July 7, 1969 THAT's the original event. this program was VideoTaped and later broadcast by NET-TV, as "The SOUNDS OF SUMMER" on August 3, 1969. here's the text of a half-page Promo-Ad from the Aug. 2-8, 1969 issue of TV Guide. SOUNDS OF SUMMER The Mississippi River Festival Arlo Guthrie and Joni Mitchell perform at the Mississippi River Festival, which was launched this year at Southern Illinos University at Edwardsville. Arlo is the son of the late Woody Guthrie, one of America's great folk artists. Singing professionally since 1966, Arlo distinguished himselkf with the biting satire "Alice's Restaurant," which he wrote. The 22-year-old accompanies himself on six or 12-string guitar, or piano. At the festival, he is backed by John Pilla on guitar, Bob Arkin on bass and drummer Paul Motiam. Guthrie's numbers include "The Motorcycle," Wheel Of Fortune" and "Amazing Grace." Joni Mitchell, like Guthrie, writes most of her songs. A Canadian with a natural, flower-fresh style, she wrote and sang the hit "Both Sides Now," which she does tonight. Joni, 25 years old, accomoanies herself on guitar or piano. Other songs performed by Joni at the festival include "Chelsea Morning, "Marcie" and "He Played Real Good For Free." In addition to their concert, which was taped July 7, Arlo and Joni are interviewed by Larry Gilbert. Host: Steve Allen. (2 hrs.) ---------- on a seperate page there was another smaller Ad for the program. At the age of 3, Arlo played harmonica for Leadbelly. 19 years later, Arlo Guthrie plays for you. Joni Mitchell does her thing which is sing. Steve Allen hosts another SOUNDS OF SUMMER show. All you have to do is turn us on. Mississippi River Festival Tonight: 8-10, Ch. 3, 13 ---------- there's a rather nice photograph of Joni & Arlo in the 1970 SIUE Yearbook. this photo, as well as the TV Guide Ad, will eventually be included as one of many 'Links' available via JONI MITCHELL ~ A CHRONOLOGY OF APPEARANCES. another photo, taken from the back of the venue is located at the following URL: http://www.siue.edu/~skerber/MRFphotog13.html "A guitarist performs before the audience and a television camera." the SOUNDS OF SUMMER captures Joni at a very special and particular moment in her career. she'd only recently left the 'Folk Club' circuit and moved onto the Concert Stage. she was sure of herself, confident, and totally enjoying each and every moment. MY GOD! you shoulda seen her then ... The only recordings that are currently available are of streams from the Internet which, as you know, can be somewhat tinny. A good FM (maybe even pre-FM) recording will be made available and distributed soon on the JMDL. In the meantime, you have a couple of options: 1) Listen to the audio stream via RealAudio *right now* directly from the JMDL website. Check the main page for the link. This version has the four songs edited out (they are the album versions anyway :-). 2) Join us at the file-sharing hub for immediate MP3 copies of both the edited and unedited versions of the interview. Check http://jmdl.com/p2pinfo.txt for more information on that. Enjoy! Obvious, I guess, but no small point if you are going to compare the reactions of the two groups. 2) most of the criticism of TBOS here on the jmdl were not reviews of the album or the material on it, they were laments about yet another reissue (and IMO a further dilution of one of the strongest catalogs in popular music). 3) If you are enjoying TBOS, more power to you! I hope it does well. For me, I'll wait 'til it ends up in the cutout bin. RR ps The new Billboard weekly Top 200 albums chart came out today. I must say that the artwork is wonderful - beautiful. I love those pictures of nature and knowing that they are of the forest around Joni's home in BC, well, even better.... Now in Slouching Towards Bethlehem in previous interviews she mentioned sampling her cat and then transposing it down a few octaves and it sounded like a millions sadnesses (I'm paraphrasing here, so bear with me) and she used it on the track.... So I've heard it again and again but I can find nothing that sounds remotely like a cat, transposed or otherwise. All I can hear are the street sounds, the sirens - atmosphere. In TBOS she finally credits EL Cafe as 'The Voice of Doom' but for the life of me I can't hear it... Maybe I need to play it really loud. The only thing I can possibly think it is is the violin chords that play every so often but they just sound lie synthesised strings... Can anyone enlighten me on this one? Hi Ya'll, I just got done listening to Joni's Aug. 3rd radio interview and feel like I do know her through the members of this list. Funny... do we become like her through listening to her for decades, or are we like her first and drawn to her second? I guess both could be. Anyway, I heard the voice of this list in her voice, the love of this list, the concerns of this list. Very cool and very mystical. I've been reading a book that has a chapter in it called "A Universal Seraphic Order," and I see it here on this list and in an even more awesome way now in Joni after hearing her interview. I have so much hope for humanity because of the mystical union we have on this list... and with Joni which is so much clearer to me through hearing her interview. She mentioned innocence, and I couldn't help but think of William Blake and how he spoke of people going from innocence to experience to higher innocence over a life time. Higher innocence seems to be Joni's. I am in awe and so grateful for her! AND, I am grateful for this list and for all of the ongoing sharing. With love, Laura PS. While I will be sad if Joni never records again, I can honestly say that if that's the case, she went out beautifully. The arrangements on these versions of her songs reminds me of a gorgeous movie score or soundtrack, and it's almost like she's telling her life through this set of music (I think that was the idea, anyway). Two thumbs up. 2) Also, I read an article in Mojo once that "while Joni never made a "bad" album, "Dog Eat Dog" should be approached with caution." I just got that album over the weekend, and I must say, it's a beautiful thing. Obviously some of the sounds are very dated (after all, it was the mid eighties). But I think some of the melodies on that album are her best. Some of the standout tracks to me are Good Friends, Fiction, and Ethiopia. I know there were more songs that I enjoyed (the whole album is really good), but those come to mind. If I can sneak one more thing in, I'd like to know if anyone on the list knows if Joni will ever play live again. I don't mean with a full band or tour or anything like that, but even a one-off solo set like the Gene Autry Museum show she did in 1995. That would be incredible to see. All I'd like to know is: 1) In the "Travelogue" booklet, there is a painting of GWB with an old woman behind him and it looks like he's in hell or surrounded by flames. Is this what she was implying? Can anyone enlighten me? 2) Judging from some of her lyrics, I presume Ms. Mitchell is of the democratic persuasion. Has she ever been quoted on politics or spoken out in public for or against certain issues like the war in Iraq, Bush, etc.?
