Some interviewer traced this song cycle from a world trip/vacation stance and she said oh, I can see that now... I think Les may have this in the archives.... Steve >>> 10/26/04 01:41PM >>> DJRD is getting some respect. McGill's Faculty of Music is recognizing Joni with a symposium. The first panel discussion is entitled "Exploding the Song Cycle: Joni Mitchells Don Juans Reckless Daughter". http://www.mcgill.ca/music/events/jmitchell_symposium/program/ Those of us who love DJRD will raise a glass tomorrow night. As for being NJC...not so! Joni appeared on Peel's "Top Gear" show back in 1968 (on my birthday, no less) and performed Night In The City & Cactus Tree with The John Cameron Orchestra behind her. Great stuff. I say impressively because I didn't expect JP's huge contribution to British music to be appreciated in the US, although it seems he cut his broadcasting teeth in America and this contributed to his getting his first break in British broadcasting. He died from a heart attack while in Peru and I would surmise that the altitude and his diabetes were contributing factors but what a great way to go after what he freely admitted was a very happy and fulfilled life doing what he loved doing ie broadcasting the music he loved, while enjoying a happy family life. In order to find a Joni link, I've just retrieved a vinyl copy of the June Tabor Peel Sessions which includes her recording of "The Fiddle and the Drum" which was released in 1986. On the front is a list of artists and groups who have recorded sessions for John Peel at Radio One. It's a huge list and the writing, which fills an LP cover, is tiny and may of the names I have never heard of. However it includes, among the better known, Undertones, Housemartins, Mark Almond, Atomic Rooster, Gary Numan, Frankie goes to Hollywood, Syd Barrett, Jeff Beck, Madness, Primal Scream, Cocteau Twins, T.Rex, Elvis Costello, Jimi Hendrix, Maddie Prior, Martin Carthy, Donovan, Tim Buckley, Incredible String Band, Roxy Music, John Cale, Country Joe MacDonald, Elton John, Fairport, Sandy Denny and, of course, David Bowie, amongst hundreds of others. Since 1986 there have been hundreds more, including Pulp and the Libertines who owe their success to exposure by JP. The respose to his sudden death has been remarkable - headline news in the press and on TV which is gratifying. He championed both FTR and C&S and then did what he always did - moved on to new music - I'm sure he would have hated the very thought of a whole discussion list for one artist whose best work is almost certainly behind her! He was always looking forward, always changing, not caring about critics or repeating the same old thing - a bit like Joni, in fact. When I heard the news it affected me more than any one death should, but he was truly one of a kind - an inspiration and a legend across the generations. I am not sure we will know his like again. Thank you John for introducing me to so much great music and for your compassion and humour. I will miss you. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Oct 2004 18:29:31 -0400 From: Subject: Re: Re: Giving DJRD its due Yo, After reading the site closely, I think this panel discussion may have had less to do with DJRD than I thought. Each of the titles for each discussion has a clever reference to Joni text. i.e. 10:15 "Exploding the Song Cycle: Joni Mitchells Don Juans Reckless Daughter" 11:00 Not the Same Situation: Joni Mitchells Work as a Sonic Document of Feminism 11:45 The Seer and the Seen: Self and Story in the Album Self-Portraits of Joni Mitchell 14:00 I Drew a Map of Canada: Joni Mitchells Constructions of Place Spreading Her Gorgeous Wings: Joni Mitchells Adoption of Jazz in The Last Time I Saw Richard 16:00 "'Blue' and the Female Songwriter" I hope someone was there and can give us a first-hand account. Lucky for me/us, that recording was also released on a "Best Of the Peel Sessions" CD and is safely included in our Covers series, as is her equally lovely studio version. Speaking of FAD, we have a new cover of that one coming out next Tuesday from A Perfect Circle. I'm anxious to hear what they do with it, I read an article today about this CD and the band stated that they tried to bring a different feel to all the anti-war songs they're covering on the disc. They did say, however, that they WERE doing it acapella like Joni. They also promise a slowed down/mournful rendition of "What's So Funny 'Bout Peace, Love etc" which I'm excited to hear. I would not have know about John Peel if not for the JMDL. Wowie wow Kate, this is a real coup & congratulations - I wish I had one o'them Star Trek transporters...Scotty, beam me to Santa Barbara! This is extremely significant because Tom (not George Hamilton IV) was the FIRST artist to cover a Joni song (in 1966!), Urge For Going as the B-side to a 45, "Sugar Babe" I believe but don't bet the ranch on that. But he was the first, you CAN bet on that bit o' trivia. Hope you get to do a duet with him - that would be pretty cool.
