Only a few of her albums seem to be available in the US. I recommend trying out anything that is sung in her own language, not English, i.e. stuff like "Gula Gula".<< I'm never one to let a Jan Garbarek mention go to waste so if you want to listen to Mari Boine, check out Garbarek's "12 Moons". This has Eberhard Weber on Bass too, (big bonus). And if you like great singing of a different type, check out Garbarek and The Hilliard Ensemble's 'Officium'. mike in bcn PS, I used to have 'Gula Gula' but now I cannot remember which CD it was on. I think it's a gorgeous video with Joni dancing with Seal so intimately, just wonderful. There is a bit near the end where she's kneeing down and she drops her head - I love that, it describes in that simple image what she's feeling, what the song is, where she's at. Watch it! I did, and it is gorgeous! Very elegant, like Joni. First time I've seen this video. There were lots of beautiful images, but one part I especially liked was Joni standing and moving her hips back and forth, which is some sexy dancing. Looks like a cha-cha-cha move. I've seen her do that before but don't remember where, maybe in a concert, so it seems distinctly "Joni". And I love the open golden undefined space she and Seal are in. The song sounds pretty good too. Thanks very much, Jamie, for letting us know about this. Debra Shea ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Aug 2004 11:51:00 -0500 From: "Steven Polifka" Subject: Joni and the Rock Hall of Fame Hello all, Since I couldn't make it to the fest this year, I managed to take a short trip to Cleveland. (Alas, no Drew Carey...) Of course, I had to go to the R&R HoF, eager to see what (if anything) they had of Joni's to share with the world. With Jeff in tow (lol- he graciously took me since a suburb of Akron is his hometown) we stepped into this absolutely spectacular modern glass/metal/futuristic building with cars and rock performance stage props hanging from the sealing. After the 20 (yikes) dollars to get into the place, I eagerly asked where I might find the Joni Mitchell display. The young woman said, "She might be in the 'San Francisco' area, although I don't think we have much on her..." The main museum floor is circular, with little hallways jutting inward, usually focused on one star, Like Jimmy Hendrix or Elvis. The other floors are smaller, about half the main floor, with different themes and focuses. There are also several little theatres with different presentations going on. One is dedicated to Hendrix. There were several kiosks focused on the inductees, and several on the music of the '500 most influential songs'. Joni was listed under 'singer/songwriter', and the focus was her influences, citing Judy Collins and Stevie Wonder by her own quotes. Joni was quoted as saying that she mimiced Judy and Baez in the beginning, and that Stevie Wonders' lp from '73 was a musical influence- similar to what she did on C & S. ( They had a SW sample and it did indeed sound like her arrangements on C&S.) With the music kiosk, Help Me was cited as her only bonafide hit, and you could listen to the entire song. We eventually found her autograph, all lit up on a backlit wall in the dark of some theatre. To me it looked 3-dimensional. Jeff thought it was etched in plexiglass. While we did not stay for any of the films, as we walked out, a snippet of Joni from the 'Pink Dress Concert' playing A Case of You finished the presentation. How fitting, I thought. Among the numerous great props and costumes were costumes by Devo, Tina Turner's outfits, Prince, Elton John and too many others to mention. Did you know that one of the Rolling Stones (I forget which) played mountain dulcimer on 3 early Stones songs? His dulcimer was in a case with other Stones memorabilia. Of all the displays we saw, our fave was the Mary Wilson Supreme Collection- on the fourth floor. She saved all her costumes and memorabilia- it was FABULOUS!!! (LOL!) And there was a loaf of the Supremes White Bread- I kid you not! We laughed about that one for a while... Finally, We found the California area, with a few Joni Items fitted in neatly next to and with CSN&Y. All of the items were from Joel Bernstein's private collection. They included: A black and white pic (about 8 by 10) of Joni playing the dulcimer which I have never seen before... (Very nice pic! Her hair was real long and it looked like she was sitting on a porch infront of a house.) A hand-written For the Roses credit sheet where she had crossed out her own musicianship credits. It looked like she was editing them. (Since there are no camera's allowed, I couldn't document any of this.) :-( An original marker drawing in an acrylic frame (era early 70's...) The hand-written first for lines of My Old Man written on a hotel letterhead tablet... (Forgot what hotel- sorry!) Not much indeed... Fast forward to the souvenier section. Album covers with the albums displayed in top - for a mear $85 lacked any Joni amidst the numerous racks. There was the usual tee shirts, mugs, and dreck. Some fun stuff, too. DVD's, CD's and such. And yes, they had every Joni CD (save Misses), and two of her dvd's (PWWAM, and S&L)! I broke down and purchased a cool bass clef T and a 45 spacer pin. While the museum was certainly full of surprises, I was very disappointed that Britney had 2 outfits on display. (What the feck does she have to do with R& R?) While Joni had 4 little items... So how does the museum get articles for their displays? Do people offer them up? Does the Museum itself hunt for them? While Joni herself isn't impressed with the R& R HoF, all I can say is a little advertising couldn't hurt... Will miss you at the fest, Steve ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Aug 2004 10:24:22 +0100 From: Garret Subject: re: How Do You Stop Video Thanks for posting this link jamie! most timely as i'v finally done something (don't really know what) that makes AOl work well and lets me listen to music / see videos etc online, and to donwload programmes. yay!! Now, I realize that you aren't even there (no pun intended ;-) as you are on your way to the Full Moon resort in the Catskills. As you have no doubt heard through the grapevine, I've been travelling in some vehicle across the Canadian landscape for nearly three months now. It's been a life long dream and for that I am eternally grateful. Whilst on my hejira, I travelled to Saskatoon and met up with Kilauren and Joni in a book store downtown. Of course I tried my best to not react (inside I was screeching (hi Wally)......OMG it's really JONI !!!!!! I did my best to pull myself together so I could decide what to do. I decided, okay, chance of a life time. I said hello to Kilauren first and I was greeted with that famous smile. All of a sudden I found myself engaged in conversation with the two of them as if I had known them all my life. As it has been said before, Joni is gracious and as down to earth as everyone says. She quickly put me at ease and we were able to have the most "normal" and wonderful conversation. I mentioned that I met someone from her past in a little bar here in town at the beginning of the summer, and she just smiled. We spoke at length about the Joni Fest and while she is touched that we Jmdlers do the song and celebration thing in her honour, she feels that "being there" might be a little too overwhelming. Joni was intrigued to know that hre fans travel from all over the world to share in a magical weekend in the Catskill Mountains at the Full Moon resort. A wonderful group of people who truly care about one another, who spend an entire year planning and looking forward to this special gathering in her name. You should have seen the look on her face as I told her that we work so hard to represent and live into her spirit with a view to honouring her and her work. We were all a little misty eyed; her green eyes glowing, and a slow smile spread across her face. Kilauren gushed with pride. And then, a long sigh. At that point, Joni turned her head aside to compose herself I suppose. And all the while, there's Kilauren, beautiful sparkly eyes, smiling and speaking in a voice that is SO much like Joni herself, it is astounding!! Joni and Kilauren were like two giggly girls on a shopping spree...it was fantastic!!! Joni talked about her new projects and and it was so interesting to hear her view of things in the music industry and beyond. . Joni is enjoying time with the grandbabies, and Kilauren of course...and she says that things have mellowed out immensely with Myrtle...so all seems to be well in her world. Joni is enjoying her painting and continues to poke fun at the music industry..and said that her words often get so twisted out of proportion, but she just laughs it all away. A moment in time that I will long remember... thrilled to the marrow that I was even in the same room. I've only seen Joni in concert twice in my entire life, both times, I wasnt close enough to "see" her for myself, so it was such a thrill. I guess that's about all I have to say . I wanted to wait until the Festers were well on their way as to not rain on the parade of excitement. The only thing I really wish is that it was in fact April the first, because this little story is all a fabrication ;-) love and joy to all of those who are there, and to the rest who, like me, could not attend this year, we are watchiing it from the wings. Our weekend, wherever we are, and whomever we may be with, will be just as special. We will live into all of our very own Joni moments and memories as we share in this wondrous place I like to think of as my Joni family. love, Mags. I've lost count of how many times I've watched this video (from the Launch website, which has a lot of video treasures - - Stevie Nicks and CSN fans might want to check it out!) and I've found it's a great way to lift the spirits!
