This is one post, Joni, that I'd rather you not read. Well first, She was in town and she was staying with me and Bree. She was out late and 4:49 am I was just getting up to go to school (work) about my usual time. . and joni was just getting in. . Bree greets her at the door and says to joni, "how about a nightcap?" I always come with fear and trepidation to the list when someone does a Joni cover. To me her work is so complete as is, doing a cover has to be more of a tribute to her than anything because I don't think anyone can do it better but I am soooo biased towards Joni! I agree with your take on Azure's vocals...very low and sultry yet I notice how she tries to give us a special interpretation of the song. When she gets to the part "Neighbor's trying to sleep and yelliing,'Not so loud'..." she actually sings it in a whisper which shows me her respect for Joni's material. I just wasn't sure if everyone would like the sultriness of her voice on the song. But I must be quite honest with you..hearing her makes me go, "Dang! I can do this! I can do this! Also, when I read your email I went, "Dang!" again because it was always my intention to do a cover of "Hissing" as well. A little frustrating. I was going to say I wish I could meet her but actually, I think I did when I visited my brother in Hawaii in 1996. I wish I'd known she was a Joni fan back then. She didn't do any of Joni's material when I saw her perfomance. Anyway, she really takes the time to try to get the listener to hear the words as well as the music and I really like that. It is not easy to respond to a particular thread, so I'm just shouting in the dark here. I have always been partial to Martin Marquis. I'm not convinced the Elixers last any longer. "Last" is a relative term. When I was gigging, I would change strings for every practice session and again for the gig. There is nothing quite like a new set of strings for the first hour or two after they calm down from being strung! Now, I play pretty good for free and change strings about once a month. Somebody mentioned "crown and anchor me..." as referencing a popular tattoo. I agree with the interpretation that Joni was telling somebody to make a committment or let her go. I would add that an anchor topped by a crown is the emblem of the Canadian Navy. My guess is Joni had seen a few of those tattoos. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 06 Jan 2005 15:28:22 -0500 From: Smurfycopy@aol.com Subject: Re: strings and things Brad writes: << I would add that an anchor topped by a crown is the emblem of the Canadian Navy. >> That is so cool to learn, Brad. New member here and my first posting. I get these periodic obsessions with Blue, and this time it took me to the home page and to this list. Speaking of the list, is there an archive anywhere? Anyway... On a classical music list that I inhabit, a lister wrote that she had attended a funeral at which the last song was probably by Joni, judging by the distinctive voice. The song was about crossing the water, people going away and out of sight, loved ones calling from a distance. To this lister, the melody sounded a lot like Brahms's "Der Abend" from Op 64. Now under the circumstances, the lister really couldn't have asked what the music was. Does the above ring any bells here? For the record, below are Brahms's lyrics and the lister's translation: "Siehe, wer aus des Meers kristallner Woge Lieblich lachelnd dir winkt! Erkennt dein Herz sie? Rascher fliegen die Rosse, Tethys, die Gottliche, winkt." "Look who's smiling with love from across the sea's crystal waves! Does your heart recognize her? Quickly the horses fly, Tethys, the divine, calls." And finally, have you all ever discussed any possible classical music influences on JM? Mitch __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? She has told the story in interviews a couple of times about hearing a piece of music in a Kirk Douglas film (Rachmaninoff I think) and being so moved that she went into the record store listening booth repeatedly to hear it again & again. Also, on the radio show "My Top 12" in 1983, she lists among Little Richard, Steely Dan and Stevie Wonder a piece by Stravinsky (Rites Of Spring). I know she's a fan of Debussy as well and used one of his compositions as opening music for her 2000 Orchestral tour.
