Tea Leaf prophesy, the cover by Holly Near and Cris Williamson is F A N T A S T I C! I first heard it on Bob's cover (what number was it Bob?). If you have not heard it, you absolutely must. Then I went to the Cris Williamson concert in Rochester (excellent show) and after the show I told Cris Williamson (who was very approachable and signed cd's for people) how much I loved what she and Holly Near had done with the song. There is a fairly new cd by Holly Near and Cris Williamson with the song on it. They also sing on this: "I have dreamed on this mountain since first I was my mother's daughter and you can't just take myt dreams away not with me watching you may drive a big machine but I was born a great big woman and you can't just take my dreams away. " (I am sure some of you know this one.) Anyway, together Holly Near and Cris Williamson make a masterpiece out of this genius of Joni's work. . . . great anti war song. just terrific. . you've got to hear them singing it. This brings up something I've been curious about for a long time. Who makes the decision to do it when Rhino does a compilation like this? Does Joni have any input about what goes on it? Isn't all of this material still out there on cds that are still being produced and marketed by Reprise, Asylum and Geffen? Do each or any of these labels have any input? What are the legalities and compensations involved? Another good example is Billie Holiday's catalogue. Columbia used to own her early stuff, MCA had the Decca recordings, there was another label putting out the Commodore stuff and finally Verve has the Mercury, Clef and Verve sides. But you see cheap compilations on fly by night labels all the time that draw from most of these with the possible exception of Verve. How does all of that work? How did 'The Beginning of Survival' get done? That contains stuff from both the Geffen and Reprise recordings, does it not? Mark E. That's just the point with these viruses: the message *really* came from a third person: not you, not the purported sender of the mail, but someone else with both addresses in their address book. Thus, e-mailing the "sender", I'm afraid, does nothing but confuse and panic them, and thus, you get bounce messages from e-mails you personally never sent. It's all designed to make the recipient trust the message because it often /appears/ to have come from someone they know. You can only tell for definite by looking at the e-mail headers which is something that, in general, only people who know about the guts of internet e-mail technology can make head or tail of.
