Not sure if there are 'versions' of PWWAM . Just a regular copy I picked up at one of the big stores and noticed Joni's right hand was smokeless and quite unghoulishly so, I might add. Assumed that it was deemed un pc. and not a positive image; so producer, agency, nanny police, heck knows who decided to try their hand at Photo Shop. I can't imagine Joni had a say in that. Well, there are. There are different versions because of the color systems (NTSC in the US, PAL in Europe). The DVD also seems to come in different formats, i.e. without and with surround sound/DTS. Then the DVD's are also published with different region codes (1, 2). I just checked several Amazon websites and found the cigarette cover here http://images-eu.amazon.com/images/P/B00004D0FY.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg which is valid for the German and British DVD. In the US, there is a new widescreen edition with DTS Surround Sound which indeed has the cigarette removed and the hand repainted: http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0002CTT44.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg I can hardly believe that they did this... moni ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Sep 2004 15:30:17 +0100 From: "willytheshake100" Subject: Re: pwwam Re PWWAM, Moni wrote: > I just checked several Amazon websites and found the cigarette cover here which is valid for the German and British DVD. > In the US, there is a new widescreen edition with DTS Surround Sound which indeed has the cigarette removed and the hand repainted. Maybe it's been standardised coz I have the cigaretteless version PALayable in the UK. 4:3 screen format. Dunno but you but I actually don't like watching wide screen as the majority of programmes simply stretch the picture not actually widen the view. Why? Changes like that are made sometimes if retailers ask for it or if they receive complaints. And it looks like they changed distributors, at least in the US and took that opportunity to rerelease it with the cig removed. It's not a minor decision that Joni wouldn't be a part of unless she didn't want to be. It may have even been her choice. > I can't imagine Joni had a say in that. I can't imagine that she didn't. Artists a fraction of her stature have contractual approval of all of their packaging and it just wouldn't be worth it for the new distributor, (a division of Sony where she has a publishing deal) to do it when they don't even own the art and then have to change it again if she was angry. It would be too expensive and not worth the risk. Bob NP: Pat Metheny, "Midwestern Nights Dream" (thanks to Boston Jim!) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 11 Sep 2004 12:56:52 +1200 From: "hell" Subject: kd lang on Rove Live! some JC Rove Live! is an Australian talk-show hosted by Rove McManus, and always entertaining. Last night he talked to kd lang about her latest album, "Hymns from the 49th Parallel". There was some Joni-content early on, but also some amusing other bits later (which I've also transcribed) and an explanation for why she doesn't wear shoes on stage! The conversation started out discussing the album: Rove: The plan for this was to be a Canadian songbook, wasn't it? kd: Yes Rove: Do you feel you've achieved that? kd: I think so. There's such amazing Canadian song-writers. So there's songs from Joni Mitchell and Neil Young and Leonard Cohen... And a lot of times, poeple don't realise they're Canadian. Rove: Do you feel pressure when you're performing someone's song who you've admired for so long? kd: It's ominous to cover someone like Joni Mitchell, because you know, she's basically a goddess to any singer-songwriter in the last 30 years. Yeah. But at the same time, they're such incredible songs that it's actually quite easy to get into them because the lyrics and melodies are so beautiful. Joni content ends here, for those Joni-only people! They then discussed her tour with Tony Bennett, and kd said they used to have long discussions about politics. Then the discussion moved on to a recent road-trip kd took up the West Coast of the US from Los Angeles to Vancouver. Rove: Now are there any interesting sites along the way? Like if you do a long strip of road in Australia, especially along the East Coast, we have big items - big novelty items. We've got a big pineapple and a big banana. Don't look at me confused, because I'm a little worried that after all the time you've been here, you've yet to see one of our novelty items! kd: I haven't seen the big banana. Rove: (tries to contain himself, and not laugh) kd: I set you up so good! Rove: That was like I just lobbed it to you, and you went "SMASH"! Rove: But is there any like interesting or amusing sites along the way or do you just stop and see beaches and all that kind of stuff? kd: You know, on the West Coast there's not so many big plastic fruit. No, it's just mostly coastline. They then moved on to talk about the timing of the trip... Rove: And was this recently? Was this around the time of the Olympics? Because I was interested to know whether you watched the Olympics? kd: I did manage to watch the girls in bikinis playing volleyball... Rove: Because that's what you wanted to do when you were younger, wasn't it? kd: Watch girls play volleyball in bikinis? Rove: "SMASH"! The conversation then moved on to other sports, including synchronised swimming, and the two performed an impromptu routine from their chairs! The final topic was kd touring with an orchestra, and Rove asked if the members of the orchestras minded kd performing in bare feet. She said she didn't know, but then went on to say: kd: It's just kind of comfortable to be on stage in bare feet, and you can feel the vibes through the stage. Do you want to know the truth? The truth is that I don't wear leather and it is so hard to find plastic shoes - it's insanely difficult to find plastic shoes! Rove suggested she by some rubber thongs (or flip-flops) while in Australia! Not much Joni content, but it was a very entertaining interview, all the same!
