Or with a lesbian singing as a straight person or a gay man singing straight, and so on. If you're singing a song that someone else wrote, you become an actor and the song is your role. If you're a good actor/singer, then people should be able to hear you in the role without any problem. Just my opinion. I agree with you about the Counting Crows version of BYT. They didn't need to change the words to "took my girl away". It loses the rhyme that way anyway. And "old man" can refer to father as well. ===== Catherine Toronto - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We all live so close to that line, and so far from satisfaction ______________________________________________________________________ Post your free ad now! http://personals.yahoo.ca ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Aug 2004 10:38:17 -0400 (EDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: k. d.'s Joni covers - --- SCJoniGuy@aol.com wrote: > **Again I so agree... a stoooopid line, using it is > not only vague its lazy > writing... & why mess with the master? As far as changing the words of the master (mistress?), I agree to a point, except that Joni has done it herself. A quick and obvious example - "strains of [whoever is convenient at the time] coming through the [optional] [smoke and the something-or-other] trees." I've volunteered to do the html for the jmdl site and had deleted some of these without thinking about it. And to any who sent a post to Ashara to be read at fest, be assured that was done and greatly appreciated - however, could y'all send a copy of that post to me as well? (Ashara, if you're listening and you've got 'em, maybe you could forward them all to me?) To anyone who is joni-only, sorry for the bandwidth, but wanted to make sure this hit anyone who might have attended, or sent greetings, who might be joni-only. Merci. Now me: Having been privileged to withness Les Ross' performance at a past Jonifest, I would have to say that his version of The Magdalene Laundries is much more soulful than even Joni's. Mags! Wow! Wowie!!! I was reading this and it took a moment to sink in! Sorry that I am just catching up on digests. I had heard different things like Kilauren and Joni were estranged so my heart is really warmed to read your story. Pleasant journeys on your Heijeira and please tell us how it all went when you return home!!!! Love, Sherelle Mags wrote: oh geeze Michael, I guess it's time to confess about what is really going on. Now, I realize that you aren't even there (no pun intended ;-) as you are on your way to the Full Moon resort in the Catskills. As you have no doubt heard through the grapevine, I've been travelling in some vehicle across the Canadian landscape for nearly three months now. It's been a life long dream and for that I am eternally grateful. Whilst on my hejira, I travelled to Saskatoon and met up with Kilauren and Joni in a book store downtown. Of course I tried my best to not react (inside I was screeching (hi Wally)......OMG it's really JONI !!!!!! I did my best to pull myself together so I could decide what to do. I decided, okay, chance of a life time. I said hello to Kilauren first and I was greeted with that famous smile. All of a sudden I found myself engaged in conversation with the two of them as if I had known them all my life. As it has been said before, Joni is gracious and as down to earth as everyone says. She quickly put me at ease and we were able to have the most "normal" and wonderful conversation. I mentioned that I met someone from her past in a little bar here in town at the beginning of the summer, and she just smiled. We spoke at length about the Joni Fest and while she is touched that we Jmdlers do the song and celebration thing in her honour, she feels that "being there" might be a little too overwhelming. Joni was intrigued to know that hre fans travel from all over the world to share in a magical weekend in the Catskill Mountains at the Full Moon resort. A wonderful group of people who truly care about one another, who spend an entire year planning and looking forward to this special gathering in her name. You should have seen the look on her face as I told her that we work so hard to represent and live into her spirit with a view to honouring her and her work. We were all a little misty eyed; her green eyes glowing, and a slow smile spread across her face. Kilauren gushed with pride. And then, a long sigh. At that point, Joni turned her head aside to compose herself I suppose. And all the while, there's Kilauren, beautiful sparkly eyes, smiling and speaking in a voice that is SO much like Joni herself, it is astounding!! Joni and Kilauren were like two giggly girls on a shopping spree...it was fantastic!!! Joni talked about her new projects and and it was so interesting to hear her view of things in the music industry and beyond. . Joni is enjoying time with the grandbabies, and Kilauren of course...and she says that things have mellowed out immensely with Myrtle...so all seems to be well in her world. Joni is enjoying her painting and continues to poke fun at the music industry..and said that her words often get so twisted out of proportion, but she just laughs it all away. A moment in time that I will long remember... thrilled to the marrow that I was even in the same room. I've only seen Joni in concert twice in my entire life, both times, I wasnt close enough to "see" her for myself, so it was such a thrill. I guess that's about all I have to say . I wanted to wait until the Festers were well on their way as to not rain on the parade of excitement. The only thing I really wish is that it was in fact April the first, because this little story is all a fabrication ;-) love and joy to all of those who are there, and to the rest who, like me, could not attend this year, we are watchiing it from the wings. Our weekend, wherever we are, and whomever we may be with, will be just as special. We will live into all of our very own Joni moments and memories as we share in this wondrous place I like to think of as my Joni family. love, Mags. _________________________________________________________________ Get ready for school! Thanks to all of you at Jonifest 2004 for your friendship and your music from a Jonifest first-timer! Wow! What a cool group of immensely talented musicians and wonderful down -to - -earth folks. From the main evening performances, to the Song Circle, to the Pool Room, to the Barn I was in awe of the talent and thankful for all the music that was shared. To date, I haven't yet tried any of Joni's alternate tunings, but with the inspiration from her and all of you, I have decided that it is something I have to try. If the tab website performance drops it may be because I'm downloading a bunch of files ;-). I know I am a mediocre musician, but all of you made me feel just as welcome as anyone else that was there and that was very much appreciated. Janine and I both had a great time! I wish you all much happiness and hope to cross paths in the future, Dan ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Aug 2004 17:06:58 -0700 From: Lindsay Moon Subject: Dan Fogelberg SJC Well, I've now read the bio on Dan, and his career pretty much parallels Joni's and she is mentioned several times in his bio as being an influence (and Russell emailed me she sang backup on Nexus on his album "The Innocent Age." (I probably have that in my collection of albums and I don't know why that fact escaped me. Thanks, Russle!) Some examples: He majored in art and then turned to music. He came to LA in the early '70s w/his manager Irving Azoff who set up an office across the street from David Geffen who had signed Joni by that point. He had Graham Nash and members of the Eagles, etc. sing backup on his first album and he worked with Joe Walsh. He lived on Lookout Mountain in Laurel Canyon for a year and a half. Cites Joni as an influence for changing stream and writing less first-person, more third-person songs (i.e., Hissing) for "Windows & Walls" and says like Joni he was lambasted for it. Has a cabin on an island in Maine instead of British Columbia. He did foray off into bluegrass (and that's where he lost me) whereas Joni went into jazz, and he doesn't seem to smoke like a chimney. But I thought it was pretty interesting. I'll tell you, if there *was* something going on romantically between them, I wouldn't blame her. Wow - thanks for lifting my spirits on a melancholy day, Lindsay - woo-hoo! Melancholy because I took the day off work to move my one and only child into his college dorm, and then made the drive home leaving him behind. :~( But I'm excited for him, it's a GREAT school and he's gonna have a great time. And he's only half an hour away - yippee! I thought about 'The Circle Game' all day, and didn't even cry until I got home. But anyway, what was the topic? Oh yeah, Fogelberg....true that Joni sings a very nice coda vocal on "Nexus", I'm also pretty sure that Dan the man is part of "The Lookout Mountain United Downstairs Choir" on The same Circle Game that was in my head all day. Fogelberg had an outstanding hat trick in the 70's with "Souvenirs-Captured Angel-Netherlands", three gorgeous & flawless records. Like Joni he played a bunch of different instruments and did the artwork as well. Thanks again for making my day - a nice compliment from a California blonde who's no slouch in the looks department herself! The only Joni-Dan work I know of was Joni singing back-up on one of Dan's songs - someone help me name it - it was on a double LP that was released at the height of his popularity. The song has a Native American sort of feel, if I recall correctly. My vague memory says the song was called "Nexus" but I can't remember the name of the album.
