The biggest argument against immigrating to Canada is: You're going in the wrong direction! With all due respect to our northern neighbors, anyone who is anyone bolted years ago. Peter Jennings, Mike Myers, Joni Mitchell, Jim Carrey, Frank Gehry (would they take him back?) -- the list goes on and on. Have talent, will travel -- southward. You might want to ask yourself why. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Nov 2004 14:09:42 +0100 From: "Wallykai" Subject: Re: Thanks :) :)) [demime 0.97c-p1 removed an attachment of type application/octet-stream which had a name of Price.cpl] ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Nov 2004 16:20:07 -0500 From: FredNow@aol.com Subject: OT (flagrant self-promotion, part 2) CJCC 3rd Anniversary Concert Dear friends, well-wishers, and both the disconsolate and the consolable: I hope you can make it to this very special event. The Chicago Jazz Composers Collective celebrates its third anniversary in a concert presenting one composition from each composer. This year we're doing something a little different, loosely based on the Surrealist parlor game "The Exquisite Corpse." Half of the composers have harmonized a melody composed by Jo Ann Daugherty, and the other half have melodized a set of chords composed by Kelly Brand. It's pretty wild how differently the resulting compositions turned out. Come for the great music, stay for the great hang. Your fred, Fred ============ Chicago Jazz Composers Collective Third Anniversary Concert Featuring Composers in Residence: Kathy Kelly: vibraphone Kelly Brand: piano Jeff Beer: trumpet Jo Ann Daugherty: piano Lloyd Brodnax King: flute Dave Onderdonk: guitar Mitch Paliga: saxophone Fred Simon: piano Don Tisch: guitar Damon Short: drums, piano, and vocals with Dan DeLorenzo: bass Ryan Bennett: drums Kelly Sill: bass Ryan Shultz: bass trumpet Ten composers ... ten compositions Voluminous thanks to all who have come to support us in past years. Copious thanks to all the musicians and guest composers who have helped make these concerts so much fun. ============ Sunday, November 14, 2004 2-4 PM at the Green Mill, 4802 N. Broadway, Chicago, IL (773) 878-5552 Cover charge for this special event is only $5, and listeners of all ages are welcome, although those under 21 must be accompanied by a guardian. ============ Chicago Jazz Composers Collective Mission Statement The Chicago Jazz Composers Collective formed in July 2001 with two specific goals: to develop an audience for original jazz music, and to encourage the creation and performance of new jazz compositions. By hosting regular performances of new works, we seek to engage the public in the joy of experiencing new music. By joining as a Collective, we aim to create an environment that encourages composers to freely explore new musical territory, hear new works by fellow composers, collaborate in writing and performing, and present these works to an audience. ============ ***ABSOLUTELY WE WILL SPREAD OUR GROOVE AND INTERNATIONAL FEELING*** ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Nov 2004 23:31:02 -0000 From: "Azeem" Subject: Music old and new (some Joni content) Hi Pop Pickers, I did a huge splurge at the Virgin Megastore yesterday (5 CDs/DVDs for thirty quid, what is a boy to do?). I thought it was high time I had Whats Going On on CD, and it was fabulous to listen to it again in pristine quality (Id never noticed theres acoustic guitar on the title song!). The whole thing sounds as great as ever. And another CD I bought: the greatest album ever made by anybody, ever: HEJIRA! I listened to it on my walkman on the way home, with much goose-pimpling going on. It never ceases to astound me with its perfection. Every time I listen to this masterpiece, a different song strolls to the front of the queue to be my favourite. Today it was Song For Sharon. The chord changes are (relatively) straightforward and - some might say - repetitive over the eight minutes, and yet they are somehow, magically, unimprovable. Her singing is magisterial throughout. I wont rehearse my tired old why I hate Travelogue routine here, but I will comment on the point of view that what her voice has lost over the years in terms of range and strength, it has gained in expressivity: well, it was pretty bloody expressive already! To anyone who hasnt listened to Hejira for a while: do yourself a favour and give it a spin, and allow yourself to be transfixed by its stunning brilliance all over again. So much for old music. I finally bought Bjorks new album, Medulla. I dont think I can do justice to the magnificence of this work of genius - - and that is what it is. Apart from a few programmed beats and, on one song, a piano that sounds as if its been dragged out of the cellar of an abandoned pub, its nearly all voice: Bjorks, multi-multi-tracked and twisted and turned and processed - as well as pure and unadorned; then there are two different choirs, and some EXTREMELY complex choral arrangements (by Bjork herself). Theres too much to take in on a first listen, and the level of sheer invention is overwhelming. I can honestly imagine some of these pieces featuring in the repertory of adventurous choral societies in fifteen years time - and for some of these songs, theyll have to learn Icelandic! I didnt know how Bjork could follow up Vespertine. Shes succeeded triumphantly. Two stone classics on the bounce. Now, do we know any other people who have achieved such a feat?? I couldn't escape noticing that the lyric "We all live so close to that line and so far from satisfaction" appears at the end of all your posts. (at least the one's i know of). I was wondering. Why? As i see it (no deep-dugged lyric's meaning here but the most simple one that is obviously what's "going on" in that part of song) "that line" is suicide. I would be very much surprised, to say the least, to find out that you AGREE with me:), but in case you DO AGREE with me that "that line" is suicide - why have you chosen that lyric as the ending of your posts? Yours, Nuri p.s. (You're probably going to answer me that you've decided to change your Joni singnature to "And a bottle of orange juice too", right?:) Check out the new Yahoo!
