And a BIG BIG thanks once again to fellow JMDL'er and fellow covers nut Monica Cardinale for her contributions to this volume. And here it is: 1. Fabio Ranza & Elisabetta Zamberlan - Chinese Cafe 2. Fabio Ranza & Elisabetta Zamberlan - Ladies' Man 3. Fabio Ranza & Elisabetta Zamberlan - Moon At The Window 4. Fabio Ranza & Elisabetta Zamberlan - Solid Love 5. Fabio Ranza & Elisabetta Zamberlan - Be Cool 6. Fabio Ranza & Elisabetta Zamberlan - You Dream Flat Tires 7. Fabio Ranza & Elisabetta Zamberlan - Man To Man 8. Fabio Ranza & Elisabetta Zamberlan - Love: What an amazing beginning! We heard a couple of tracks from this Italian duo last month, this time they practically do the entire WTRF album, and his guitar and her vocals are wonderful throughout! 9. Ken Moule & The Full Score Orchestra - Both Sides Now: This is a pretty orchestral version with some very nice arrangement, particularly in the brass & woodwinds. Imported from Canada. 10. Meja - The Circle Game: A very recent recording by dance-pop ex-Legacy of Sound star Meja from Sweden. Gives it a nice samba-esque touch. 11. Zachary Scot Johnson - A Case Of You: One of our own! Zachary is a JMDL'er, and this comes from his CD released this year, Moment of Clarity. He sings and plays the piano, and does both with flair & beauty. Find out more about him at his website: _http://www.geocities.com/zacharyscot/_ (http://www.geocities.com/zacharyscot/) 12. Newdelphia Sax Quartet - Song For Sharon: Well, if I didn't tell you anything about this one, you'd probably figure it out anyway. A Saxophone Quartet from Philly, this instrumental is another 2004 release. 13. Lonnie Donegan - Both Sides Now: Like the late great John Peel, I expect the Brits to be more familiar with Skiffle pioneer Donegan. His claim to fame was a skiffle recording of "Rock Island Line", and also that he inspired a certain John Lennon to pick up a guitar in the 50's. His take on BSN is not as inspirational but still is a bit spirited. 14. Diana Krall - Black Crow: What more can be said about this one? Not just my favorite Joni cover of the year, but one of my favorite recordings of the year, period. Keep 'em coming, Diana. 15. Dawson - Goodbye Pork Pie Hat: Pianist-Composer Mike Dawson is based in Texas, and with his band New Rage offers up a fine sax-infused instrumental take on the Mingus classic. 16. The Whims - Raised On Robbery: The Whims are from Wheaton College in Norton, MA. This is an early recording, from the late 70's. Almost sounds like the Andrews Sisters. 17. Roger Saint-Denis & Dan Gibson - Both Sides Now: Joni covers in the Rain Forest! This 8-minute plus recording features a babbling brook, birds chirping, waterfalls, and other nature sounds behind an acoustic guitar & synthesizer. While it's very pretty & all that, all those rushing water noises makes me have to tinkle. 18. Frank Haunschild/Norbert Gottschalk - The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines: From Germany comes this guitar/bass/vocal combo, complete with lots of walking bass and scat. The guy's voice reminds me of Steve Miller (The Joker, Jet Airliner, Living In The USA, etc) 19. Goshima Yoshiko - Big Yellow Taxi: And our trip around the world ends in Japan with this recent cover of BYT, some nice acoustic work. Leave me the birds and the bees, Preeeeze! And that's it - 19 tracks, almost 75 minutes of Joni covers to add to our burgeoning collection! And I'll have a couple to give away, so don't touch that dial, and assuming you did, thanks for reading all the way to here. If we really love and respect someone, we must love and respect them for where they are NOW... Yesterday, Jeff and I celebrated (sorta- I didn't see him most of the day-lol) our second anniversary. I am truly blessed, despite some of the struggles I have within myself lately on other issues. It amazes me that i have heard so many women (and men for that matter) will talk about their potential spouse's hobby's or habits, or recreational activities and in the next breath say, "Well THAT'S gonna change once we get married!" Those loves of your life are who they are because of what they've experienced, dears. People aren't paint by numbers. If you want that, wait 'til androids are legal- then we'll talk. There are not a lot of things that I'd want to change about Jeff- well, one, but I guess I can deal with coffee breath mornings...lol. As for Joni, I too miss her 'commercial' creativity. But if she wants to paint, I say YOU GO GIRL! Slap those hairs off those brushes! Whip some canvas into a portrait! Steve >>> "Sherelle Smith" 10/29/04 09:17AM >>> (Snip) She has taught me that it is okay not to be perfect. She has taught me so much more than beautiful chords and haunting words. She has taught me how to be a better human being by being an imperfect one. I'm fighting back the tears on this one because I have never known anyone who has had the kind of courage to show herself in such a brutally honest manner. It's not that one puts her on a pedestal as that would negate the whole concept of what I am trying to say; but one cannot help but be awed and inspired by who she is and what she has done in her lifetime. For those of you who have had an opportunity to speak to her or reach her directly or indirectly, you are very fortunate indeed. You should savor and cherish that moment. This is a great lady because she made a choice a long time ago to dare to be different. By doing so, she has impacted so many other lives. She has dared to be fallible in a world where perfection is the only standard. She has allowed herself to feel joy and pain and she shared it with us. Anyone who listens to her music is privileged to get a glimpse into her real world. That's why people love her so. It's just plain admiration from one human being to another. So now? Now I would love Joni to enjoy the fruits of her labors. At this time of her life, if she feels like singing, I would like her to sing. If she feels like stepping back, then I want her to step back. I want her to do whatever makes her happy in her life right now. I want her to enjoy her grandchildren and enter into that "rest" I feel she deserves. I am so saturated and content with her life and her music. It's a good feeling..... Gen. Adrienne Clarkson at Rideau Hall. Mitchell, who grew up in Saskatoon, was named Companion of the Order -- the highest ranking. The Governor General told the crowd she remembered Mitchell from nearly 40 years ago -- first, as a folk singer in Toronto, and later on CBC's Take 30 news program, where she interviewed Mitchell. Addressing Mitchell, Clarkson said: "That was a long time ago, but we still look the same. Anybody would know us." The crowd laughed, and Mitchell smiled broadly at the Governor General. The Order of Canada, which was established in 1967, recognizes outstanding achievement and service in various fields of human endeavour. Mitchell, an acclaimed and influential recording artist of works such as Big Yellow Taxi and Both Sides Now, will soon turn 61. Her parents are both 92, so her run at middle-age is far from over, she says. Days before the Nov. 2 U.S. election, this veteran of the politically charged pop-culture wars of the 1960s knows a reporter will have questions about American politics. She won't say much, but then admits she strongly opposes the re-election of President George Bush. The Republican incumbent is "hideous, is undoing everything America stood for, behaving like a South American dictator," she said. But Bush will win because of his religious views, Mitchell adds. At this state of her life, however, Mitchell believes her performing career is over. "I've come to the point that I didn't want to do it any more," she said. Moreover, she deplores "the stupidity, the mass ignorance to the music business." These days Mitchell, who began adult life as an art student in Calgary, is mostly focused on painting. No dabbler, she has work in several noted collections and counts Van Gogh, Gaugin and Georgia O'Keefe as influences. Mitchell also remains a Canadian citizen and spends at least four months of the year in her seaside house near Vancouver. "It's small and wrapped by the sea, and I can be self-sufficient there" she says. Her Los Angeles home is a well-staffed villa. "I guess it's kind of two different lifestyles," she smiles. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Check out the new Yahoo! Where does this come from? Hey Mia, I'm glad you enjoyed it - I was surprised myself at all of them and sure that I probably missed a couple too! Another thing that crossed my mind and is maybe a valid discussion topic is all of the MOVIE imagery that Joni uses in her songs. She doesn't talk about the movies much but she sure uses many film references. Anyway, the lyric in question is from one of my favorite Joni songs, and sadly it's oft-forgotten because she only released it on MOA - "Love Or Money". Here's the lyric in context: All because that ghostly girl comes haunting Just out of reach outside his bed And she kicks the covers off his sleep For the clumsy things he said She commands his head she tries his sanity She demands his head tonight unknowingly Don't you love that line "she kicks the covers off his sleep, for the clumsy things he said" ? Great metaphor. Great song all around, and like I say, one of her most neglected, probably because it just doesn't get enough exposure - - if folks want to hear live Joni they turn to S&L as opposed to MOA. I don't think greedy is really the appropriate word, Nuriel. I think Joni is shrewd and smart enough to know when she's getting shafted and treated unfairly, and it seems to me that she's had her share of mistreatment. I think people in the business resent her for her wisdom in terms of protecting her intellectual property. If I had created the body of work that she had, damn straight I'd want everything I was due. That's not the same thing as greed, though. I originally thought that this epidemic of compilations she's dumped in the marketplace was a result of greed, but that really doesn't make any sense - she lives extremely comfortably to be sure, and it could be that these projects actually COST her $$. I think she just feels like those 80's/90's works weren't properly marketed. I would argue that they weren't properly produced (DED, CMIARS, and TTT that is, not the others) and suffer from filler, but that's a whole nuther thang. I was one of the speakers at the Joni Symposium. I got to meet her, and she really blew me away - - also had a chance to give her my dissertation, which is about her, and to have her sign a copy for me. Very thrilling, and thanks to Michael for a good summary of the day's events. I wanted to respond to the question of the relevance of an analytic approach to Joni's music. I am actually a performer and a composer, and yes, more recently, a scholar. For me it does a disservice to Joni's art to simply dismiss the technical components of her work as irrelevant, or secondary to the emotional or poetic content. These things all go hand in hand. A good music theorist is drawn to a work he or she loves, and sets about trying to come to terms with its magic. This involves considerations of context, poetic text, a whole bunch of "intangibles," and yes, specific consideration of the music's technical construction. It's true, theorists (and I generally don't consider myself a "theorist") can lose the forest for the trees, but a good analysis avoids doing just that. Joni is a strikingly innovative and original composer, and for a daylong symposium on her accomplishment to gloss over the nuts and bolts of some of her music making would seem to me to be a shame. The Monteal Gazette article poked fun of me for devoting a 45 minute discussion to a single song ("The Last Time I Saw Richard") and claiming not to have time to address the intro. (Actually it was a 20 minute talk, w/ 25 minutes of questions). I ask you this: is it really so inconceivalbe that there should be 20, or even 45 minutes worth of things to say about "The Last Time I Saw Richard"? Anyway, I hope I don't sound bitter or embattled or anything. I'm definitely not. Participating in the symposium was one of the most memorable and wonderful experiences of my life - meeting Joni was everything I imagined it would be and then some. best, Dan Sonenberg ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 01 Nov 2004 20:14:31 -0600 From: est86mlm@ameritech.net Subject: James Taylor FREE download of River Mags, Yes! I want to be able to play it ......whenever. I'm going to have to listen to Robert D, Jrs cover again......I think I only heard it once. I like being able to click on this Audio Preview while I'm online and listening to the entire song. Bob, Will you be able to put this on a CD cover? or will I have to learn how to 'really' download music!! ;-) Laura NP: you know.......it's still going. Laura, thanks so much for finding this! James' voice is gorgeous...what a wonderful interpretation of one of my very favourite Joni songs...has so much meaning for me. A great opportunity to sing praises to Robert Downey Jr's cover ... makes me cry every time. In a good way ;-) (Bob, is this on the first covers CD? How is it that James voice sounds as good as the first time I ever heard him! I about wore out my little speakers listening to this again and again. I didn't know the intro was "Good King Wenceslas". I've never heard the song title before ........thanks for the musical education. Hey, so was I the first one to find this for the Cover King? If that's true....now, I'm thrilled!! I do! Hey me too, Laura - but THAT shouldn't surprise anyone. And of course I've been a big JT fan forever (longer than Joni) so I was ecstatic to be able to get this so easily - a true whoo-hoo moment for me! James of course performed River on the TNT Tribute, but this arrangement is different...I love the way he intro's it with "Good King Wenceslas" as opposed to "Jingle Bells". Neat. I ask you > this: is it really so inconceivalbe that there > should be 20, or even 45 minutes > worth of things to say about "The Last Time I Saw > Richard"? > Hey, Dan. I'm surprised that anyone could spend ONLY 20 minutes (or 45 with questions) on that song, so more power to ya for being concise. The more I think about it, the more I realize just how fecking brilliant that woman is, lyrically, musically and every way else. I am sticking my tongue out and going pffft in a westerly direction, since my brother lives in Alberta and always sneered at me for being a fan of Joni. That was over 30 years ago, but I feel SO vindicated. This morning I was woken up by the clock radio, tuned to CBC and, as I was coming to, the announcer was talking about the difficulties of living under a curse, and how that curse becomes the focus of your life, such that, if/when the curse is lifted, you've lost whatever legendary qualities that curse once gave you. (Or at least, those are my words trying to describe what he was talking about.) He talked about the Boston Red Sox winning and how, having had the curse of not having won for so many years finally lifted, fans no longer have that legendary curse to talk about, complain about, or whatever. What do they do next? The announcer went from there to Brahms and how Brahms lived for something like 25 years in the shadow of Beethoven, under a sort of curse or writer's block that meant he could *never* finish a symphony. But after 25 years, he finally wrote one symphony, but he didn't stop there. He then wrote another, and another, and another. Beethoven is a tough act to follow that he might have stopped after one and been satisfied. That's how I feel about Joni - she is so gifted in both her words and her music that just about everyone else pales by comparison. I can think of some modern composers, songwriters, what you will, that may be able to write great music, but whose lyrics just don't measure up; others who write wonderful lyrics, but whose music is pretty standard stuff. Joni can do BOTH and make it look easy, but all of us know, it couldn't possibly be as easy as she makes it look. So many songwriters of today mention Joni as an influence. How many others are there that just don't even try, because they fear never being able to measure up? Thanks for stepping out of the shadows - Michael did say that there was at least one person who participated in the symposium that belongs to the jmdl, so it's great to know who the mystery man is! ===== Catherine Toronto - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We all live so close to that line, and so far from satisfaction ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 01 Nov 2004 22:37:44 -0600 From: Michael Paz Subject: Re: Joni Symposium Report (long) Thanks so much for the wonderful report!
