Joni Mitchell 1971 Hi Doug, I recently bought Joni's Beginning of Survival. There are several songs on it I had not heard before. They are so timely even though they were not written more recently. I suppose they are "ornery" in a sense. But, to listen to them, just like a lot of Joni's songs over the years, I feel uplifted because of the way they are sung and put together. I see this album as similar to looking at a beautiful painting of "bad" weather. There is something beyond the turmoil, something beautiful which Joni captures and relays. Her songs on this album are rather heavy but light all at the same time. In her honesty, she says what needs to be heard, and in her beauty, she conveys hope. I really love this album! Ya'll might have all of her albums, but I don't. And, this album points me in the direction of other albums I now know exist and will eventually get. I so enjoyed watching this. Joni looks so relaxed and if she is really enjoying herself. Someone recently opined that Joni is really a solo artist (I agree) and does not blend well with others (I disagree). I think this proves how well she can blend in, both vocally and visually, and yet have her contribution be distinct. And, I loved this James Taylor song long before I recognized that it was Joni singing back-up. And, I loved this James > Taylor song long before I recognized that it was > Joni singing back-up. A big "me too" from me on this as well. Only One has been my favourite JT song for years, and (like Jerry) for most of that time I had no idea Joni was singing back-up! This clip is definitely one I'll be watching over and over again! Another thing I admire about Joni is how she stays such good friends with the men in her life. I read an article about Carly Simon recently (in a Reader's Digest of all things) and she said she and James have hardly seen each other since their break-up (with the exception of their daughter's wedding), let alone spoken to each other. And yet Joni's singing with James here, and he was obviously only too happy to be a part of the TNT Tribute. Ditto for Graham Nash and David Crosby, and Larry Klein. Aside from the Joni content, it's a good piece; as an ex-Jersey girl, I know from sprawl first-hand, and it's heartbreaking. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Deb Messling -^..^- messling@enter.net - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Aug 2004 12:28:56 +1200 From: hell@ihug.co.nz Subject: Re: Joni on JT Video Jamie wrote: > Not sure if anyone has seen this before but if you > click on http://www.james-taylor.com/gallery/ and > look for the Only One link. Has anyone ever heard this song, and is it about our Joan? It's not a song, Hell, it's the title of the bootleg which is the 1970 Paris Theatre Joni-JT show that we all have. That show has been bootlegged under at least a dozen different names.
