I wonder if you all would do me and yourself a favor? In the next few first days of this cold, cold winter...stoke up a fire, turn down the lights, get yourself a hot toddy or peppermint schnapps and listen to your favorite Joni renditions of "Urge For Going" and "River." I was *so* feeling it that I invoked my poetic license, and extended the metaphor to include "Cold Blue Steel." (That's a stretch, I know. Your actual mileage may vary :-) Holy Mary Mother of God...I love those songs and listening to them this time of year. Urge for going? Geez, I'm gone. That woman sends me. Happy holidays and God bless us every one. - -Julius ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Dec 2004 17:22:58 GMT From: "Ruth Davis" Subject: Cheap guitars, eyeshades and guns Does anyone out there know what kind of guitar Joni was playing around the time of STAS? I just have a 12-string now, which I rarely play, mainly because it is difficult to keep tuned. I would like to experiment with Joni's tunings so I can learn a few songs from STAS and the earlier albums. I want to find a guitar that will stand up to retuning without neck problems, and which I can afford. Any suggestions, anyone? You'd probably have to look at pics of her playing to see what guitar she was playing but a good quality luthier would know just what you need for constant tuning and re-tuning. I know I took my Sigma Martin (Korean assembled Martin bodies) to a luthier (I love using that word, can you tell? He never made me a lute though...) and he adjusted the neck and the top fret (the one just before it seperates into the tuning holes) to lower the action. It has made it much easier to play. Maybe they should start producing guitar necks that are calibrated to withstand the sort of constant changes in pressure that re-tuning gives. I don't think they are any less prone to neck problems than other guitars-she has talked about how retuning causes destabilization of the neck. Martins are unique in that the truss rod inside the neck is not adjustable. I think any time you loosen the strings drastically for a Joni tuning, the neck will take awhile to adjust itself to the decreased tension, since guitars are made to accept the tension of a "regular" tuning. Also, on the very slack tunings, you may get more string buzz, since the untensed neck is now bowing backward. I would return the guitar to standard tuning after visiting Joniland. Once she could afford it, Joni traveled with a gaggle of guitars set up for the various tunings. All were Martins, I think. I don't know if other brands might be more suitable for frequent retuning. You could always go with the VG-8 (??), the digital setup Joni used on her last few albums. The strings are not tuned, you punch a footswitch and the tuning changes electronically. I think any decent guitar would work with Joni tunings, as I said, I would just return it to standard afterward.
