To my surprise it featured a little Joni; lights go down and out from the speakers we hear Joni singing ACOY, the whole of the song no less. A little later, after some dialogue we again hear ACOY this time playing backwards to signify a flashback in time. There was also a mention of her when one of the cast members enquires about the music playing, he is told "we don't have any Joni Mitchel I'm afraid". He was a tortured love soul, so it was only fitting he was a Joni fan. I am especially gratified that you are so proud of your project. To me, that is what it's really all about. Can your CD be purchased online anywhere (CD Baby, Amazon.com)? Fred, I am really really happy for you and I would like to propose something to support you and all of our other artists on this list. I truly belive we have some of the most talented, most gifted artists on the planet right here on this list. Their is a depth of musicality and emotion that comes from our love for Joni. I know in my heart that she has been such a direct influence on us all. I know of some of our JMDL artists off the top of my head, but I know there are so many more that I don't know. What I am trying to get at is this; We've always tried to support one another through the years directly and indirectly and we have all been so proud of each other. I want to take it a step further and ask if we can create a JMDL Artist's Page with musical clips, pictures of paintings, whatever that artist does to show their creativity and a way for others viewing to support that artist. I would love to see a thank you or dedication to Joni for being an inspiration for our creativity some where on the page. I want Joni and everyone else to see what happens when a person follows their heart. That person becomes contagious and infects others so that they too become creative. Joni is like a ripple in a big pond that has affected everyone and everything around her. Our hearts are pure and full of admiration for this fact and I truly believe our art and creativity reflects that. I for one am committing right now, should this become a reality, to support every artist on that page or link. We've been together so long and helped each other through so much, it just feels like the right thing to do. Maybe down the road we can get some press about it and help promote each other better. There are so many on this list that have found very solid and tangible ways of supporting themselves as artists and so many others that are struggling to do the same. There are ways to survive and make a living in the world of the arts. For instance a friend of mine who is the PR Director for a straight ahead jazz club in St. Louis called "Jazz at the Bistro" suggested that I do a presale of my CD to offset costs of the initial printing and pressing of the CD and insert. Most of my woes have always come from being financially unable to print CD's or do anything else musically related. I know there are many others who can say the same thing that subscribe to the list. My family, who has equally thin pockets like mine but big hearts are seeing this as a real opportunity to help and have started committing to get 10 or more presales for me. Eureka! I know that there are other artists on this list that have come up with unique ways to support and promote themselves that could benefit others here who are trying to do the same. okay...turning the lightbulb off now!!! Toward that end, I'm overjoyed to announce the release of my new album: REMEMBER THE RIVER Fred Simon - piano, Paul McCandless - woodwinds, Steve Rodby - acoustic bass It was recorded direct to stereo on the 25th and 26th of March, 2004, at Pick-Staiger Concert Hall by Ken Christianson, Pro Musica, Chicago. I'm gratified to have made this album at this moment along the way, and grateful to Paul and Steve for so generously giving such beautiful voice to my music. I hope every one of you, or even every other one of you, gets a chance to check it out ... I'm really proud of this record. Your fred, Fred ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 06 Nov 2004 16:33:22 +0000 From: Howard Subject: Re: Joni and music theory (Turbulent Indigo rhythm) Turbulent Indigo uses what I like to call the "classic Joni shuffle". Several other songs use the same basic rhythm (e.g. Cherokee Louise and Crazy Cries of Love). It's not really a waltz, i.e it's not written in 3/4 time, but the rhythm does make use of lots of triplet rhythms (groups of three). Songs like this are often written out in 12/8, or sometimes 6/8. You might also see them written in 4/4 with the marking "shuffle time" or something similar. What makes this rhythm interesting is the contrast of the faster triplets against the slower, more even beat of four in the bar. If you try counting a simple 1 2 3 4, then replace each beat with a group of three: 1-2-3 2-2-3 3-2-3 4-2-3. That's the basic shuffle. Joni then does a lot of interesting accenting of the triplets, so the rhythm seems to pulse and ebb and flow against the steady beat of 4 that holds things together. Sometimes the triplet feel stands out, which is what gives it the "waltz" flavour, but there's always the contrast of the triplets against the slower beat of four that keeps it interesting (not to mention challenging to play on acoustic guitar!) Haven't heard those other 2 yet. So will be sure to pay attention then, when I do hear them. > Sometimes the triplet feel stands out, which is what gives it the > "waltz" flavour, but there's always the contrast of the triplets > against > the slower beat of four that keeps it interesting (not to mention > challenging to play on acoustic guitar!) Wonder how it would sound with 2 people playing it on guitar. I guess one thing it sort of reminds me of is people playing music together who have never played together before, but are feeling all loosy-goosy together and coming up with some awkward but somehow fascinating little riffs. Another thing that has occured to me, and this may really not apply for technical reasons (and I have no clue about this), is, what would it sound like if someone covered this and started off real tentative and weak and vulnerable but yet tenacious, and then some other guy came and jammed on it a bit, and THEN an orchestra (of indeterminate size or type) could come in at the end and blow your ears off with it and *FORCE* it into proper 4/4, and there would be an "everybody dance! ladies choice!" feel to it! heehehhhh.... would that be raping or abusing the song? No response required to my bit of madness. I'm (obviously) not a musician, but that little song just makes me wonder. Not sure why it sticks out. ;) thanks again!
