Just to see the colorful makeup on the women! I get such a kick out of it. If their makeup (and clothing) were any brighter, it might burn thru my retina, LOL! Thanks for sharing that Crosby quote, Deb. Joni always looked so much younger than her true age without the makeup; but with the makeup, she always looked so much older than her true age. Perhaps with the heavier makeup, she was trying to portray herself as an experienced artist with much wisdom, and that way the music industry would take her seriously. She appeared to be a tougher cookie then. When she lost the makeup along side falling in with the hippie aesthetic of the time, I think that during the Graham Nash years, Joni may have been trying to reveal a more sweet and innocent version of herself, perhaps keeping in line with how Nash felt about her. (She was also making it to the bigger stages then and could hide behind the sweetness so people would protect her rather than hurt her.) I think that being painted into such a corner left her feeling restricted and unable to grow, which possibly contributed to her leaving Nash and later having her little Shamanic conversion. Just my .02 cents. I really hope Myrtle saved this stuff! Although, I've seen a picture somewhere on the JMDL (or maybe it was the WOHAM video) of young Joni playing her ukelele. But it's not the same as hearing and watching! Catherine wrote: <> I just saw one of these at a music store recently! They are cute, and I watched some guy pick one up and he was really jamming out. I was pretty amazed! I wanted to try it, but it's so embarrassing to follow an act of such talent! Speaking of obscure instruments, has anyone ever seen or played a guitjo? (aka banjitar) It's a cross between a guitar and banjo. I heard Neil play it on "For The Turnstyles." It has such a cool hippy/country/folk sound to it. I was lucky to pick up BSN when it was first published, for Miranda, and ended up keeping it for myself ;-) Hey, Ive been sending her my entire Joni CD collection, with a letter accompanying each one to fill in the pieces of my life at the time I first listened to that particular CD. It's been a wonderful journey. Ive been away from Joni music of late, and will return soon no doubt. In the meantime, Ive borrowed some CDs from the library (such a deal ;) , and the latest one I highly recommend is Jann Arden's "Love is the only soldier". Clever packaging too. She's a solid lyricist, has a great voice and fabulous sense of humour. She is Canadian after all, eh? (hi Ashara) Mags, checking in je me souviens New and Improved Yahoo! I have been a UKE freak for over 10 years now, and own several, play badly. My buddy Sean Anderson is one of the originators of this wonderful film. He lives next door to me in Lexington KY and is a good bud. Rock that Uke is an amazing little film, and if anyone wants to see it, or show it at a film fest, please contact me anytime. He plays this thing all over the country. Its wonderful. Nyrogrl - -- Jody L. If you'd like one (or 10, or 30) please send a SASE that will fit a program that is 8 1/2 inches by 5 1/2 inches and enough postage to cover the amount you are asking for and just send a note with it saying "Both Sides Now programs" and the number of programs you'd like. I think Joni likes a little touch of glamour every now and then. Remember: She don't like my kick-pleat skirt She don't like my eyelids painted green She don't like me staying out late in my high-heel shoes Living for that rock and roll dancing scene and also But even on the scuffle the cleaner's press was in my jeans And any eye for detail caught a little lace along the seams But she ultimately concludes: The streets were never really mine Not mine, not mine these glamour gowns Personally, I've never liked seeing her in full makeup. It makes her look hard somehow. Her face is so naturally interesting. Certainly the cheekbones don't need rouge to emphasize them. She has very full lips and they are only exaggerated by the bright red lipstick she usually wears. And the eyes need nothing. They are deep-set, large and quite beautiful without painting the lids green or any other color. The fresh-faced hippy girl look was quite becoming to her. Just my opinion.
