I was in college, living in a big victorian (now I am one) with about 30 other guys. One guy, who had never studied music at all, decided to take the intro to piano course, and the prof allowed them to pick a piece they wanted to do as their final performance project. Kenny went right out and bought the sheet music to Bohemian Rhapsody. There were two music majors in the house, but they were grumpy and, taking one look at the piece, each said "@#$%^* no!" I was the only other person in the house who could play, so I took Kenny and the piece on. But I'd never heard the piece, and when I looked at it, I laughed and said, "Huh! Can I *hear* this?" I liked it even better when I heard it, and set out to learn to play it myself, and then *try* to teach it to Kenny. We both quicky realized he was out of his depth, and he gave up one day, saying, "What am I going to do ?-- I've got like three days left." He didn't like Burt B. or Joni, but I also had the Paul Simon Omnibus, and we managed to find something the prof could live with, but which Kenny could play. It's funny what the two music majors -- who were *almost* strict classicists - -- would tolerate, and what they hated. One of them, I remember, never noticed anything I played until one day when he heard me play Burt B's "Wives and Lovers" (a jazz waltz), and he just had to learn it himself. The other was intrigued with Joni's more classical-sounding stuff, say BIond in the Bleachers or Ludwig's tune, or the fade-out to Car On a Hill. Neither could stand any of Laura's stuff -- one of them dismissed it as sup-par Erik Satie or Bela Bartok. Savages! (the music majors, not the composers), although the one who made the comparisons did give me the first book of Microcosmos to struggle through, and Satie's Gymnopedies. Funny, I'd forgotten about all this until this discussion. Babs:Oh you know fine, of course he'll never be married, but then could you imagine a son of mine ever being married to anyone other than his mother any way, or me as a shviger? So I hear you gave your daughter away when you were a child, was that difficult, I don't like to kibitz? how are things now? Joni: They're great, I spend alot of time with her and I feel, for the first time in my life complete. By the way I really liked your version of I don't know where I stand and I have all these songs written but no one to record them. I would do it myself but my voice is too ravaged from smoking, would you like to record them?' Babs: I don't know if i am the right kind of artist to sing your music but I could give it a try and by the way when I was recording 'Tell him' with celine dion, another canadian don't you know, she told me she loved your music too and was thinking of doing a songbook series, rather like Ella fitzgerald did but of contemporary songwriters. She told me she was thinking of starting with you. Joni:Celine sings the Joni mitchell Songbook...MMn it doesn't sound half bad. My daughter Kiraulian is a huge fan of Celine's and would be thrilled if she recorded some of her Mamas songs. Babs: I've got her number in my mobile, shall I give her a call? Joni: Oh go on then Babs: Its ringing.....Hello....Oh hello Rene(Angelil not Zeilwegger), how are you? Hows Rene Junior? It would be a double album i think, let me just ask joni how many new songs she has....Joni How many new songs have you got? Joni: About 200 Babs: Celine my darling its gonna be a box set, We can do a dvd in the studio, rehearsals, footage of all our houses, shots of all of us sitting round georgeous big tables with fruit and musical instruments in the back-ground. We can film the blossoming of our relationship.
