There are now 244 items in Joni in Fiction, which you can access by going to jmdl.com and clicking on Fiction, or you can take this expressway: http://www.jmdl.com/fiction While you're there, you'll discover lots of goodies, like this Joni-influenced Christmas classic in the Miscellaneous section, written by Bob Muller back in 2000. Hey! Maybe I'll do a parody, too. How about "Santa and Marlena," with Santa "jingling" into surgery? Yeah, like I have time! This is my Christmas shopping day! Gotta go! Bye! Merry Christmas, kids! The Night Before Christmas Bob Muller 'Twas the night before Christmas, and all 'round my place I was finally unwinding from the holiday pace Gifts had been purchased and wrapped one and all With just minor bruises from trips to the mall! The parties were over, the church functions too For the next couple days I'd have nothing to do No bikes to assemble or toys to arrange And hope upon hope, no clothes to exchange When out on the lawn there arose such a hissing I sprang from my chair to see what I was missing I turned down my music and had a good look, Twas thinking it might be a burglar or crook! The Moon at the Window was bright to be sure And it caused the commotion to appear as a blur Then there was the strangest thing e'er in my 'burb, A big limousine that was parked on my curb! With a long-blond-haired rider, with cheeks oh so bony I knew in a moment it had to be Joni! She opened the door, with her crew she came out, And approaching my doorway she let out this shout "On Pansy, On Nietzsche, On Larry & Brian, On Shorter, On Isham, you guys quit your cryin' It'll be our great joy for a Joni fan so big To give him the gift of his own private gig!" At that point in time I knew not what to think, Perhaps I'd had excess martinis to drink? But up to my doorstep, they soon started knockin' "Come in here, ya'll, and let's get to rockin'!" It wasn't much space but we soon made it do With guitar & piano & dulcimer too! Joni then stated she'd play multi-sets And then I could join her for several duets Her voice how it twinkled! You just had to hear it! And of course, twixt her lips, an American Spirit, So all through the halls did her crystal sounds ring, From "Harlem in Havana" to "I Had A King" She played all night long, I could not trust my eyes, She said she'd do one more set, just for surprise, And then with remaining time she had afforded, Played all of the songs she had never recorded! I lept to my feet and applauded with glee, To finally hear 'lost' songs like "Strawflower Me", And when she'd completed the final refrains, She said she would encore with "Paprika Plains"! She spoke not a word, but went straight to her work Played all 16 minutes with nary a quirk, She finished, and told me "It's not quite enough, For here in my bag is some other cool stuff!" I pondered and wondered, pray what would she bring us "Don Juan's Reckless Demo's" & "Alternate Mingus" And I was so pleased that she gave them to me, And knew that I'd soon be creating a tree! I gave her a hug for the gifts she had brought me And thanked her for all of the lessons she'd taught me She said that her visit had been loads of fun, And she'd shoot for Ashara's in 2001! She sprang for her car, to her band gave a whistle And away they then sped like a heat-seeking missile But I heard her exclaim on this night oh so blest, "I love ALL of my fans, you guys are the best!!" ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Dec 2004 05:46:56 -0800 (PST) From: Nuriel Tobias Subject: Re: graffiti, 2 men, Em (No Amanda Lear Content) What both of you guys share is worse than Salvador Dali & Federico Garcia Lorka's friendship! I solved my little problem regarding Joni tunings with buying three guitars. I keep each tuned as follows: Standard: EADGBE Open G: DGDGBD Open D: DADF#AD The bulk of Joni's tunings are in Open G and Open D, or minor derivatives of these tunings. For example, I can take my Open D guitar and by adjusting one string only, I can come up with other Joni tunings, such as DADDAD, DADEAD, DADGAD, and DAEF#AD. On the Open G guitar, I can adjust the bass string and make the tunings CGDGBD and GGDGBD. The standard tuning guitar can easily be tuned to dropped D - DADGBE. I also sometimes drop the high E to D to play in DADGBD which is a tuning used often by Neil Young and Patty Griffin. I did not buy very expensive guitars, but they sound great. Although some of them are pretty old - y'know they don't make 'em like they used to. You could find some great old guitars at a second-hand music shop for a really decent price. (Santa Baby, please bring me a computer for my home!!!!). All year I have wanted to share my last year's "very Joni Christmas" with you, so here you go: My two sons, Christopher (25) and Michael (19) made it a very Joni Christmas for me last year. (An aside: Those of you who have raised teenagers know that it is not an easy feat. It is even harder when, after 20 years of marriage, you go through an emotionally and financially devastating divorce. I remember Chris once, as a teenager, GLARING at me with such hostility in his eyes when I tried to enforce a curfew, sneering at me: "You don't know ANYTHING about life!" Now it's funny of course, but then it was not.). Anyway, in recent Christmasses (sp?) past, the boys began giving me gift cards. Sure, those are nice, but they are still, in some ways, kind of a cop-out -- like you don't really KNOW the person and what they would want, and you don't spend much time trying to figure that out. But last Christmas, they surprised me. They each had little gift bags for me. In Michael's were two CDs: Miles of Aisles (which of course I had, but did not let on) and Mingus. I squealed with joy when I took them out, and he looked so so pleased. And then in Chris's were two DVDs: Woman of Heart and Mind, and Shadows and Light. Again I squealed, and they both looked so happy -- which totally warmed their Mom's heart. They GET ME now! Later that day, I put in Shadows and Light. Except for the Joni tribute at the Hammerstein theater, I have never seen Joni on my TV screen before, and I was TOTALLY enraptured. Ecstatic! Joyful! Joni on my TV!!!!! Wowee zoweee!!! See my big smile? Christopher, who is a big big tease, and also a big teddy bear sweetheart, just stood there shaking his head, smiling from ear to ear, laughing at me. I whined: "What????????????" He then shook his head again and said: "I NEVER should have bought that for you!" (clearly very pleased that he made his mom happy). I asked, incredulously, "Why NOT???????" He answered: "Because it's like buying a case of beer for an alcoholic!!!!!!!!!" Now, if I were more quick-witted like Catherine of Toronto or Monsieur le Smurph, I would have quickly rejoindered: "Oh, but Chris! I could drink a case of Joni, and I'd still be on my feet. I'd still be on my feet!" Alas, my wit only came to me an hour later. I wish all of you a wonderful whatever you celebrate. Being here with you all this year has been a wonderful thing. Thank you for embracing me as you have. I wish each and every one of you peace and love and comfort and joy and whatever else your heart desires. Merry Christmas, Darlings! I hadn't made a record yet, but Joe Boyd had taken me to England with the Incredible String Band and I'd done some work in coffeehouses there. I'd come back all Carnaby Street, with false eyelashes, sequined belts, flashed out. David had just purchased the boat that he loved. I remember being introduced to him and thinking he reminded me of Yosemite Sam. I used to secretly call him Yosemite Sam in my mind. I don't think I ever called him that to his face, but I might have. He mistakenly thought I wrote a song called "The Dawntreader" for him and was thinking of naming his boat Dawntreader. He ended up keeping the original name, Mayan, which was good because it a history already. I guess people identify with songs that you write and think you wrote them just for them.'
