Gotta try this...a few repeats from the other list...but I'm going for songs I really enjoy whether or not they're the artist's best - however that's supposed to be defined. Anyway, Carey was indeed written about Carey Raditz. (not sure of the spelling on the last name...) I know because Eric Andersen told me so. (Sorry to those who have heard this story before.) I spent two evenings w/Monsieur Andersen & entourage (well, maybe that's too strong a work - but there were a few people who seemed to always be there) when he played at Passim in Cambridge a number of years ago. I got to hang out with him because of the aforementioned (a few days ago) songwriting group. Anyway, we did talk about Joni a bit. He was telling a story about Carey (the person) and someone else asked if Joni's song Carey was written about him. He told us that it was. I think he and Joni were spending a fair amount of time together in those days. She appeared on his Blue River album, which was released a bit after Joni's Blue. And I've often wondered if he was inspired to write "Blue River" because of her "Blue" and "River." And dang! Blue River should be in my top 50! Does everyone know his song "Come Runnin' Like a Friend" and it's Joni connection. Here's his account of writing the song in the liner notes to Danko, Fjeld, Andersen's second disc (highly recommended and apparently out of print). "I started this song in a beautiful place that abounded with seals, wild min, eagles, whales and sea otters called Sechelt, British Columbia, north of Vancouver, in 1972. The shoreline was littered with escaped timber from passing log tugs. The logs would bump together and make hollow percussive sounds in the shore waters at night. I was there visiting my writing friend Joni Mitchell. That evening star Venus burned a diamond hole in the black sky through the open window of her stone cottage. She found some mushrooms. Then part of the song happened later on the 'Rolling Thunder Review' tour." I don't have time right now to transcribe all the lyrics, but here's the beginning: I listened to your song last night Acted like you knew There was somethin' there between us That told me more than words could do You told me I was lookin' fine You said--you devil you I knew that you were wanting me Aa much as I was wanting you You took my picture once Now it's hangin' on your wall Along with all the other ones Was I so unusual? You've had many in your life I've had many too Sometimes I get the urge To just grab-a-hold of you. Chorus: If you want me you know where I am I will never fail you I'll always be your friend And if you ever need me Call me if you wanna see me I'll some runnin' back again I'll come runnin' like a friend. I always suspected they were "friends +" if you know what I mean. He was interesting, insightful, and gracious. He took out a picture of his twin boys and marveled at how lucky he was to have them. (They were very blond and very cute.) Since I'm a twin, we talked about being a twin. Anyhoo, I love Eric Andersen too and saw him here last year or thereabouts, and just about fell to pieces when he started singing, "Is it really love at all?" There was a space-themed bar in Columbus, Ohio that had a light show and I always pictured that bar "playin' that scratchy rock an' roll beneath a map of the moon." That line may be the most mis-understood line in her canon. There is an amazing mouthful in "This Flight Tonight" though... You might want to read the printed lyric for that one while she sings it, Em. If I recall correctly she *actually* sings the printed lyric: > I saw a falling star burn up Above the Las Vegas sands> Clearly, that Grandma Muse was with her that day. Anyway, Lama Em wrote:<> Ha! Subject: Will, Grace, Ellen, Dharma, Greg and Joni in Fiction I've been looking for the Joni episode on "Will and Grace" hoping to add it to my DVD collection. Bob, I know you have this already under "Joni in Fiction" but since I looked this up, I thought I would share it with the list and any members who may not have been aware of this episode. You can see the mention here, but Joni's name doesn't appear until the bottom of the page - http://www.tvtome.com/tvtome/servlet/GuidePageServlet/showid-154/epid-1971/ And what's up with that being the lowest rated show of the season?? But here's one I don't think you have Bob. Another Joni mention was on Episode 78 from the 4th Season of "Ellen" in an episode called "Ellen Unplugged." There is no mention of Joni at the below link, but the episode involves Ellen going to music camp and when Ellen meets guest star David Crosby, she doesn't believe it's really him, and introduces herself and her friends by saying, "Yeah, and I'm Joni Mitchell and this is Peter, Paul and Mary." Queen Latifah, Aaron Neville, Bonnie Raitt and Cheryl Crow also guest star in this episode. http://www.tvtome.com/tvtome/servlet/GuidePageServlet/showid-490/epid-28682/ There was also an episode of "Dharma and Greg" with a Joni mention, but since it wasn't central to the plot (and I forgot what the episode was about) it would take luck or a DVD set to find it, unless someone else here remembers it. I think it was Greg's mom who had a new hairdo, and her husband (?) exclaims.."She looks just like Joni Mitchell!" I have a VHS of this somewhere...I'll try to find it. So there's some news from TV Land. And you know there may be more..... I used to have all his stuff through '91 or '92, but I now just have a couple of them. I decided to get the Rhino Records 2-cd comp called "The Art Of Love: The Michael Franks Anthology". Now, I knew that John Guerin had appeared on many of Franks' albums -- his cute mug was on the back of the LP of The Art Of Tea -- but I hadn't known that they co-wrote (at least) one song together: "Don't Be Blue", a nice bouncy number (the version on the comp CDs is from a live performance in, I think, Australia, but I'm sure there was a regular studio version at some point that got a lot of airplay on lite jazz stations. Anyway, Franks fits right in with the Bossa Nova/breathy portuguese singing mood I've been in lately.
