While it's a wonderful album and a recent favorite, I'm not talking about the music, the lyrics, or the songs as a whole. All I am commenting on are the octaves in her voice. This whole album blows my mind, but I'm going to point out what I mean in a few songs: Take "Banquet" for example, when she sings "logs and sails, and shell oil pails". Or in Barangrill" during the last line "And you even forget to ask (beautiful vocal lift there), Hey' Where's Barangrill?". One last example: in "Lesson in Survival", when she sings "You need to believe in something (octaves trickle downward) once I could in our love", I just want to be a leaf floating down from one of the trees in that forest she's in on the album cover. Hi Wes, as others have said there are certainly an endless supply of Joni's golden vocal moments. In my mind her finest hour is "Sweet Sucker Dance" from Mingus. She effortlessly makes some tricky jazz intervals with very little melodic guidance, just pure brilliance. Barring that one track, I'd nominate C&S as her best vocal work for an entire album. It's so awesome that she makes it seem effortless, and anybody who's tried to sing "Help Me" (which is a lot of us I would imagine) would confirm that that is not the case. I absolutely love Joni's octaves on FTR. Those passages you picked out are real gems! I find that "Lesson in Survival" and "Ludwig's Tune" are so beautiful and fun to sing acapella style. I love to sing these two when I'm in the shower or in my car (alone, obviously, lol). It's fun to sing up and down the octaves with all the key changes, etc.. and even more challenging when you don't have the piano chords to follow. It's like aerobics for the brain. :) But I really struggle with that "show 'em you won't *expire*" part. Joni is amazing! There are two other songs that I also like to sing this way to, (but not from FTR, tho'). They are "Court and Spark" and "The Same Situation." It seems as though these two songs are carryovers from FTR. And "The Last Time I Saw Richard" from Blue seems very FTR'ish to me! I love the way she sings "dark cafe days." The "ca" is accented loudly but the "fe" is quiet, and and she does the same wicked decrescendo thing with "days." It has a playful obnoxious/in your face kind of feel that I just adore! Gosh, maybe Joni should put out another compilations CD. Imagine "Lesson in Survival," "Barangril," "Banquet," "Ludwig's Tune," "Court and Spark," "The Same Situation," and "The Last Time I Saw Richard" all on one CD. Oh, and "Blue" too.
