellow (the Scottish vocalist who was in Wet Wet Wet) sang this one on the air and we got that recording eons ago. He also turned in this fine studio version, again really dramatic but I like his take on it - even with the corny "she lights up my life" ending. 18. Lukas Sunny Solace - Woodstock: Another ripoff of the Matthews Southern Comfort cover, except for they sing "Gasgur's Farm" so it must have been a whole different Woodstock! 19. Steve Lonsdale - Both Sides Now: And what better to top off a feast like this one but a nice slice of cheese...Steve sounds a lot like Tom Jones, and we'll just leave it at that. And there you go...19 more slabs of Joni cover joy - if you're interested in a copy let me know, and stay tuned for a giveaway - haven't done one in a while so I'm ready to fling a frisbee freebie. And whatever you do, don't pull that feeding tube yet - the Covers Project is alive and well! Bob NP: Jill Scott, "Untitled Track" Yahoo!
