Thanks to all of you at Jonifest 2004 for your friendship and your music from a Jonifest first-timer! Wow! What a cool group of immensely talented musicians and wonderful down -to - -earth folks. From the main evening performances, to the Song Circle, to the Pool Room, to the Barn I was in awe of the talent and thankful for all the music that was shared. To date, I haven't yet tried any of Joni's alternate tunings, but with the inspiration from her and all of you, I have decided that it is something I have to try. If the tab website performance drops it may be because I'm downloading a bunch of files ;-). I know I am a mediocre musician, but all of you made me feel just as welcome as anyone else that was there and that was very much appreciated. Janine and I both had a great time! I wish you all much happiness and hope to cross paths in the future, Dan ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 01 Sep 2004 08:17:52 -0400 From: Claud9 Subject: Re: JMDL Digest V2004 #364 Yes, Victor. I...absolutely...love...Dan...Fogelberg!!!! To hear that Joni was an influence on him warms my heart. I was introduced to him by two college roomates who hosted me until I could get my own place in Los Angeles. My school, Immaculate Heart College had no dorms so we had to find apartments. The Le-Le Pagoda as they called it were two girls from the Chicago area who were big fans of Dan Fogelberg's. They showed me the his picture on the album "Souvenirs" and then played the title song. I thought I had died and gone to heaven it was so beautiful!!!! I was first introduced to Joni at the same time. Through the years, I have felt a similar connection to his music as I have to Joni's and I never knew why exactly. Now I do. I do remember feeling that he was as lovelorn and love torn as Joni. I just thought it was a coincidence. Yes, I bought a CD some years back with him and Tim Wiseberg (sp?) and it was nothing that I expected. I didn't care for it but I still have it. Dan took me on a musical and emotional journey just like Joni. Even thinking about it takes me back. I wonder if he is still with Irving Azoff? I have a coworker who just joined their team as a manager almost a year ago and he loves it. Thank you for sharing this Dan Fogelberg/Joni Mitchell thread. You bring back some good memories. Lindsay wrote: Well, I've now read the bio on Dan, and his career pretty much parallels Joni's and she is mentioned several times in his bio as being an influence (and Russell emailed me she sang backup on Nexus on his album "The Innocent Age." (I probably have that in my collection of albums and I don't know why that fact escaped me. Thanks, Russle!) Some examples: He majored in art and then turned to music. He came to LA in the early '70s w/his manager Irving Azoff who set up an office across the street from David Geffen who had signed Joni by that point. He had Graham Nash and members of the Eagles, etc. sing backup on his first album and he worked with Joe Walsh. He lived on Lookout Mountain in Laurel Canyon for a year and a half. Cites Joni as an influence for changing stream and writing less first-person, more third-person songs (i.e., Hissing) for "Windows & Walls" and says like Joni he was lambasted for it. Has a cabin on an island in Maine instead of British Columbia. He did foray off into bluegrass (and that's where he lost me) whereas Joni went into jazz, and he doesn't seem to smoke like a chimney. But I thought it was pretty interesting. I'll tell you, if there *was* something going on romantically between them, I wouldn't blame her. He's almost as good-looking as Bob Muller ... ; ) Lindsay _________________________________________________________________ Check out Election 2004 for up-to-date election news, plus voter tools and more! http://special.msn.com/msn/election2004.armx ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 01 Sep 2004 15:28:00 -0400 From: Jerry Notaro Subject: Re: Joni & Dan The only Joni-Dan > work I know of was Joni singing back-up on one of Dan's songs - someone help > me name it - it was on a double LP that was released at the height of his > popularity. Fogelberg had an outstanding hat trick in the 70's with "Souvenirs-Captured Angel-Netherlands", three gorgeous & flawless records." Well, true about his 70s hat trick, although some of "Souvenirs" provides me somewhat painful flashbacks to adolescence. I was probably one of the three people who bought "Twin Sons of Different Mothers." I still like it today. Some other notes about vocals include his having backed up the Eagles on several tracks and for me, most notably having provided the beautifully harmonized answer phrases to Jackson Browne's lead vocal on "The Late Show" (one of Browne's best compositions, IMHO). I credit his "Home Free" as having been one of the charms I employed to win my wife's affections. I truly hope he beats his challenge.
