I don't think he could inspire those words in her. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Jan 2005 18:40:24 -0800 (PST) From: mags h Subject: Dr .Joni Mitchell on CBC television hot off the press .... In a word, wow! a wonderful programme, and tribute to Joni. To see Joni and Kilauren together in Montreal at McGill University, fantastic!!. I was gushing with pride, teary eyed, the whole bit. Michael O, Im so envious that you were there (happy too!) (paraphrased) Joni said it was a great honour to be recognized for her body of work. She also said she is impatient with some of the theories about her. She finds it problematic when others assume to know exactly what her songs meant, what she was trying to say. Joni went on to say that it's fine and well to have our opinions about her work, the meaning within, however, I got the distinct impression that as long as people didnt say "this" is what she meant, she has no problem with discussions and interpretations . Doug/Catherine...did you catch that part? I was writing/scribbling point form notes like crazy, trying to grasp it all... many highlights for me... Joni singing Dawn Treader, Both Sides Now, early version, sorry I couldnt keep up...and Doug if you did tape this, perhaps you can offer it up as a tree? Please send me a copy ! oh an assortment of performance clips....Take 30 1967, bits of Shadows and Light video, Come in From the Cold video, dancing with Klein, segment from a paper given..."How Black is Joni Mitchell" which is awesome and made me cry, again with such pride for Joni. Id love to hear the whole thing, or read it . Wonder if it is available. Kilauren was in the front row filming the ceremonies , proud daughter that she is. After the degree was bestowed upon Joni, she spoke to a classroom of students. One student wanted to know what advice Joni had for new song writers/musicians. Joni told them not to compromise, and to keep their individuality...the students were thrilled and overwhelmed to be in such close quarters with Joni. The Joni and Kilauren story was told again, and again, tears sprung like rain. No need to explain is there, really? Such a moving tale. Joni reiterated that the painful loss of her daughter had served as inspiration to write so many songs, and now that she has Kilauren back in her life, she no longer has that same need, that same inspiration to write. As soon as the student started talking about their reunion, Joni patted Kilauren's knee, and they kept snuggling into one another, nary a dry eye in the house, Im sure. Another woman (an adoptive mum) spoke to the reunion and she burst into tears , and Joni was quite moved by that. I know this disappoints many fans, however, I'd like to look at this statement from this side now. I'm happy that she has given us so much, such a vast body of work that we continue to be enthralled with, moved by, a body of work which sets her apart from the mainstream and then some. Oh yea, Joni's black alright. There were film clips demonstrating Joni's unique chord positions, complex rhythms and structures. So many things I know Im missing. Back to the classroom, a student brought a guitar up to the front of the class room, and it turned out to be the very first guitar that Joni played. She had borrowed it from the student's uncle. (student's name was Adam??) cant recall, sorry. Joni played a little bit, but not much at all really. As for the future, the said that Joni is working on her autobiography, which we are waiting for with baited breath :-) so proud, so very proud of you Joni... bless your wonderful heart!!!! Something was on TV? I guess the downside of being a non-TV-watcher is, I don't even read the TV guides. I know there was mention here on the list of something being on tomorrow, but I guess that's something completely different. They packed a lot into 25 minutes. Not too much boring intellectual drivel and many short archival clips, some I haven't seen before. I've already made an SVCD for anyone who wants a copy. There is a thin "breaking news" banner at the bottom of the screen, not too obnoxious. I have it on tape also but discs are cheaper to mail. Doug Note my new email address. It's so frustrating listening to that album, because her voice is so intimate and she's singing about such personal things, i get upset that i don't know her better -- it feels like she's inviting the listener to become part of her family.
