The true inspiration for the song was probably from the longing to be with her baby daughter, Kelly. (pretty baby, won't you wake up) Remember, it was a secret at the time? A while ago, I posted some clues that Joni left for us at a show she did in the late 60's, and has since been bootlegged. I'll post it again here. Note the reference to the unwed mothers. Joni's story to her audience may not be completely true, but it definitely reflects where Joni's mind was at during this time period: [After playing "Come to the Sunshine"] "Well, thats one morning, sunshine, love, and rainbow song. And I have another. And it was written much later, and in a different place. You see, a long time ago I purchased some stained glass windows that were about to be demolished because they were wrecking the house for unwed mothers that they were in. The unwed mothers were without.ofcourse.. And I rescued them for five dollars each. And took them back to a very peaceful place and set them up in my windows And every morning when the sun came up the rainbows came in Then one day I moved to New York City, which is a very different place, very different circumstances for writing under, Because its noisy all the time So I put my stained glass windows up And I covered out all of the sky which was about that much in one corner, above the church, A Postage stamp piece of sky And I wrote a very different morning, rainbow, sunshine, and love song noisy as New York City" Mia _________________________________________________________________ FREE pop-up blocking with the new MSN Toolbar get it now! http://toolbar.msn.click-url.com/go/onm00200415ave/direct/01/ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Jul 2004 09:36:17 -0700 From: "Kate Bennett" Subject: Re: Chelsea Morning Book?!?!?!? Its like that JT line "and you can stay as long as you like" in "Close Your Eyes". Given good energy, I bet Joni would be a blast to hang with.
