It makes the whole thing interactive or multisensory (you hear the music and the sung words, you look at the pictures, you read the words and conjure up images in your head). You can read it to yourself while the orchestral interlude is playing. In a strange way, I think it helps you recognize that it's not just the words in the song, but the way of life, that is missing.
