My eyes can hardly believe it!!! Welcome, welcome back! My mind is going back to a place where all things were Joni and we posted hoping against hope that she would read our posts be touched beyond words and decide to perform again. Memories of attending her concerts in the 70's and 80's were shared with those of us who had never (and still have never) attended one of her concerts. It was all we had at the time. Phyliss, it is so good to see you one the list!!!! Sherelle Phyliss wrote: Sounds like a perfect opportunity to delurk. I'm BaaaaaAAAck! Our move to NC is complete and we are relatively settled so I've been in lurk mode for a few weeks. Glad to see most of the same old crew around. Hello! And hey, I finally move to the right coast and joni-fest gets moved further away. What's up with that? ;-) for the JC... We're getting to know some new neighbors and had a few over for dinner recently. While touring the house they saw (one of) my Joni shrines...4 signed lithos framed large and hung in the stairwell. One proceeded to tell me how she never really cared for Joni that much but recently purchased her "jazz" album (BSN) and just LOVES her voice and singing NOW. For once, someone not lamenting about how she's lost it. I thought it was the best show in years. It was cool that the winner's name was printed in Braille, so that Stevie Wonder could read it. Fantastic that Green Day won for American Idiot, the best and bravest political album to come along in a while. And I loved that Melissa Etheridge performed with her bald head. It was heartwarming to see that she's making the best of this dreadful situation. What an inspiration! (And her Joplin was good too!). A lot of good performances (Gwen Stefani & Eve, Tim McGraw, Green Day), but I thought two were phenomenal - Alicia Keyes and Jamie Fox (They should do an album together)- and that Southern Rock salute with Skynard, Allman Brothers, Keith Urban, Elvin Bishop, etc. . . . That was f*****g incredible, especially for a Louisiana boy who grew up in the 70's!! AMAZING, the whole group!! Then last night I was stuck in my car all night, trying to get onto a ferry that wouldn't sail because of one technical problem after another, and out of sheer boredom I started this list, saw in no time at all that my total was hovering around 50, so decided this was it: I was playing after all! So here with a dull head, trying to do some work but failing miserably after literally zippo sleep, am I typing out my list. In some cases (Joni, Steely Dan, Dylan etc - YESSSS Dylan, to assert my position in that debate too!) I just chose one song out of dozens of songs of theirs that I love. Other songs are strictly one-offs, I may not like the singer for anything but that song. And with some of them I hold my breath for "what that's saying about me", because they are so obvious, e.g. the singer or band's biggest hit, but I must be honest, I really love them (like Stairway to Heaven, which I remember hearing for the first time like a mystic experience, and introducing friends to in trance-like sessions) so the hell with you cynics. Several songs have already been mentioned in other lists, but I swear they were my own independent choice. Right, here goes, in no order at all, in ten easy bites. Joni Mitchell: Amelia Roberta Flack: Ballad of the Sad Young Men Bette Midler: Beast of Burden Maria Muldaur: Midnight at the Oasis Santana: Samba Pa Ti Beatles: Penny Lane Van Morrison: Moondance Steely Dan: Any World that I'm Welcome to Bob Dylan: Positively 4th Street Don McLean: Vincent Harry Nilson: Without You Kate & Anna McGarrigle: Complainte pour Ste Katherine (for ms Mc Kay) Jimi Hendrix: Purple Haze Janis Joplin: Piece of my Heart Janis Ian: At 17 Love: Alone Again Paul Simon: Something so Right Chicago: If you leave me now Blood Sweat & Tears: Spinning Wheel Tim Buckley: Buzzin' Fly Jeff Buckley: Grace (yes Smurph, the boy is terrific, the album changed my life!) Eva Cassidy: Fields of Gold Doobie Brothers: What a Fool Believes Steppenwolf: Magic Carpet Ride Laura Nyro: Stony End Marvin Gaye: I heard it through the Grapevine Procul Harum: A Whiter Shade of Pale The Zombies: She's not There Ella Fitzgerald: Every Time we say Goodbye Robert Palmer: Best of Both Ways Marianne Faithful: As Tears go by Cat Stevens: Sad Lisa Doors: Riders on the Storm Sinead O'Connor: Nothing Compares Rickie Lee Jones: Rick e's in love Stevie Wonder: For Once in my Life Herbie Hancock: Watermelon Man Miles Davis: So What Nina Simone: Suzanne Mama Cass: Dream a Little Dream of Me Boudewijn de Groot: Naast Jou Julien Clerc: Ma Preference Nick Drake: River Man Billy Joel: The Longest Time Carly Simon: The Carter Family Cream: Sunshine of your Love Elton John: Your Song Fleetwood Mac: Man of the World Kate Bush: Wuthering Heights Led Zeppelin: Stairway to Heaven Going to sleep the rest of St Valentine's Day off now. From http://www.jonimitchell.com/upcoming2.html : "Hejira" is a real find because it appears to be Joni's first attempt at a music video. Seven minutes filmed on an ice-skating rink and featuring famous skater Toller Cranston; a young woman twirling in a bridal gown; and Joni herself skating around in her "black crow" outfit. Joni also lip-synchs a few verses from the song, just like in a regular MTV-style video. Mostly though, it's Toller ice-skating and I must admit, very beautifully. The colors on this re-release are bold and crisp, the sound is great, plus you get two brand-new tracks. What more could you want? This re-release of Shadows And Light gets my highest recommendation, and it finally answers a question I've had since 1980- why Joni credits Toller Cranston for "skates" in the opening credits. This is a very exciting discovery, folks! - -----Original Message----- From: owner-joni@jmdl.com [mailto:owner-joni@jmdl.com] On Behalf Of Les Irvin Sent: Monday, February 14, 2005 1:02 PM To: joni@smoe.org Subject: RE: Comment from JMDL site Here's a question issued from the website to throw out to the informed Joni masses: > joni mitchell once did a video of "River" with Toller > Cranston ice skating. And yes, this list has gone through some major changes over the years. My very first post wasn't exactly universally accepted to say the least . I was on a quest (driven by a personal coach) to live out a long time fantasy of mine, meet Joni Mitchell in the flesh. Who was to know that fantasy would come true, not only once, but 3 times over the next few years! And the timing was perfect also. Who would expect she would tour again after so many years. I got to experience it with you guys, in incredible detail, with video and audio! I have so many special friends, recordings and experiences from this list...how could I not come back eventually? I'm particularly glad to see no flame wars in progress. Although I understand a few longtime folks have left because of them. That's a bummer. Hopefully they'll be back too. For now, unfortunately, the chance of Joni putting out any new material, much less tour again, is quite slim. That is very difficult for me. I just can't find any other artist that moves me like she does, try as I may. Jonatha comes in second, but not a close one. I'm open to suggestions, but hard to please. When you have such a high standard, well, you guys understand better than anyone..... Phyliss Sherelle Smith wrote: > Wow! Phyliss????? Oh my gosh!!!! Slowin' down, And I envy you the valley that you've found." I've been over 40 for 9 years now. Every year I seem to enjoy hitting the sack early a little more. No more listening to music till 3 AM. Instead, I've been listening to an entire disc, straight-through after the day is done. This post is about one JMDL disc. Patti Whitten is a real songwriter, and this disc barely hints at her ability. Check her out on CDbaby for the real deal. Sue Mac has a really, really nice guitar. The tone is exceptionally beautiful. Sherelle can sing from her belt when the spirit moves her. (Sometimes when she does that last chorus on "Edith and the Kingpin", I go cross-eyed. My eyes actually cross. I haven't figured that out but then... I don't want to either. It must be the gospel-melissma thing.) Claudia does as fine a job on "That Song About the Midway" as she does on "Conversation". And that's saying a lot. Anyway, I'm off to bed and wanted to say, "Thanks" to these 4 JMDLers and the community at large. It's a fine disc and I'm grateful to have this souvenir. Sounding like a sentimental old fool, Lama PS, thank G*d some old guy was taking pictures that night, eh? http://www.hatstand.org/gallery/album09/SA_0900PM_SHERELLE_composite_Roll_Z_ by_Lama ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2005 #47 ******************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:onlyjoni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
