So I've going to this Congregation for 12 years and read the same prayer book and today, I've just noticed a very small passage I hadn't paid attention to before. It goes like this (from bad memory and translated from french): The lion is powerful, so is the BRUTALITY of my passion to acquire material things ... A sheep trembling at the lion, king of animals, is like my INNOCENCE against my passions... The matter I'm made of gets pulled in four directions: ...., corruption, ........, false pretenses (sorry I forgot the other 2) and I will use every ARTIFICE to satisfy those pulsions. I think the message is clear: the 3 Great Stimulants must be fought within ourselves. Sounds like Joni went to services with Larry or what? Just kiddin', I'm sure she wrote the song on her own. Unrelated, but for the 1st time in 12 years I was called to recite the blessing before reading the Torah. A great source of inspiration, especially enhanced by the very place where this happened. Every year the synagogue holds the high holiday services in this famous auditorium rented for the occasion. So I was standing at the same spot where last year I saw Neil Young (Greendale) and Chuck Berry and Pat Metheny next June. Laurent NP. I believe Joni got the 3 great stimulants - artifice, brutality and innocence - from Nietzsche and I'm sure he wasn't operating in a vacuum. Joni has said (I think the last time I heard this was in the 2004-08-03 KPFK Interview) that cultures in decline turn to these three great stimulants - artifice, brutality and (the corruption of) innocence. I believe she has also, when asked her religion, stated that she's a Christian, Buddhist, Jewish whatever - the Jewish part being due to Larry. So odds are, she may indeed have gone to some services with him. ===== Catherine Toronto - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We all live so close to that line, and so far from satisfaction ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Sep 2004 12:00:49 EDT From: Smurfycopy@aol.com Subject: Re: Yom Kippour, The 3 Great Stimulants Catherine writes: << Joni got the 3 great stimulants - artifice, brutality and innocence - from Nietzsche and I'm sure he wasn't operating in a vacuum. >> Ha! It mirrors exactly what I wrote more than 2 years ago. On June 02, 2002, I said, >Joni's secret daughter was revealed to the world in an Associated Press story on March 20, 1997. Perhaps the reunion brought a resolution to the anguish of giving up her daughter, Kelly/Kilauren. Perhaps she was relieved of hiding from her mother. Pain-free, her interest in writing evaporated. Who needs catharsis if you don't have a problem? Joni has often said, I sing my sorrow and I paint my joy. Here is the proof.> To Robert Hilburn, Joni recently said, >"In some ways, my gift for music and writing was born out of tragedy, really, and loss," she says softly. "When my daughter returned to me, the gift kind of went with it. The songwriting was almost like something I did while I was waiting for my daughter to come back."> If only I could pick stocks... Our SK wonder said, >I've done 16 records hearing people say, 'You're not as > > good as you used to be.' Finally, I said, 'OK, I agree with you.'> I guess she reads her reviews but doesn't remember all of them. She remembers the knocks for "The Windfall" but not the praise for "Cherokee Louise" on the same album! I think she has a depressive side. Here's the person who wrote "The Last Time I Saw Richard", right? I love stuff like that because I'm depressive too. Because it matches how I feel, I think it's deep and honest and insightful. (My co-worker listened to BLUE once and said "It's just too sad, Jim.") Joni's sarcastic side is saying 'OK, I agree with you.' She's being strong in front of The Press. In the US, we say, "The best defense is a strong offense." She implies that she stopped writing because we don't appreciate her new songs. We know better because she confided to Kakki and Steven that she'd rather Write but it's not coming. She's been a painter since middle school. As a late bloomer in songwriting, I think she had some success stories. (Mega understatement. We love you, Joni.) She's earned her retirement. On the other hand, I wish Crosby would ask her for help again, and fax some ideas into that kitchen in Bel Air. She needs a challenge. This article tells how Joni and Jimi both had shows in Ottawa in March 1968. After his show, Jimi found his way to the coffee house where Joni was playing, and recorded the show with his tape recorder. The tape has never surfaced, as far as I know, unless he gave it to Joni and she has it. Anyway, there was a party afterwards, and Joni and Jimi reportedly left together. The kiss in question took place the following morning. I wonder if Joni has ever commented on their meeting. Here's the link, and entries from Jimi's diary: http://www.jmdl.com/articles/view.cfm?id=733 March 19 Arrived in Ottawa. Beautiful hotel. Strange people ... Beautiful dinner. Talks with Joni Mitchell on the phone. I think I'll record her tonight with my excellent tape recorder (knock on wood). Hmmm ... can't find any wood ... everything's plastic. Beautiful view. Marvellous sound on first show. Good on second. Good recording. Went down to little club to see Joni, fantastic girl with heaven words. We all got to party. OK, millions of girls. Listen to tape and smoked up at hotel. March 20 We left Ottawa City today. I kissed Joni goodbye, slept in the car awhile. Stopped at a highway diner. The real thing. I mean a real one just like in the movies. Mitch and I discuss our plans for movie. Slight disagreement here and there but it will soon be straighten out. Went to a very bad, bad, bad tasting restaurant. Thugs follo us. They probably was scared, couldn't figure us out. Me with my Indian hat and Mexican moustach, Mitch with his fairy tale jacket and Noel with his leopard band hat and accent. G'nite all.
