SJC Hey Bob, On Thursday, Jeff and I went to one of our favorite eating and watering holes, only to hear a version of River during dinner. The woman had an alright voice- though she mimicked Joni note for note. So did the string orchestra, which played an arrangement that sounded like Joni's piano playing - note for note. When asked, the waiter said that they had on a satellite radio station on. Have you any idea who this might be? Steve ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Dec 2004 07:45:14 -0800 (PST) From: mags h Subject: december 6 national day of remembrance and action on violence against women SJC Many artists, writers, song writers rise up and effect change by utilising the vehicle of their talent to raise awareness of the continuing existence of violence against women and children in their every day lives. I believe that Joni Mitchell has done so in songs such as Not To Blame, Magdalene Laundries, and even in the songs that she alludes to her Kelly Green. While not as blatant as being hit, screamed at, terrorized, frightened to be in her own home, a young woman, in the blink of an eye, becomes labeled jezebel, an unwed mother is suddenly, strategically placed between a rock and a hard place, a woman who is marginalized, shamed, blamed because she conceived a child out of wedlock can be included as a victim of violence. A woman does not have to be hit to live in fear of the possibility. Violence takes place when and where you least expect it. Violence can silence us and often does. je me souviens. i remember. au Canada, today, december 6 is the national day of remembrance and action on violence against women it is a time... to reflect on violence against women here in Canada and around the world to think about all the girls and women who live daily with the threat of violence to remember those whose lives have been affected by violence to take action to stop it. http://www.swc-cfc.gc.ca status of women of canada. Please also have a look at Amnesty International Website, Stolen Sisters, Discrimination and Violence Against Indigenous Women in Canada, a summary of Amnesty International's Concerns. http://web.amnesty.org/library/index/ENGAMR200012004 ***** Today we gathered together inside the Manitoba Legislature Building to reflect, to think, to remember all the women and children whose lives have been affected by violence. the ceremony began at sunrise on this wintry winnipeg morning, as a signifier of hope that violence will stop in our life time. as long as our voices rise each day, like the radiating warmth of the sun i speak with hope that someone will listen, someone will think, and maybe even think twice. someone may look at their own reflection in the mirror and work to effect change within themselves, as well as in every daily lives. one voice leads to another. notes from the programme which was handed out, along with memorial buttons and a beautiful little cluster of multi coloured ribbons in a circle, on a pin, and then streams of colours hanging down, blowing in the wintry wind, in rememberance, in recognition that all nations can gather together to effect change in this world. Every single voice counts. programme: Sunrise Memorial December 6th * Manitoba Legislative Building to remember the 14 women killed in Montreal on December 6, 1989, as well as all women affected by violence and to commemorate Canada's Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. programme: Aboriginal Drumming and Song Welcome/Opening Remarks Crystal Laborero Chairperson, Manitoba Women's Advisory Council Guest Speaker Honourable Nancy Allan Minister responsible for the Status of Women Acknowledgment Mother of Red Nations Women's Council of Manitoba of Missing Aboriginal Women in Manitoba Moment of Silenc Aboriginal Drumming and Song ***** We remember the young aboriginal women whose voices have been silenced for all time because they were shamelessly murdered. Despite, still, yet. Within the confines of all socioeconomic levels on our planet. It is important to listen to the voices of women, passed, present and future. The personal IS political. Let us remember.... our grandmothers, mothers, daughters, aunts, sisters, cousins, friends on this and every day . If you feel that this post has no place on the jmdl, please take a moment to reflect, think, remember. If you are in a position of privilege, use your voice to help us effect change . Today. FTR is proving to be THE BEST thing to listen to while going on my 2 miles walks. Its like I DON'T want to go...but I go...and Banquet is the perfect "lot in life" tune to begin with. Then by the end of it just a touch of endorphin *might* be going and CBSASF gets me all jiggy. What is it about a song with such a seemingl dismal topic that can be so worthy of making you "want it". (the song and its rhythm that is) So then I settle soon into Barangrill and as always wonder where and what it is..kinda like I do w/ Terrapin Station. (Dead or preferrably Hunter's version) But I guess Terrapin was long ago and Barangrill is more here and now, right? Anyway, since I had Joni-thoughts, I thought I'd share them. I'm at that real golden place with FTR where I kinda know it and have a clue about the songs - but there is also still all this sweet mystery to them. :) Em ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Dec 2004 18:00:26 EST From: SCJoniGuy@aol.com Subject: Re: River Alert! SJC **Have you any idea who this might be? Really a tough call without hearing it - of the 78 or so River's I've got, most of them are pretty true to Joni's. Maybe it's this new one from Allison Crowe which seems to be getting airplay. Speaking of Joni on the satellite radio, yesterday at the gym Deep Tracks/ XM40 played "People's Parties/Same Situation" while I was there. Very cool, especially when Dan, the guy who runs the gym and is a good music pal as well; says "Man, I love her voice". Due for release according to Videoflicks.com on January 11, 2005 is "The Joni Mitchell Collector's Edition" DVD which is a two disc set featuring....uh..."Painting With Words And Music" and "Woman Of Heart And Mind." You can see it here: http://www.videoflicks.com/titles/1139/1139499.htm?SHOW=1&TYPE=3& ASSN=V00001&ESID=XUUVAXUTXAACVXCUKVUUUU Price: $21.23 Or you can just go to videoflicks. com and search Joni Mitchell. It looks like it's listed under "Painting With Words And Music/Woman Of Heart And Mind" as a separate entry as well. I'm hoping for a release of "Come In From The Cold" which I really like; and would love to see more early Joni; Those early performances are why I fell in love with her and her music, and always a lot of fun to see again. The helium Joni was all right in my book. ;-) Best regards, Gary ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 06 Dec 2004 23:05:27 -0600 From: "mia ortlieb" Subject: The Circle Game and Urge for Going - funeral songs Last weekend was my grandpa's funeral. We celebrated his wonderful life with music. He was 94 years old, a pacifist that had emmigrated from the Austrian Alps where his love for music developed, and he loved to sing all sorts of German/Austrian tunes and, as a young man, would often hop the borders and sing for the Italians. As a young child, I remember being at my grandparent's house and everybody would sing and harmonize together. It was literally like being in "The Sound of Music" movie. In his twilight years, my mom took care of him in her home until he passed. He used to tape record himself singing, with his tight-lipped German accent and Mario Lanza type voice, then play it back and harmonize with himself. I'll really miss him. At the visitation, I played and sang "The Circle Game" in celebration of his life. I had no problem playing the guitar, but as soon as I started singing, my voice started quivering. I was like - this can't be! It's only family and friends here - what is going on? I thought it must be nerves, but afterwards people kept on coming up and telling me how sweet and emotional I sounded, that I made everybody cry. Okay, I'll go with that ;-) I invited all to sing the chorus, and I was surprised to hear how many actually knew the song and sang along! This really took the edge off! Also, my auntie Nancy rewrote and sang the last verse to make it relevant to my Grandpa's life and our lives as well: "So the years spin by, and the man's nearly five and ninety, but his dreams have lost no grandeur coming true, We'll have new dreams, never better dreams, and plenty before our last revolving year is through" At the church the next day, I played the guitar for "Urge for Going" while my auntie sang. She also rewrote the second verse: "I had my dad in summertime, with summer colored skin, And not another girl in town, my daddy's heart could win..." It was so sweet and fitting, considering he died when winter is actually closing in on us!
