RR, On DED alone, it matters a LOT which version you listen to. The original vinyl was the best we had for decades but it's murky where it isn't glassy. It's annoying. All of Joni's layers and textures smear into a "migrane headache" on the original CD & LP. That's not what she put down. Somewhere along the line the sound was degraded. Since Don Rowe isn't around, I'll say it, "DED is misunderstood and under appreciated." Do you have the DED in The COMPLETE GEFFEN RECORDINGS? My opinion is the GEFFEN box is the only version that has what Joni laid down. My opinion is that getting the right DED and a complete version of the wordless "Speechless" make it worth the money. It's a DIVx video formatted file, will play full screen (640 x480) with stereo sound. The original was analog, so the quality is not theatre quality, but it's fine for just watching. You can download the file here: http://www.pinataperspective.com/Joni-CBC.mov.ff.avi Depending on your setup, the file may stream instead of downloading. If you have trouble and want to download the file instead of streaming it, try this link: ftp://www.pinataperspective.com/Joni-CBC.mov.ff.avi To play it, you need the DIVx codec, which you can download from www.divx.com. The freeware VLC media player (www.videolan.org) also will play this with no additional anything needed besides their player. Both of these options are available for Windows and Macintosh computers. (VLC doesn't run on Mac OS9 though, I think). The file is 278 MB. Enjoy, and let me know if anyone has any trouble downloading. I've limited the number of concurrent downloaders to 5 so my bandwidth isn't all consumed by this. ========================== This is not the best of all possible worlds, in case you missed the irony in Voltaire. Start with drum machines and plastic sounding synths. For all her cauterwauling about commercial crap in the marketplace, DED reeks of a blatant attempt to capture the MTV audience. I do like Good Friends and Shiny Toys. The rest get points for good intentions, but tend to be wordy and tuneless, the start of a trend that plagued her later work. 3 Great Stimulants (DED) and Number One (from CMIARS) were infinitely more effective at the Amnesty Int'l show as basic, unproduced songs. IMO, of course. Your smileage may vary. She was "hearing" french syllables in there and had no french text for it. She talked about "Speechless" on the "My Top 12" programme on the BBC and played a snippet. In the "Come In From the Cold" video, she told the story again but by then she had added the words of "Two Grey Rooms". The track list of disc1 of THE COMPLETE GEFFEN RECORDINGS calls it "Two Grey Rooms demo ". I don't think "demo" is the right word for it since it has no words. I have just joined the list. I have been a fan of Joni's since I was 16 (I am now 40). I have mostly gotten rid of all my vinyl since the advent of CD and mp3. The first Joni album I ever heard and owned was the Australia only release - The World of Joni Mitchell. Since then, I have strived to get my hands on every Joni recording ever made. To say that Joni has shaped my life seems a little obsessive but, her words have made me think about my life many times over which consequently, lead me to continue thinking in those directions so, in a way, it's true. Maybe it's more accurate to say that Joni taught me to think more deeply, to see a beauty in life and to appreciate language as a method of communication. Since I'm not familiar with this discussion list yet, I won't ramble on here. I have a request; Americans were lucky enough to see a TV special called, "An All-Star Tribute To Joni Mitchell" on the TNT network. It has (to my knowledge) not made it to Australian screens. I am desperate to get my hands on a copy of that show. I have managed to download all the songs in mp3 format if anyone would like a copy of the subsequent CD that I have made but, I really want to see it. Can anyone help me out? I don't care what format. I can convert anything - videotape, mpg, avi, etc. Thank for your time. "Lucky Girl" is one of my favorites from any album...the sax (live or synth?) on "Shiny Toys" is wonderful, and "TTGStimulants" is fantastic. Perhaps not as important as other albums in her catalogue, but I like this one. I feel that same way about CMIARS. I was dumfounded when I heard that she was re-issuing the Geffen series in a box set. Not surprised, though. I do hope that she wasn't too disappointed when the same people that ignored the records in the 80's did the same thing in 2004. The demo of "Two Grey Rooms" was worth the purchase price alone, for me. Oh - and as far as DED goes, its my all-time favorite Joni album cover, hands down. How sweet would that be? I could take Joni with me everywhere! All Joni, all the time! WooHoo!!! Ahem. I guess I'd put a few more artists on there too, as I'm all about diversity.
