I don't know...still thinking about it. I just listened to kd's take, listening based on your thoughts, and I agree that it's warmer. I just spun Joni's version, and damn it's awesome. If only kd had Jaco...and Guerin's drum work on the track is also not to be readily dismissed, a series of fills and accents, just wonderful. Then there's Joni's swooping vocal, that sound that the creator has given only to her. I'm just thankful I don't have to really choose, both tracks are A+++ for different reasons. I spoke yesterday to the crazy Cuban and Jimmy for a few minutes but then the cell vanished. They are all right except for the fact that the Cuban was trying to kill Jimmy, but I will let them explain when their power comes back on. I have not yet tried to call them today, but will a little later. Looks like they have dodged a bullet, but the nearby Sannibel and Captiva Islands and points a little north from there look like hell. I'm glad we don't have to choose either. I'm also glad that kd doesn't have Jaco. For me, Jaco and Joni are like two aliens who never sounded better than when they were together, at least that's the way I hear it now. I don't think I'd want Jaco on this song without Joni's guitar. His bass would mean a different mix, perhaps one that isn't as much of a singer's mix as kd's is now. Just thinking out loud...still taking it in... I don't see flames, I see this beautiful pure golden aura radiating around her. I adore it. I'm sure it's even more fabulous up close. I found the coffee table book of the Mendel art exhibit lackluster compared to her originals in the gallery so I do think Joni's art needs to be SEEN to really be appreciated. The Avalanche.....oh my god, what a painting! I stared at it for hours over 3 consecutive days, totally lost in the snowflakes. I'm blown away by her artistry, an outstanding musician, songwriter, painter. ONE woman with all these talents. AMAZING. I think offering up flowers while surrounded by flames says something about the artist, something worth knowing. The symbolism may be too obvious or easy for some, but this is a mass market release after all. The only think disturbing in the paining to me is the poorly done left hand, the fingers aren't painted well. But perhaps it's not supposed to be realistic. I like it overall. Bryan PS. Caught the Janis Ian show in Seattle Thursday night. Fabulous.
